For this video we're visiting Simon Nicholls and his fabulous 35mm and digital home cinema. Simon is currently Head of Film for the Courtyard Centre for the Arts Hereford where he oversees all the cinema’s technical aspects as well as curating and booking the venue’s eclectic film programme. He's also now going to be one of the team at the British Film Collectors Convention and as I type this, with less than four weeks to go until the BFCC on 29th April 2023, we wanted to get together to see if the portable 35mm projector he thought might be suitable was something we both thought was up to the job. It seems to be perfect so you'll also get to see that machine in this video.
To find out more about Simon and his history with film, go to www.simonnichollsfilm.co.uk
The British Film Collectors Convention web site is at www.bfcc.biz and to see the NEXT EVENT on 29th April 2023 simply click on the NEXT EVENT option from the menu on the right hand side of the screen.

I impressed with how many quality friends you have. Your friends trust you and allow you to show their home and theater. We all get to share in the knowledge and love for film you share back and forth with each other. Truly amazes me how 35mm projectors have changed over the years, what a special time in cinema history.

I think it's because we're all enthusiasts that when we get together the enthusiasm is infectious. We don't often meet up with other people with the very same interest so it's nice to be able to share it. That's what I like best about the BFCC because so many of us get together there. Running the films at the BFCC rather gets in the way of the social aspect but that's the main focus of putting on a collector convention so there's no way around it. Maybe we'll see you there one day Bob. John.

Of course not all of the great films are available on a 4K disk but my new LG OLED,combined with an excellent Sony player, gives me picture quality that takes my breath away. Lawrence Of Arabia,2001,several BBC nature documentaries.... I guess that rules me out as a "videophile".

@@jackfitzpatrick8173 2001 A Space Odyssey and Lawrence of Arabia owe the excellent picture quality on 4K disc to their 65mm origins Jack. Those are the discs that make the whole pastime worth investing in a video projector for. I know many people have only ever known telly but projection isn't as daunting as it's made out to be and you only need the projector and a white wall to make a start. John.

@@moviecollector5920John,of course it's true that what one sees in their living room...or home theater...starts at the filming itself (equipment used, film used, lighting, etc) then moves to post production (editing, etc, etc) and then to the transfer process of getting it onto a 4K disc...or onto 65mm acetate. I guess part of my attitude toward a setup like the one seen here results from living in an apartment (flat) small enough to make anything bigger than a 55 inch flat screen TV rather silly. ;-) There is an Imax theater in my town that I've been meaning to visit...including to see Top Gun Maverick. But laziness has won out so far. Jack

@@jackfitzpatrick8173 Most cinemas using the IMAX name aren't really IMAX Jack, just video projection with one of four different varieties and not always on particularly big screens, so be careful that you don't expect 1990's 35mm master print image quality and get shown something second rate. We lived in the West End of London for many years and the living room was 10ft 3" wide. The screen we currently project on is ten feet wide and it's that size because it was the largest drop down we could fit in our London flat. You really don't need a big space to enjoy projection at home. And there's really nothing else quite like it. By the way, 65mm was the filming gauge which was then printed to 70mm for release prints. The extra 5mm was to provide room for the outer sound stripes. John.

Projection is cinema Dave so don't wait forever if it's something you really feel you want to do. If you have a suitable wall then just paint it brilliant matt white and you'll be ready for an entry level projector. Trevor got the £900 (ish) Optoma and he's very impressed with it. That's really all anyone needs but salesmen and 'experts' start talking about expensive screens and nonsense like that and it puts people off. None of that is required because nothing beats a flat white wall. Paint some black masking around the projected image or blu-tak some black card to the wall and hey presto, you have a cinema. John.

You have six genuine IMAX cinemas in Canada currently. There may be more but that was the number of them that screened OPPENHEIMER in 15/70. Given the success of that film and the blatant, obvious, undoubted superiority of film it displayed it's wholly possible that it's opened many eyes within the [former] film industry. We can but hope! John Franklin and I have been discussing the next step with regard to the conventions. He put so much work into the latest one in Leicester and all I could do (apart from one site visit three or four months ago) was to give him encouragement over the phone. These things are too much for one person but I hope we'll be able to carry on with the new Film Is Fabulous! type of event incorporating a British Film Collectors Convention. If not then we'll have to see where that leaves us and whether there is a future at all. John.

