The Mandela Effect is a term for where a group of people all mis-remember the same detail, event or physicality. It is named after the instance in which a large group of people all shared the same memory that Nelson Mandela died prior to his actual 2013 death, usually some time in the 1980’s. The effect exploded in popularity on the internet when a peculiar example popped up where a majority of people seemed to have recalled the Berenstain Bears books as being spelled as “Berenstein” or some other variation, differing from the actual spelling as presented by evidence.
The effect is somewhat different from a false memory as it effects large groups of people, seemingly without many connections and without the same emotional factors present. It also seems stronger and harder to escape the feeling that it’s simply a mis-remembering of a detail, which is why people are so adamant with claims of their memories. As such, it’s often been hinted at that the Mandela Effect is closely related to cognitive dissonance. Cognitive dissonance can be mental stress or discomfort experienced by an individual who holds beliefs, ideas, or values and is confronted by new information that conflicts with existing beliefs, ideas, or values. Please note the use of “can be” as there is many purists that don’t accept the broader definition and scope of cognitive dissonance applying to memory versus reality.
Many Mandela Effects are usually trivial details about an oddly specific set of categories. These include things such as the how and when of celebrity deaths, misspellings (usually replaced or removed letters), placement of geographical locations, quotations within media, or alternate imagery.
It is also related to misconceptions in general, although, again is differentiated due to the obscure nature and odd feelings resulting from learning the reality. The solutions, explanations and reasons for the misconceptions are also cryptic and often misrepresented or unknown altogether.

It was a Tiger Electronics hand held. I remember this partially because I always watch the movie around Christmas time but I always remembered that it played a little electronic jingle after she said “A partridge in a pair tree.” since I was a child. Very distinct sounds. Maybe the confusion some of you are experiencing is from the ‘Talk Boy’ in HA2?

Yes there was a game boy in home alone, not only did Kevin's brother played in the van, but Kevin also played with one . After home alone was released, Macaulay Culkin was on the Arsenio Hall show and they were talking about the game boy he played in the movie . At the end of the interview, Arsenio gave him a Gameboy as a gift. They opened it and played with it . Now if you go back and watch it "its on youtube" Arsenio hall gave him a turbo graphics 16 machine .

To be honest... and I say this as someone who have watched this film since at least 1991 and been a fan ever since... there never was a Game Boy in the movie. It was always a generic LCD game with fitting piezo-speaker beeping sounds in the movie soundtrack. The kind of LCD game sounds that were rather typical. I never saw an actual Game Boy in the movie a single time. Don't confuse this with the infamous "Home Alone 3" where the boy had a yellow Game Gear. THAT was a film where there actually was an actual licensed handheld in the film. Sorry, no Mandela Effect here.

Product placement in movie isn't always what it seems. Sometimes it's added in post production after the scene was shot. Therefor, that CGI image is dropped after a certain time period or on a later released DVD version, you no longer see it. There are examples of this everywhere. Another example is "The Island" filmed in early 2000s. In a futuristic shot, there is a phone booth that advertises "MSN search" in the original theatric and DVD version. But when the movie was televised several years later, that advertisement is gone.

Wonder what did the script and stage directions say (maybe: "plays GameBoy in the van). With as many comments that are on here, somebody has to know how to reach this guy and the others in the scene. I seriously doubt the script was that detailed as to even mention the kid playing a game in the van. Unless it has some profound impact on the plot those kind of things are usually passed on to the pre production team to flesh out.

What it is showing is that we now and only for the last 100 years or so have recordings of events, films and personal stuff plus photos, where's before that we couldn't do this. So what it's doing is showing us that making Recodings of our past and for the first time we can really look back and see that changes are happening which has been the case all along now that we are now picking up on it, its telling us something is manipulating time all the time.

Buzz was his brother which is not the kid you shown, that was Jeff which i think is a cousin. Anyway i'm pretty sure the one kid is on a GameBoy outside of the van when his sister is counting heads. Then again it could be the first one when a kid is playing on a GameBoy and we're confusing it with the second one. But i'm pretty sure it's in the second one, i think it's outside of the van though not in it for the part of the movie.

