Festivals Are Coming! West Delhi’s Kumhar Colony Is Where You Head For All Festive Decor!
August 17, 2023
With the festive season around the corner, there is plenteous you must have planned for it. Before you start scouring through the markets for the best pocket-friendly and Modi ji’s Make in India Diwali decorations, explore the heaven of pottery in West Delhi called Kumhar Colony. Translated into English, Kumhar Gram means ‘ Village of Potters’.Kumhar Colony
Located in Uttam Nagar, the place is a hub of potters who create intricately patterned pottery for Diwali artefacts. The Kumhars or potters here have been in the business since several generations- from diyas, idols of deities to other festive decorations, these superbly skilled potters create curios and decor to bring to life all of your festive plans, with potter at his wheel, or women preparing clay, common sights here.
Kumhar Colony
This potters’ village, been one of the few places keeping Indian craftsmanship alive, is very much a part of the thriving metropolis of Delhi. The operations here run like clockwork with efficiency that could put industries to shame. Amidst a stream of brick houses and workshops lies India’s largest potters’ colony nestled deep inside Uttam Nagar, home to over 400 potter families since the early 1970s.
Kumhar Colony
A main street running across the length of the village with alleys running perpendicular, is dotted with shops selling earthenware on either side, concealing the potters’ homes behind them. Dirt, construction dust, cowpats, narrow alleys strewn with garbage and a constant stream of cars, motorbikes and e-rickshaws maybe a sore sight, but these potters remain unfazed while getting about creating little bits of delights that find place, burning in ghee, in your homes during Diwali…. no breezy feat that!
Kumhar Colony
The festivities may still have time for you, but for these kumhars they will begin sooner. A month before the festivals the wholesalers from across India descend on this small colony to buy diyas, surahis, pots, urulis (water vessel) and ornamental vases. If you catch them live, you can get your hands on some of the most authentic Indian handcraft…. and a diya at INR 2!
Kumhar Colony
The Kumhar Colony is home to 12 National Award winning potters. Harkishan, Giriraj Angoori Devi and Giriraj Prasad being among them. A proud feat for these humble potters. No surprise then that the handcrafted earthenware moulded by them, is sold across the country and around the world!