@@micjoseph6250 I think England is the place for movies and home movies Mic. We still have a few cinemas that screen film in the centre of London and when it comes to the BFI IMAX they are more regularly screening the genuine IMAX films after their success throughout this year so if you're ever planning a holiday maybe put London on the top of your wish list because not only can you coincide with a genuine IMAX screening but you'll have the Prince Charles just up the road on the fringe of Leicester Square for 35mm and 70mm throughout the week, FOPP for the most successful movie and music store in the UK and the original HMV reopening on Oxford Street which is the longest shopping street in the world I believe. Hopefully we'll have another film collector event scheduled next year too so is there any better world destination for us movie lovers? But if I don't see you here I really must get to Canada one day. John.

@@dalecarney2581 When you see a video projection in a cinema it should be a DCP which is 'Digital Cinema Package' and not a disc of any kind. Some do occasionally try to get away with running a Blu-ray disc but that's not quite up to the 2K of a DCP. I only get tempted off my backside and travel to a cinema if I know a film print is being screened as I've had so many terrible disappointments with video projection in cinemas and so the thing to do is to find cinemas near you that do still have real film projection facilities and keep a look at their web site or whatever else to find out when they are screening a film. Genuine IMAX theatres all over the world will be getting 15/70 print of OPPENHEIMER for 23rd July so don't rule out flying to get to one of those. But check they do still have the real McCoy and aren't trying to palm you off with a 2K or 4K video projection because even some of the purpose built IMAX houses removed their IMAX film projectors. Morning Andy. The lightbox I have was a £245 purchase on eBay and they're still up there. They do require a double sided poster to make them really special and that's what makes the Spider-Man 2 poster because it's fairly ordinary otherwise. Having said that, I don't think the Terminator 2 poster is double sided and that looks good in Simon's lightbox. His also has the added attraction of the famous 'Empire' cinema logo at the top which I'd love to have too. I was asking for trouble Erik. And I've actually had some today as I was checking some of the Super 8 reels for the big day and the HTI lamp immediately dislodged from its holder. I then spent the next hour or so trying to get it back in and then ran about an hour of other reels whereupon a drive belt has started causing a serious vibration so the back's got to come off to give it a bit of grease to settle it back down. That's always worked in the past so I'll have to see how that goes if I get a chance tomorrow. By the way, this is the only HTI equipped projector in the UK that I know about which means it is the brightest of all Super 8 projectors here and it was installed for the BFCC about 20 years ago now, probably longer than that actually. I have more than 2000 movies available by just starting a server, pushing some buttons on a single remote control and using a super silent projector that doesn't need a lot of energy to run. It lasts over 10000 hours without maintenance can project 3D movies and is very bright and sharp. Not talking about the availability of 35mm films, the need for a dedicated projector room for heating and sound reasons and preparing for quite a while for just wathing a single film. Don't get me wrong. I AM fascinated by this 35mm projector, I love watching these videos but still: Thank god there is a technology to enjoy cinema like experiences for me now without having to deal with all that.

Every home should have a dedicated cinema with 35mm in it Michael. Seriously though, if you do ever get the chance to play with real film don't miss it. Video is a pastime whereas film is a proper hobby. Much of the fun of film collecting is in the preparation and everything else that goes with it but like you, I'm very pleased to have video projection of the quality we enjoy today. I never would have thought video would reach such heights in quality. John.

@@moviecollector5920 I get what you mean but I am more of a film fan. I love watching and analysing them, listening to commentary tracks to learn even more about it - I don't care about the technical aspect of projecting. It must work and provide the best picture quality possible. But how this is achieved is not important for me. But nevertheless I love watching your videos and can understand your passion of the hardware side. But after trying to digitilize my fathers 8mm films (shot from 1962 to 1989) and having to deal with hot lamps, stuck film, etc. I gave up. This should tell you how lost I am with the hardware side. People watch football without ever having played the game. I'm one of those people.

@@sanctanox I played football for far too long and I'll pay for that in the end. But I found I couldn't watch the professionals on the telly quite a few years before I packed it in as i can't stand all the cheating. Transferring 8mm and Super 8 films to video is a cumbersome process and there aren't many people around who can do it well. I have a whole load sitting upstairs awaiting transfer but I don't know when I'm likely to get the time, probably not until Christmas at the earliest. It's a long job and not just the transfer process because authoring a disc and then checking it all thoroughly once it's done eats a load more hours. But getting into film projection using Super 8 is surprisingly easy and that tends to make the other gauges look more viable. I have always loved watching films almost from before I can remember but it's the moving image that fascinates me more than anything else I think. With film you can see the images that make it all up and even hold them in your hand. We can't do that with video and something is lost a result. Real film is magic and it's been around since the 1880's in largely the same form all those years. It's still got something that video hasn't when projected even if sometimes the image quality wouldn't be up to what some would expect. Good 35mm should always look pretty special though and that certainly helps. I also like playing at real cinemas as they used to be. Right now, I'm trying to work out how to fit an IMAX GT projector in here.... I think I need therapy! John.

