This gives me the chills still - first time after 25 years in revisiting this. Home and Away was never really the same after Shane and Michael. Pippa herself was never the same.

I was in pre-school when this first aired & now I'm in my 30s. This scene has stayed in my memory bank ever since I first seen it as a pre-schooler. I remember being angry at Sam because of this scene as my older sisters were at the time. 😅

Re-watching The Early Years, it still makes no sense that they decided to axe Michael. Especially so soon after Shane had died. It has an over-egging the pudding feel to it. It's just as well Pippa left a couple of years later because if she'd stayed on the show, she'd probably be widowed 6 or 7 times over at this stage.

I still always remember this scene. Was tragic. Can't believe it was 96 though! I remember in the ep that followed, Pippa coming out to the kitchen and the kids are fighting and she has internal dialogue "Aw no. Guys, not today of all days, please." I believe the next ep was straight to the day of the funeral. It didn't feel the same after this, the whole family dynamic felt off-kilter.

Same here... Plain unfair... They COULD have at least said he was swept away and never found, giving viewers an idea that he may still be alive out there.

Damn. I hope to find more old episodes some day and continue from where I left off (Episode 1785.) I started off really not liking Michael at all, but he developed well as a character. It's sad to see good character development literally swept away.

That's not quite true - they used another baby for those scenes and had their real life daughter on the set. I always thought it was cruel to put them through that sudden infant death storyline though. Perhaps in hindsight it was a sign that the program makers had it in for them .
