There is a huge satisfaction in doing many of these things. And many times it’s not as complex as expected. But then again, sometimes I’ve done a repair and ended up with that extra nut laying there after it’s all finished😬😂

So far, I've binge-watched this series. I'm an OTR truck driver, and I'm parked for the day at Walcott, IA. I found this series after I washed laundry this morning. This is a great series, and a great channel. I'm subscribed now. Thanks for sharing your experience and ideas with the rest of the world. PS, I also shared this playlist to my husband. We are talking about rebuilding an existing camper, and you may be an inspiration.

That appears to be a good quality product. I once tried to install an aftermarket "direct-fit" option, and nothing aligned easily. Your daughter is quite the helper. She's growing up so fast, so be sure to keep her involved as long as she's willing. She'll remember the times spent with you like that. Thanks for the video, Joe!

Yes, I’ve had good luck with things from etrailer. I got my bulldog coupler, vent fan and several other trailer related items from there for that build. Although I will say that while the holes were all aligned on this hitch the actual receiver tube ended up about an 1/8th to 1/4” just to throw right of center of the bumper. Not a deal breaker since it won’t affect how the trailer tows and keeps it that much farther from oncoming traffic. But it did bug me a bit that I couldn’t get it to line up perfectly. And yes, I’m trying to involve my little girl in as much as she has an interest in. At this age she is so willing to help me and seems to be interested in what I’m doing.... so I’m trying to capitalize on it now.... before she uninterested and too cool to hang with dad😂

Well, mostly because it was recently painted😂. When I bought it, the place selling it ‘touched up’ thr under side with black spray paint to cover surface rust, scratches, etc. So when I decided to make a video on it I sprayed off all the dust to make it more presentable and I saw how much they sprayed and how much they missed. So then I took about half a can of back spray to cover up their misses. So pretty much it was just to make it look presentable on video. But there is almost zero chance I’ll ever do anymore under there😂

And I did some paint touch ups too😂. 100% for the video But you are right.... out here we don’t have salted roads and the low moisture really keeps any bad rust from forming. It amazes me how many of my peers (professional IT) won't even perform the most basic maintenance themselves on their vehicles. Even swapping out their Winter/Summer wheels if they have both sets. No, they'd rather load up the wheels in their vehicle, then go across town and pay somebody else to do it. Screw that, I'd rather blow a boatload of money on a garage, tools, tool boxes, a lift, air compressor, more tools, parts, and waste my spare time doing everything I can myself. It's just more fun and satisfying.

Nice presentation. While the spare tire was down, did you add oil or grease to the mechanical parts to insure future movement. It was nice seeing a rust free underside to your truck. Here in NE Ohio the DOT applies liberal amounts of rock salt and brine to our roadways in winter. Too many friends have found their spare tire rusted in place or missing when the chain rusted through while driving. It was good seeing your use of eye protection. Wishing you and your family a blessed spring season. Peace brother.

You need to recheck your torqued bolts. When you don't hold the head of the ratchet like in the intro, the torque wrench deflects sideways leading to inaccurate tightening. The extension will exaggerate the effect.

@homesteadonomics
@homesteadonomics 3 жыл бұрын
Not a bad video idea! But the quick of this is that we were looking for a truck with 4wd, low miles and was in a year range that has a history of good reliability. If you research different vehicle models, years, engine/transmission....you’ll find there are years where certain vehicles tended to have problems and years in which the engines/transmissions tended to be more reliable. For example this is a 2013, at the end of a transmission run in which these chevys/gmc models had a good track record. But I’ve heard the same models of Chevy/gmc from the 2014-2017 range had bad issues with the transmissions especially.

I currently have a 2013 GMC Sierra 2500 HD.... 100k miles on it now, solid built, no problems. The reason I chose it, it was the basic Work Truck with the more desirable 6.0 L engine.... known to be much more resilient than the 6.1 L engine and easier to work on. But mostly the success of the truck I had before lead me back to GMC.. even though I considered the Tundra. My previous 2005 GMC Sierra 1500 I used for a service business I had in Arizona with multiple different service techs drove it as well as abused it... rarely needed to fix anything... at 287,000 miles the transmission starting showing a few signs of wear... I sold it to a mechanic and he resold it after making transmission repairs. I saw it multiple times and 3 years later I have seen it still on the road in Phoenix. I am on the list for a Rivian R1T for delivery next year.

Another great video! Nice job explaining the torque wrench to viewers. E-Trailer really has some amazing customer service, information, videos and products. Got to love directions. My favorite is when companies send you outdated directions with updated hardware and missing hardware. Then you start to question did you miss something. LOL! Great helper you have! ~Mark & Teresa P.S. Please tell us you detailed the underside of your truck? It looks brand new clearly it's not Homesteadonomics Grey. So we had to ask.

Oh yes, etrailer is reaaaally good with detailed videos attached with many of their products. I think I watched their hitch install video a couple times just to make sure I knew what my game plan was...haha. Oh yes, the under side of the truck actually had black paint on it before I bought it. It was a ranchers truck that was traded into a small dealership... and I think they ‘touched up’ the under side to cover scrapes and surface rust...haha So when I was getting ready for the video I sprayed under with a hose to get most of the dust off.... to look better on video. Then I hit some of the spots they missed with about half a can of black spray that I already had😂 100% just to make it a little more presentable on camera😉

@@OutOfOfficeCamping oh believe me.... there is actually a thing in vintage car circles that an Arizona car has more value than many other states due to the lack of moisture and no salt on roads. Except for a few of our mountain towns, very light surface rust is all you’d get. That’s also the reason that the aviation boneyards are here. Check out the one next to Davis-monthan AFB in Tucson. Thousands of ‘mothballed’ fighter jets, bombers, other aircraft sitting in a dry environment. Pretty impressive to drive by

if that truck has the 8 speed transmission change the transmission fluid asap. also recommended change the torque converter because there's no good way to drain it completely

Go back to your mate and borrow the torque wrench again and retention everything again. You only gave it 1 click, I always give them at least 2 or 3 then retention after driving around a bit, as you’ve already used it, do it now.

I've never bought a truck without a hitch (guess I thought it was standard equipment) but it seems strange to have the wiring for a trailer plug but no hitch...
@homesteadonomics
@homesteadonomics 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah I did too... especially since it’s a 2500 and basically more purpose built for that as well. But a friend of mine told me that on those HD models they don’t always add the hitch due to the fact that it is often dependent on what the future owner might pull. The manufacturer would likely install a generic medium duty hitch and the buyer might prefer a 5th wheel style trailer or maybe want a bigger duty hitch. Not sure but that kinda made sense to me. As for the wiring... they had a harness going to the bumper but it was capped off. So I just added a plug. I guess that is also a common thing for these models. Pre-wired but not plug due to the many people wanting or preferring a different style plug. Who knows though🤷‍♂️😀

They are ‘conical/bite’ lock washers. It is hard to tell on video but they have a slight conical shape with small ridges/teeth on the outer rim. So they distort when torqued and bite into the metal a bit.
