This is one of my favourite films of all time. I watched it about two years ago and have been randomly thinking about it recently, so I finally searched KZbin to find it again today and rewatching it really reignited something within me. With going through a difficult time in my life right now and finding joy in language learning, your story really speaks to me Rob. Thank you for what you share with the world.

Thanks so much for this beautiful comment Lauryn ♥️ Honestly I'm so pleased that this resonated so deeply with you. How are things going in your life now? Has your difficult situation improved? I'm happy that you have found language learning to be a sort of "companion" through hard times, just like I have, and reading comments like this inspires me to continue sharing my story 😊

I understand this so deeply that it almost made me cry. I was born in the US but never quite felt like I fit in anywhere. When my kids got old enough, I finally was able to go to college at 40 years old and majored in Multi-Ethnic Studies. I planned to travel th3 world. When I was able to retire (at only 50) I went to Japan. I was never able to learn enough of the language but I did manage to get by. I lived in Kyoto for three months and then got an apartment in Osaka. Fortunately, I had been able to set up some pen pals before I went and one of them became a very good friend. But she had a family and I didn’t want to get in the way, so I spent most of my time alone in my apartment trying to learn Japanese and working on Spanish, especially after the weather got too cold to enjoy wandering around outside. I decided that I needed to get a job teaching English so I could make a place for myself in the country. But after six months and before I could get a job, my mother became ill and I had to return to the US. A year later, I moved to Mexico. I do speak Spanish pretty well, and even became a citizen a year and a half ago. I owned my home a bit south of Guadalajara for 16 years, but it seemed like my town was coming too “gringo”. So I sold it and moved to a very Mexican area of Puerto Vallarta in February to start over again. Then COVID hit. Now I’ve lived here for eight months and have been hiding out in my apartment, still trying to improve my Spanish, but also studying French and Italian. I know three neighbors, all much younger than me. Two are guys who need English for their work and are happy to have someone to practice with, the third is a very nice young woman who speaks faster than anyone I’ve ever heard in my life. I know things will improve when it is safe to socialize again, but in the meantime, it’s pretty lonely when you don’t quite fit in.

This is brilliant. People I know always wonder why I study languages, even though I have no real natural talent for it, and I've never been able to give a good answer. I always explain that I love hearing people's stories, I love language study in general, I love getting to know new people and experiencing new cultures. But I've never been able to put it as succinctly or as beautifully as you have. This is incredibly inspiring, and incredibly touching. Thank you so much for uploading this.

What a video Rob.. I had some shivers watching this. And you are so right. I completely understand what you mean with languages. I'm passionnated about learning them, since more than one year. I'm from Belgium, my mother tongue is french and today I had an absolutely amazing experience. I worked as a student for the first time today in a museum. We have to speak quite well English and Dutch, and personaly I speak a very basic Polish. I saw thousand of visitors today but I'll remember one. To enter the museum he had to give me his ID, and when I saw he was Polish, I just asked him " hey , you're polish ! How are your vacations in Belgium, enjoy your visit ", all in Polish. And that man smiled at me like I was telling him I loved him. He was so surprised finding a guy who speaks just few words of polish in a country he must feel himself as a complete foreigner. He was a bit confused at thanked me, keeping smiling at me going away. I don't write it to say I speak polish, I don't even know 100 words, anyone could learn what I know in one day. But that's why we learn languages, to connect people, to share things with them more easily. The feeling of make a man smile was just incredible. It made me day, I have gotten up just for that. And I don't speak it perfectly. And I think that's why we live on this Earth, to connect people, to make them smile, to make them feel like the world is their home. I found your story really interesting and I thinkwe all need people to be happy, to feel alive. Let's grow up together, let's discover all the wonderfull things in this world together, let's forget the badder. When we visit a country, Let's discover the people instead of the statues and so one, because the humanity is the most beautifull thing in this world , that's for sure. Go on your videos Rob, I wish you all the happiness every single day, I wish you will find a home wherever you go, and keep chasing your dreams. Too much people have regrets for not had chased their dreams. We live to dream, we live to push ourselves to the sky. Looking forward to see another one, Simon

After watching your recent update video on life, channel and language learning, I watched your original video “Home”. This was my first time watching this video and on first impression, this video is amazing! The film making is incredible! It’s a honest depiction of what home is to you really and it’s very relatable. Your perspective on what your idea of home is really resonated with me and it’s also one of the main reasons I’m fascinated with language learning. Even the raw footage in the middle of the video where your speaking in multiple languages is captivating and very inspirational. This video is a wonderful piece!! Thanks for sharing!! 😊

