Christopher Hitchens debates Jordan Peterson on religion, morality, and culture. Will Christopher Hitchens hitchslap Jordan Peterson and demonstrate that religion poisons everything, or will Dr. Peterson show how religion is the foundation of morality, art, and culture and without it society would be lost?

Feeling safe in my home, in my atheism, free to make informed, mutually enthusiastic consensual love - it's a mouthful and we haven't even begun with the foreplay yet :p - to whomever I like and then hearing about little girls being sold as sexslaves makes me very aware that my freedom isn't enough, it's only the effect of the beginning of the great emancipation that enlightenment has started.

I can only guess what you’re referring to, but if do so correctly, that interview was hardly a benchmark for anything, except in a very backwards way; that was simply the single poorest performance delivered by a high profile interviewer I‘ve ever seen. Shooting her out of the water - and he certainly did, no question there - in that interview wasn‘t in any way evidence in favor of JP’s intellect. She basically put on a bomb belt and handed him the trigger. It was the bare minimum, at least for a trained debater and especially a psychology professor.

The deliberate projection of Peterson's worlds as counter to Hitchens, when Peterson was actually dealing with a very different argument, is misleading and disingenuous. In conversations where the actual *question* can be heard, he responds very carefully to the *question* and explores the implications of the answer. Hitchens exposed why the foundations of the question were fraudulent. And the lobsters were merely an illustration of that. And, as far as I know, it’s true (not the particular lobster example, the general gist of what the lobster was an example of), there are obvious connections between many social and psychological phenomenon that find their origin, or likely find their origin, in the selective pressures that our ancestors were subject too.

But the point as he sees it is that the stories are the evidence, because they have power as expressions of human experience and dilemmas and because he's only talking in that framework; i.e. only about stories. Stories are evidence for him of the power of stories, because he's only talking about stories, and their power. Only. Not literal truths. He doesn't actually believe in the literal, physical truth of the religious stories any more than Christopher Hitchens did. The reason he said he was 'agnostic' about the physical resurrection of Jesus was because he feels it's dangerous, or at least not his place, to undermine the literal belief of others, who maintain a stability with that belief. But that doesn't mean he actually 'believes' in that literal sense of concrete historical event. He's said it again and again. He clearly doesn't, thus is not interested in, and doesn't even see as in any way valid, any attempts to find 'evidence' for literalist religious belief. He doesn't have it himself, he doesn't defend it, it's not his point of view or the point of what he's saying at all. He believes humans have a deep historical 'substrate' of narratives and symbols that buttress their cognitive and emotional orientation in the world and that help them live together both rationally and morally. He would agree with Hitchens on many of the examples given of the evils of literalist religion. This whole debate is false not only because the participants were not answering each other's points at all in reality, but because they weren't even discussing the same subject and didn't actually come anywhere close to such disagreement as this video attempts to create an illusion of. Hitchens is attacking literalist religion, which Peterson is also no advocate of. The words he says are no attempt to defend it. He's talking about stories. Only stories. But that they exist for a deep reason.

One great addition to this brilliant collection of Hitch quotes, exactly because it's so relevant in this video, would be the one where he counters the claim that without a god we wouldn't be moral by saying that the exact opposite is true. Having divine permission for your actions, having your imaginary deity on your side, is what lets people do exactly anything they like to people they don't like. Hitchens has said so in many occasions, and one such example is in a debate with Alister McGrath (for example in ?v=GQcGXBo8HP8).

The fact that it's possible to use clips from a dead man to make a coherent debate with a religious apologist is a damning condemnation of how predictable the religious side is.

Have you read the book? Because it's pretty damn accurate. Perhaps so accurate that it makes up for the error of "If there is no God, everything is permissible" - a sentence the exact negation of which is the truth.

I love that you don't even have to take Peterson out of context or twist his clips. You gave pretty much the best versions of his arguments! Well done.

LOL @ 3:48 when Petersen makes a ridiculous claim and Hitchens shifts to look at him. Love it.

I met Mr hitchens in London circa '96...he was drinking Johnny walkers red label...I was drinking a 12 year old Cragganmore.....we passed a few words about each others choice.....I would like to think he knew I had the upper hand, as he did when the conversation turned towards religion. He changed my thoughts on god, yet failed regarding my choice in whisky.....both results are the perfect conclusion.

Peterson is always on about 'Crime and Punishment' for it's moral absolutism. I would send him to 'Grapes of Wrath,' 'One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest,' and 'Slingblade' for a more nuanced view. Who didn't let out a little mental cheer when Doyle Hargreave's skull got split?