@@moviecollector5920 I can understand the fascination for older technology as you describe it. In my case it is not film but cars. I love manual shifting a car and especially convertibles. My friends cannot understand that. They all drive automatic and can't understand why somebody would love to sit full frontal in the wind. It is a sensation. You mentioned IMAX - this is something special. The closest IMAX cinema is around 70 KM away from here (it is of course digital nowadays but I also loved it when it was analogue). It is located inside "Technik Museum Sinsheim" - they have a fantastic collection of old cars, airplanes, etc. So a win-win-situation for me. Best possible picture quality is so important for me that I drive 70 KM to watch a movie properly even though I have a local cinema - not kidding - 500 meters away from my house. I can walk there in a few minutes. But each time I come out of this IMAX I feel like a left earth for 2-3 hours and just came back. Avatar 2 in 3D with high frame rate in 4K was something I will never forget. I was IN the film as if I used a VR-headset. If I had the money, I would spend it for a home cinema that good. So, yes, therapy is a word "normal" people would use.

@@sanctanox I'm a classic car enthusiast too Michael so we have that in common too. Film is still the best exhibition format for movies but I'm not really a 3D fan. I did finally just watch the original Avatar on the 3D Blu-ray but the only thing I think I can say about it is that the 3D is very good. Apparently the sequel actually has a decent story so I will try to give that one a go. If you watched it with the LCD glasses then I bet it was just about the best 3D ever since Omnimax 3D which, unless something incredible has just happened, is still unsurpassed. Video projection in cinemas is something I've avoided and why I had to stop going to the cinema regularly. Too many bad experiences led me to give up so it's good that IMAX is still just about kicking as that gets me on the road but I won't go to any of the faux IMAX cinemas that can't screen the real McCoy. I have seen some faux IMAX screenings at the BFI IMAX and all I can say is that it's still good to see a movie on a big screen even if the image quality isn't what it was in premiere cinemas in the 1990's. Right, I'm off for an evening drive in my 1977 Triumph TR7 now cos' you've made me fancy a blast up the roads where I can feel everything under every tyre, hear the rorty engine and chuck the stick through the gears. I'm not into convertible cars though, I was a child of the wedge era when ragtops had been outlawed and all sports cars and supercars were being designed as fixed head coupes. Those were the days. Those days are gone now and 35mm is traded openly and freely without any fear of prosecution. As for other titles, some are a little faded now as they were pre-low fade stocks in 1982 but others such as Alien from 1979 have not faded noticeably at all. Blade Runner has but one of the reels is low fade which means it must have been a bit of a mix and match to make up a good print from two when the bulk of the general release prints were shipped over from the USA after the theatrical release was finished there. Shipping english language prints over when releases of films were identical between the two nations saved a lot of money. Unfortunately only few directors like Christopher Nolan do that. If you ever get a chance to come to California you should visit the academy of motion pictures museum because they screen older films on 35mm and sometimes 70mm film once in a while. Next month they will be screening The Dark Knight in 35mm which I’m excited to go see. It’s sad that most movies are shot digitally nowadays and it’s full of cgi. Edgar Wright shot Last Night In Soho on 35mm but unfortunately it was then transferred to a miniature 2K video and worked on from there. This seems to be happening increasingly nowadays but someone needs to get a grip and at least transfer nearer to 6K or finish the film on film and then whack out the low quality videos from there. But there are still quite a few people around who successfully insist on a film shoot. Christopher Nolan has the clout to insist on genuine IMAX now and that's brilliant. It added to the magic of the movies and that's something we've lost now but we really shouldn't have. It's great to sometimes hear a projector running again at the BFI IMAX. Cinemas need to get back to screening film when they can as it's so much more lifelike and more involving than the electronic image of video. Then again, I've been watching genuine IMAX lately and it's not fair to compare video to IMAX but even 35mm has that more natural look that just can't be quantified. John.