Hey Joshua!! So sorry for the incredibly slow reply man! I normally always do my absolute best to reply to every single comment and often in long form to make sure I always give the most helpful and thoughtful responses possible, but I was pouring so much of myself into my projects while navigating some ups and downs and got quite behind for some time, and then when I switched my KZbin channel over to a "brand account" I lost ALL OF MY COMMENTS 😱So all of a sudden every response I ever wrote was gone -- and to be honest, the exchanges I've had in the comments over the years has probably been the most rewarding part of all of this. One of the tough things about that is that I lost a record of any comments I hadn't responded to in the past. However I always remembered your name and kept it in the back of my mind that I need to come back and respond to these, no matter what. I'm finally BACK ON TOP of my channel and all of my big projects that are almost done, and am glad to finally get back to you and anyone else that I missed before 😊

Aug. 2021, this video was in my « à regarder plus tard » list, forgotten whereas I have been following you for more than a year. It was fantastic video. Such deepth and maturity at 22 years old live me without words. I don’t know if you are going to read this comment but I understand better now why and how Jounaly came about and the sens of achievement you must have felt despite the grueling number of hours you spent building it. I wonder if you could use this video to promote it further. Anyways go Robin! Well done! pale are my words of encouragement compared with what you have achieved!

You are such an inspiration! I felt so touched by the idea of home that you proposed. I am an American born and raised in Japan- so although I felt like I was from here, having people telling me that I am not was a battle in of its own growing up. But just like you said, the people that you surround yourself with becomes that home. I am now studying French and feel even more empowered after watching your video! THANK YOU!! 本当にありがとう。

Hi there Robin! Thanks for your reply! Growing up was a little bit of a different situation for me. In the house we spoke only English, and that was my main language because I was homeschooled, but with the neighborhood kids I would speak Japanese. I felt such a strange gap of feeling Japanese, but not speaking the language as well as English, I studied the hell out of it and surrounded myself with friends and work. The interesting thing that I got out of it, and am still studying and trying to observe is how much of a role culture and environment play in the way people think and make decisions. The idea of "Home" has been coming up recently in conversations as well, and your video came around and such a good time it has me thinking :)

Incredible video! I think your definition of 'home' really hits close to my heart. I've lived in different places, and the one thing that makes me out of touch from people, is definitely the language. People do appreciate it when you take the time to learn the language. I've picked up bits and pieces, but definitely a long way to go. Your video is so inspiring!

I'm actually quite surprised this doesn't have more views. What an amazing story! I'm sure this will definitely get somewhere quickly! Great job! Very inspiring! Keep up that motivation! Good luck on your next endeavor as well! :D When I was taking Spanish in college, I remember my instructor saying that learning new languages is more than learning a new way to communicate. It is learning a new way to view the world. It allows you to view things in a way you never would have been able to view them otherwise. I hope one day I'm able to study languages as you have. Thank you for creating and sharing this.

I'm learning japanese too and plan to be there in 3 years so to see what you've done with the language in the same amount of time and having such great experiences as a result really just fuels me to work hard at it. I'm coming back to this video every few years, and I'm sure I watched it at least 10 times. I like your definition of "home". I still don't have any place which I could call home even I'm 45, jumping every few years from country to country doesn't help, but maybe my definition is wrong, and as you said, it isn't a physical place

Hi, I'm Japanese uni student. I've also studied abroad and after coming back I can't love Japan cuz of its "internal(内向き)" mind and attitude. But this video shows me positive part of Japan. Thank you very much.

Thank you for coming back and watching this video! I know it is a little bit long 🙈 This was a very special project for me. At that time, I hoped that all my videos would be in this short documentary style with so much thought, time, energy, and passion into every little detail. At that time, I hoped to be a short documentary film maker. The way that life played out, I wasn't able to make any more videos quite like this one, but I am so so so happy and excited that now I am finally entering a new chapter of my life where I can begin to dream about making short documentary films again! I hope I can make some nice ones that you will enjoy ✨💫

You have been through more in 22 years, than most have in decades. Most admirable. I am sure that you will be able to return to Japan. May I suggest sending this video to all the major Japanese TV stations as an audition tape. You may get a paying, visa providing, job, doing travel vids for one of them and be back to Japan with support this time by a company. Just a suggestion.

I hope all is well with you in these eventful times. I recently found an international community started by a pair of KZbinrs, one Canadian and one Swede. I started learning Swedish to reach out from isolation. In the year that I will be turning 40, I'm starting to think this is a turning point for my life. At this point, I am seriously thinking of moving back to Banff Alberta once my apprenticeship is over, since it'll be more likely that I will meet people who speak different languages there. I don't know if anyone will read this, if you do, I wish you well, and I hope 2021 is as good as 2020 was awful.

