Great little piece. Al was a real-deal character. Had the great fortune to see Al and the reunited Playboys (including Dacus, Johnson, Rausch, Allsup, McAuliffe) play with Floyd and Asleep at the Wheel and hang with them in Nashville, '76, I think. Also BW Day in Turkey, 1976. Suggest viewers seek out Al's book, "My Life with Bob Wills."

It's a great book! I love his description of the mob scene at his very first Playboys gig, at Glenoak dance hall.

Yep- that style of using lots of octaves in the right hand was developed by Earl Fatha Hines so he could be heard better over those horns. Just as effective when combatting noisy guitarists! Speaking of "relating to the audience, etc." check out some of those old Fats Waller videos- he's doing these amazing Tatumesque things while mugging and yelling for the camera. Floyd, you've got a great left hand for that style. I've got small hands, can barely reach a tenth unless I "rock it" from the root to the tenth. Or I'll sometimes walk the bass while not always hitting the root. Great video.

Waller’s mugging might have lost him, at least in his days, some of the respect his formidable tech II we should won him. But I think jazz fans for a long time now realize what a great stride and swing player he was.