Mainly you've had to be into film collecting for a long, long time. We all had to make contacts and find fellow enthusiasts around the world but thankfully some of the 35mm prints avoided the crusher. It was illegal to own them until relatively recently so it was all a bit hush, hush really. Film collectors have proved to be a God send though because so many films and television programmes were kept in private collections down the ages and have found their way back from the dead as a result. I'm actually hoping to get an interview with one of the people responsible for getting 'lost' Dr. Who episodes back from the dead soon. John.

Hello John. I may be able to make it that weekend. How does watching the movies work and do you have a schedule of what you are showing in place? I'm very interested as my grandfather was a projectionist in a small Scottish town after serving with the Canadian army in WW2. He absolutely imbedded the love of cinema in me. He took myself and my sister swimming in Coventry often and we often went to the Cinema afterwards. It was a cinema called Theatre one in Coventry which was an independent cinema that had 5 screens of varying capacities. It's no longer there, but not far from there was a shop that sold second hand and new super 8 reels. I loved our time together when we watched those's super 8 reels together, that my grandad bought. Setting everything up and the magic of Cinema in your own home was something not many people back then could do....or afford. I loved your review of the Criterion 4k release of Cinema Paradiso. That movie is very special and I love it so much. My Grandad was also of Italian descent. Keep up the great work John. Hopefully I can make it to the event and it would be nice to meet you and other genuine cinema lovers. Take care, John.

I think we'll be showing Super 8 all morning and then probably a 4K projection during the lunch break followed by another Super 8 show and then 35mm and 4K until the close of business at 5pm. I'm hoping we can get the 24ft wide screen up to really show it all off. If not, the hall's 16ft roll down screen has been paid for just in case but it won't be quite so impressive. John.

@@jessechristensen6028 Good to know they're not messing with these classics other than to make them look their best. There were re-releases in the early to mid-1990's that were exceptionally good and that resulted in fabulous full length Super 8 copies of top quality. It was always best to get a first run print though as the lab didn't appear to look after Super 8 negatives particularly well by then. First run prints were so clean but later runs tended to have too much 'sparkle' which is 'know-it-all' speak for negative dust, I don't have a copy of Cinderella but I remember the check print being fabulous. The only Disney release from this period that did look sub-standard was the first they did which was The Little Mermaid and that was because Disney had lost the knowledge of how to produce a 16mm negative and messed it up. Blacks tended to blue with The Little Mermaid and the definition just wasn't there. Still very special to own it at the time though. John.

Others probably will have though so it will possibly be a good starting point if you do get along to the convention. Barry from Independent 8 should be there but not with a table so might be worth speaking to him beforehand and you'll find Independent 8 on www.bfcc.biz if you haven't seen what he has for sale already. Just click on the Independent 8 menu item on the right hand side of the main page. Not many dealers find 35mm equipment for sale but there are some. Forget all these new state of the art fandangled laser projectors and the like, that there 35mm projector is a thing of dreams. If you know film, you know digital can’t touch the analogue nature of film. Todays generation is completely obsessed with sharpness, but look at any iconic picture of the last two centuries…99% shot on film, and how many are super sharp.?? Yet those images are imprinted in your mind. The sailor and the nurse kissing in Time Square New York after World War 2 ended. Muhammad Ali stood over Sonny Liston or George Foreman, take your pic😏 after knocking them out. The list is endless…you must have an image in your own minds, chances are it was shot on 35mm or 6x6 film, which is nearly Imax size at 56mm. I currently have a Sony laser projector, I would love love love to be able to house that 35mm and learn to use it. Then there’s the little matter of buying the movies on 35mm, I’ve already amassed some 470 4Ks over the last year and a half. I think my wife would divorce me if I went down the 35mm route. God help the cinephile 😂😂 One of, if not my fave, video you’ve posted to date. Brilliant and thank you🙏🏼