During the 80s, 90s they had little handheld battery powered gaming devices that had 1 game on it. I had a sonic one and a car racing one as a kid. Doesn’t have to be a game boy it could literally be one of the 100 & 1000s gaming devices made during the time

Isn't that one of those old digital games that only had a few animations for one specific game like baseball and stuff? I remember I had a Batman one. They were poor kid Gameboys :)

Obviously it’s just a prop that’s supposed to represent a game boy or whatever handheld gaming system. It is similar to a game boy which it probably was supposed to look like and when you watched it you just presumed it was but then you later realize it actually wasn’t.

I think I may have an answer. Back then, in the US, you either had a gameboy, a Sega Game Gear, OR one of those cheap hand held helds with fixed backgrounds and limited movement. For example, games like poker, solitaire, slots, etc. However, one Christmas when I was a boy I got one.... It was home alone 2 themed... It wasn't as tall as what he was playing with... Hes probably holding a prop. As far as the Mandela effect, you're not (home) alone... lol

honestly, don't think it was ever a gameboy seeing as this movie came out just over a year after the gameboy did accounting for casting time shooting editing and paperwork needed for product placement, I doubt nintendo would have used this mvie to promote the handheld. just saying. Maybe you just assumed it was as a child since that was the big thing.

For those who have a bit common sense left, and a scientific approach on things, hear my opinion in a small essay format. ( in terrible english ) If not, you are free to skip. Everyone watching Home Alone in that era was a young kid. I suspect everyone here commenting about it, are between 25 - 35 years old. How old were you when you have watched that movie? I was 10 / 11 / 12 years old or something. And watched it hundreds of times. So much times, and even now, I cannot know all the details anymore. Simply because my brain is having other priorities now. It doesn't need to remember everything from the movie anymore. Honestly I too thought it was a gameboy. But I can't remember seeing it specifically on the screen. I also accept the fact that I am wrong, because I was a kid back then. And kids are still learning and make mistakes, while being wrong multiple times. It's called puberty, and there are molecular things happening with your brain and body during that period. So your perspective was not right all the time. Kids believe it was a gameboy because it looked like one. Or you maybe had seen an gameboy advertisement by some cast member of Home Alone but screwed up the details. Or even weirder: You never noticed it, but you heard a friend of yours talking about it once, but forgot that moment with your friend, but kept remembering the gameboy story. Now, older and wiser we know it isn't a gameboy, yet our nostalgic kid in us contradicts us. Something we remembered falsely. And it is not so strange that you aren't the only one. Everyone was a kid, and kids talk with eachother. They motivate , help and inform eachother, even when they are wrong at times. And not everyone is so unique as we think, all kids see a different perspective than adults, who are wiser. No one excluded. It's a steep learning path. And it came to my attention that 'almost' all supposed mandela effects are from the same era. And almost all people who say they believe in them are around the same age. Funny eh? I've never seen people talking about the effect when they are 60 years of age. Or 12 year olds.. Don't you think a supposed shift in reality would affect everyone? Not just 25-35 year olds? And strange how the mandela effect becomes a thing in 2016 - 2018? Why have no one mentioned it earlier, even under another name? How come we accept that mandela is a part of reality / dimension shifting, but there is not even actually one single proof of alternate realities / dimensions in the first place?! Mandela effect is nothing more then a childs perspective of false intrepetation. Just like the world looked a lot bigger than it looks today. ( Look, another feeling that LOTS of people share in common! Strange... No, it's actually not.) Or the same about time perception: Time seems to go slower as a kid. Lots of people thought it was a gameboy because they really believed it as a kid. But suddenly you are older, but your child memories contradict you. This has nothing to do with alternate realities or dimensions, this has everything to do with the human brain. I do think this 'feeling' of awkward, false memories fits in the same category as 'Deja Vu' , which is actually a malfunction in your brain. It needs more research to fully understand, And I am actually quiet interested in the results. But I am not second guessing these results like some of you do. We are not scientists. We are just looking for answers, but we are naturally not patience by default, so we already make up a fictional story to fill that empty gap. And like every other 'conspirancy' theory, it gets forgotten or solved because the real truth and facts are overwhelming. This is just a phase... There is absolutely no evidence to be found about the 'dimension' theory. I admit, this effect is weird, but nothing links to the fairytale story about alternate realities and such. ( we all love to hear from time to time, that's why it is so popular ) I love how people try to make science fiction around a subject that doesn't have much information, because of the lack of science. It even affects healthy thinking people... Look everyone is entitled to think what they want. I just wish people really tried to solve it, without bringing the extra ordinary all the time. Why not study to become a scientist / psychologist, and try to find the answers? And this entire theory / story comes from ONE source. And that person knows he/she is bullshitting, and laughing his/hers ass off, about what is happening now. That leads me to a question: Why create a story based on a theory and present them as facts? Why? Can't you see how damaging that is for yourself and surroundings? ( And if on a big scale, even damaging for humanity? ) And with all that it mind, do ( and this is genuinely factual ) consider that bringing doubt is actually a form of wanted entertainment. That is why people love to see dramatised, actors pretending like they are haunting ghosts on History Channel. Gullible enough to consider it entertainment. For a while people actually believed it, untill it turned out to be another hoax. This youtube video makes use of the same format. ( Uploader could be even unaware of that fact. Yet he is probably aware of the views it will get since it is a popular subject now. There is money involved in this... ) If you are still reading, thanks for hearing me out. Keep in mind that everything I said also applies for most ( if not all ) other mandela situations... Again excuse my english grammar and sentence building. I am not a native speaker and did my best. But despite my lack of english knowledge, I love to use my brain to be realistic and see entertainment as something fun (and fun only), instead of a possible 'worst case scenario' reality.

