In this video I'll show you all of the available IKEA remotes, a bulb and a plug top. I'll get them setup into Home Assistant using Zigbee2MQTT and an CC2531. This removes the need to use the IKEA integration, and the TRADFRI Gateway.
This is Part 1 of 3. In the next video, I'll show you the configuration.yaml that needs to be added in and some cool things we can do in Node Red.

I had considered buying into the IKEA system for general lighting in my bedroom, but didn't because they didn't offer a remote control that would let me control multiple lights on one remote like with the existing 433MHz RF system and BroadLink RM setup I have. However, for my studio lighting, which is all controlled through Deckboard connected to Home Assistant, I was considering getting the BroadLink SP4 plug tops, but the IKEA ones look more compact than those and I could see myself doing something like this, since those IKEA plug tops cost $13 a piece here (Singapore), and the BroadLink ones are way more expensive. I could also try to see if the new Yeelight ceiling lights I had installed in the living room are compatible with Home Assistant, so I could try to hook up one of those IKEA motion sensors, and maybe a temperature sensor to control the half-broken wall fan I have in the storeroom. (8:53) This reminds me: I have a first generation Xiaomi air purifier, and it had a strange sensor on the top near the power/speed button and Wi-Fi indicator. It was only when I connected it to Home Assistant that I found it was actually a light sensor not exposed through the Mi Home app, but through Home Assistant! I could actually use it, but I haven't come up with any automations. (12:57) I believe that's because the European plug version was likely the original design, as IKEA corporate is based in Sweden which in turn uses European plugs and sockets. They would've then produced the other country plug versions later on.

Thanks for the life of me couldnt see that little reset button on the smart plug. I also got a 4 pack of the SONOFF S40 Lites at the same time and I gotta say: I much prefer the SONOFF ones. They're smaller, more likely to fit on a power strip or a cramped outlet, go into pairing mode right away so you don't even have to set it to pair, the pairing button is actually big and press-able by your finger if you need, and paired immediately. The Ikea ones, while not required, did have a firmware update available when they showed up where as the SONOFF ones were fully up-to-date though that's a small gripe. Oh and not to mention getting them in a 4 pack had them ~$9 USD a plug, vs the $15 for the ikea plug.

Thanks for the clear video. I tried doing the same as you, but then in Zigbee Home Automation (ZHA). The traffic wireless dimmer does seem to pair to the intrad CC2531, but when pressing the button doesn’t trigger any zha_events. So no succes yet. Nice... Now since I actually have a HUE hub for my HUE Lights, I actually pared my IKEA units to Hue and they show up there and from there I can see them in Home Assistant. I did buy one of the IKEA Hubs so I could update the firmware on the lights as the older firmware would not work with Hue. But once upgraded, they added with no issues to HUE. I keep the IKEA Hub around should I need to do the same again with new devices. Now with all that said, will this work with HUE items??

@@HomeSight Ahhh you may have just solved an issue I’m having. I want HA to manage ALL my devices so I added HUE integration to it and they all show up. Problem is, I cannot find a way to tell Amazon’s Alexa to NOT auto ads HUE to itself so when I add HA to Alexa, she has two (2) copies of all my Hue items!!! Then she complains that she doesn’t know which one I want to control. I end up having to go one at a time and disable each one she found. Grrrr So maybe now I can do away with it. But is is nice to have a backup access to those lights via the Hue app. Ahhh well guess I’ll complain to Hue about adding an option NOT to auto add devices.
@HomeSight
@HomeSight 3 жыл бұрын
If you’re using emulated Hue to pass HA devices to Alexa, you could exclude those devices in HA from being passed to Alexa. That way Alexa can manage directly to the hue hub, and HA can still manage them as well... (if I understood your problem correctly)

I guess you could have another HA instance running on a Pi somewhere else running zigbee2mqtt, but rather than sending the MQTT messages to the local broker, sending it to a different one? @HomeSight
@HomeSight 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Bob, I agree to a point, but zigbee devices definitely have their place… advantages of zigbee: 1- creates mesh network extending network away from receiver. 2- the 2.4GHz frequency had higher bandwidth so more data can be passed, this includes status and control messaging, i.e. a bulb may have colour temp, RGB . 3- devices typically have polling as well as notification of change of state. For something like a door or window sensor I would still stick to RF 433MHz because I just want to know when it opens/closes.