@@moviecollector5920 I think the only thing missing was the Pearl & Dean intro😂 I may have mentioned in a previous comment, on another post of yours, I still shoot on film, both 35mm and medium format, although not as much lately. Anyone reading this that is in the know, will know depending on film stock, how that can influence the natural look of an image, the same goes for movies shot on film. Take Man of Steel for argument sake, the film stock that was used to shoot the movie was to enhance and make the reds and blues standout, the film is then further manipulated at the colour grading stage. If anyone wants to see a director that was dedicated to his craft of shooting on film, watch The Grandmaster, which was shot on the last rolls of Fujifilm, which inherently enhances the colours green and blue. Film stock also influences the colour palette and cinematography of a movie, from the landscape, the decor, to wardrobe and to whatever is being put in front of us scene after scene. The movie itself is a stylistic martial arts movie with amazing choreography and cinematography. The movie is a labour of love, and it seems the director wanted to justice to each last frame of the last ever rollIs of this film. I’d recommend people to go find this film. t was the original 35mm film comparisons of your reviews that drew me to your channel initially, because you were comparing 4K to the original 35mm prints in most cases, and that was unique. A lot of the KZbinrs, talk the talk about film being organic and try and explain why grain is present on 4K discs, or “digital noise” to the millennials but it seems a lot of them have read up on what they are saying and have never worked with film to even be talking about it. None of them talk about how natural an image looks on film, as they don’t have an original negative to compare to a digital image. I don’t mean to sound condescending or come across like I’m all knowing, but to understand something well, isn’t it best to experience something first hand and then better convey that to the masses. I think that way the passion can be seen exuding from a person about a given subject. At least that’s my thoughts on the matter, as I can clearly see your love of film, film projection and movies. Your best reviews, for me are the ones where you intertwine the 4K release of a movie with its brief but concise film history before it found its way onto its present form. Fascinating and enlightening. I would love to get down to one of the BFI or BFCC meetings and just listen in on groups just enthusing over original films, the prints, the projectors and anything else the events bring. Apologies for the long reply, I know todays society prefer 30sec snippets and 3 word replies, I’m happy to say I’m old school and like a good face to face conversation. 😊

Film projectors from the 1920's were still in cinemas when the big downgrade took place in 2011 and they were still in place because 35mm remained the worldwide standard throughout all the years and could have different light sources, reel extenders, lenses and sound system readers added onto them. The top set of rollers on this Victoria 5 is the Dolby Digital reader which makes things look a little more complication than they really are. But all the rollers everywhere ensure the film is not under strain at any time and so very kind to it to ensure every print a long, undamaged life expectancy. John.

35mm and 70mm are still around Bella but mainly it's second rate video projection now. IMAX video projection have three or four different versions to their own design with dual laser at just over 4K being regarded as the ultimate but some say DOLBY have superior imagery with their 4K video projector. None match up to a good 35mm print through my eyes but then 35mm is reckoned to be about 6K so that's to be expected. 15/70 IMAX is the ultimate. I stopped going to cinema when the downturn started to really hit home by around 2005 and after a few big disappointments where poor quality video projection ruined what I was watching, I now only venture out occasionally when I know the cinema I'm going to has a genuine film print. I think they tend to go for a lot more money today but 20 years ago a top feature title could be had for around £100. You can probably add a nought onto that these days. But lesser titles will change hands for far less. Have to be careful with films up to 1982 which is when low fade stock came in but some are still good from the 1970's and previous to this dye-transfer Technicolor prints are the ones to seek as they don't fade. However, acetate film stock is prone to returning to its constituent parts at times and this is known as vinegar syndrome. Fortunately, polyester stock replaced it. John.

Nice set up.. Me and my friends were discussing 4k films yesterday, personally I don't think they are worth it. I can't see any resolution improvement over Bluray. I know you keep saying this same thing Lborg and I keep responding but with Jaws I am able to assure you that the 4K is perceptibly better with regard to colour. Much better actually. But in terms of definition we're in agreement. However, would we see a difference if we were projecting onto a 24ft wide screen? There's no chance in seeing a difference in clarity on even the largest telly so absolutely right, but on a huge cinema sized screen, I think we would perceive the difference. Academic of course, as hardly any of us are ever likely to have a permanent home setup so enormous. Then again, outside shows in the summer perhaps. Hmmmmm. John.

@@cp070476 There's something wrong somewhere for certain because each of these titles you've mentioned look fabulous on my system with the Blu-rays being perceptibly second best, albeit still of very high quality. All our systems vary and it's going to be a case of finding out what is going wrong with yours through trial and error. My new video projector is producing different results to the older model but some discs do look better on the older model than they do on the new. The new projector seems to generate even better definition from each disc most of the time which means that Blu-ray is closer to the 4K with most titles even though I can see the more accurate, more film-like colour and density of the 4K. Next on my wish list is the 820 series Panasonic 4K player which may make the difference between the two formats more obvious but equally, it may make it even more difficult to discern. Last night I watched a 4K disc that didn't have HDR and the difference between that and the Blu-ray seemed impossible to tell but I did feel that the 4K was better defined with slightly better density, possibly due to superior colour over the Blu-ray. So don't give up too easily because the undoubted superiority of 4K with HDR is there, you've just got to find it! John.