PANTA, a long rationalization, like an oyster trying to make a glossy pearl in response to an irritant or a foreign body. You didn’t hear the term “Mandela Effect” until after Fiona Broome coined it in about 2010. The term gained more attention after Mandela’s passing in 2013, perhaps his passing striking many as odd given they remembered the reports of his death in prison years earlier, and the funeral and ceremonies and mourning broadcast on television. Cognitive dissonance would work in the reverse of how you said. people would just adjust their memory to the new reality, or if the memory persists they would just dismiss it as mistaken. It doesn’t mean what is now called Mandela Effect didn’t happen before the term was coined. Most people noticing this phenomena seem to be over 60, so they were not children when the “Home Alone” franchise began. It seems there are too many people like Dennis Fleaman here who just make these poorly done videos as clickbait without any understanding of the phenomena. Some things are properly classified as possible evidence of the kind of reality shifts that are being noticed, and the term “Mandela Effect” has been useful for that, but as will happen with such things, the cultural processes of folklore, and the more commercial popular culture, will work to change meanings. Let us try to preserve the distinct value of the term “Mandela Effect” as much as we can. It is not to be confused with false memories, the induction of which one of my professors was the world authority on. Elizabeth Loftus was often expert witness for the falsely accused, a very different issue than the Mandela Effect. It is not scientific to be incurious or to deny the reality or even possibility of a phenomenon just because we do not yet have a satisfying model for it or because we are too comfortable with an accepted view to seek beyond it. If one is truly scientific in it’s highest and best sense such phenomena, even if beginning in folklore or popular culture, should inspire or at least provoke us to further expand our understanding. To that end you might refer to the more advanced physicists, including people like Nassim Haramein, Vadim Zeland, and many others who must be necessarily controversial sometimes in their pursuit of scientific truth. You could even go back to Max Planck, the quantum physicist who said consciousness is fundamental and all else is derivative, to begin to realize the implications. When your model of reality no longer holds up in accounting for the observed phenomena, it is anti-scientific to not adjust the model or theories to at least try to account for what is experienced. There is no such thing as settled science, if it’s settled it’s not science.