It was truly a love letter for Japan and your dear people there! Thank you for your deep video! 😥🥲 You are a really good language learner if you got your Norvegian to that level in only four weeks with pronounciation and all! I have been in Norway a few times, onxe I worked there for eight months but I did never think about pronounciating words with the same "melody" as those other people - I spoke it as a Finnish person speaks. I am really glad that nowadays you make HOMY (is that a correct word) videos vith a large, most beautiful coffee cup at your table. I suppose that you have found a real home at that way, too.

Hello Robin, I just got finished watching your video I was crying all the way through. I can definitely understand where you’re coming from. I found your story to be so beautiful and inspiring. It makes me want to continue with my own language learning journey. It is true that you’re not gonna know every word and every language and not every language that you learn is going to be at an events level or even upper intermediate level. However, it’s about the journey and it’s about incorporating Language into your life and into your soul in order to bridge the gap between communication barriers in regards to speaking with people who don’t speak your mom mother tongue. Keep making videos my friend. I really enjoyed our conversation that we had it right before Christmas it was great inspiring and a lot of people enjoyed the interview that I did with you. You are an inspiration to language learners, lovers and polyglots from around the world. Love you honey. Keep up the good work.

Robin, you did it again! You touched my heart when we met in person in Novi Sad (Oct. 9-12, 2014) for the 2nd Polyglot Conference and you touched my heart again with this very personal, beautiful and inspiring work of art. Keep up the good works!

Hey Rob! Que impressionante! Such an amazing video! We are one in the same when it comes to languages but I wish I had the drive you do when it comes to learning so many! I have become incredibly complacent when it comes to "branching out" to other languages. Portuguese is my next language I promise! Well done. ALSO, to answer your previous question I would say you have a very neutral accent which definitely isn't a bad thing. You actually don't sound like an english speaker speaking spanish (if that makes sense). I know us perfectionists can get caught up on regional dialects but if I were you I'd hold onto the accent that you feel most speaks to you! I lived in spain and have a neutral (spain) accent but it's definitely been changing the longer I've remained in the US (especially seeing how I live in california)! Does that make sense? lol. Accents and pronunciation are two things I'd like to talk about in my next video so stay tuned! Best, Tim

I clicked on the link you sent me and thought. Here we go again.... another lame "how to learn hiragana" or "this is Japan" type of video... I saw the 18:19 length of your video and sighed again. "Oh, shit, I'm not watching..." But clicked play anyway... in all honesty, you didn't grab me in the first 15 seconds like the KZbin pros tell you you should, but by 90 seconds I was pretty damned hooked! And at the same time I feel like I've wasted my life!

Beautiful. I feel the same way about music, how G-d can use the gift of music for me to be able to be "at home" with people from all places and all walks of life. I speak Hebrew and some Spanish. I am inspired to learn more. Thank you for inspiring us all. You said in this video that you have cancer? ...or maybe I heard wrong...if it's true, how are you feeling now? I hope for only the best for you. You are a blessing to the world and I hope we only hear more and more of you.

Judging by this documentary you've had a pretty busy life so far. Also seems like you have achieved quite a lot. You know a lot of languages. You've visited countries. You've met people. That's pretty awesome, really. I just .. can't help but compare myself to you .. and .. man, it feels like I've wasted most of my time by now. Kinda depressing. God daaamn depressing:| All the best though! P.S. I'm here because of Your 'Gespräch' with Cari from Easy German. Wanted to write something about language learning with the method mentioned in the video, then decided to check your channel before that, then looked for the oldest video I could find and that's how I got here. P.S. 2 I don't even know why I'm writing this. You probably shouldn't care anyways.

Thank you for opening up so much. I'm sure in the 9 years since you've grown so much and have really developed in all areas of life. If you ask me, there is a hole in our hearts that can only be filled with God. If you have God, everywhere is home. To have a friendship with your creator is that missing puzzle piece people spend their entire lives looking for without realizing what it is. They try to find it in career, money, women, fame. They have it all, but they still don't feel 100% complete. But then there's people who have miserable and have nothing, but they are content because they have God secured in their hearts. I invite you to fall in love with God. That love is worth more than our eyes and hands.

"The content owner has not made this video available on mobile".... WHY?... I watch almost all of my KZbin on my tablet so I can get work/studies done on my desktop. Please reconsider. EDIT: Apparently this is due to the presence of copyrighted music that you don't have rights to in the video (according to a google search).. regardless, very inconvenient.... I will subscribe/watch but ... might be something you want to look at.
