Hi Adrian. Thanks for a great video. I noticed that you put the Carbon in the wash first and the yeast after this. On the instructions that came with the Still, it tells you to put the Yeast in before the Carbon. What do you think?

Hey Adrian, Thanks for the videos. I love them and find them simple to follow. I've got some questions if you got 5 mins: What if I use 2.5kgs of Dextrose and 8 litres of water? Will it take longer to ferment to the correct level? Shorter? What if I used way to much water like 12litres? What if my wash only sits at about 18 degrees? What if it drops to 15 sometimes.. I know the fermentation will stop but is it okay to just then get it up to above 18 deg and it all continues? Do you find the 25l Carboy with the airlock better, worse or the same as using the 10 litre Airstill supplied container (which is what I am currently using)? What are the benefits of moving to a 25l Carboy? Sorry for the long questions.. it's my first time fermenting.. :-)

I just use normal sugar, it's cheaper and seems the same, maybe your alcohol level will be slightly more with dextrose but perhaps someone else can provide a better answer on that. Its all about the ratio of water and sugar/dextrose. If you add more water then add more sugar. Otherwise the amount of alcohol will be reduced. Don't over fill too much in case it foams up when fermenting. You can get heat pads and belts to keep your ferment warm. You can also wrap it in a blanket to insulate it. Just make sure it doesn't get hotter than 30 degrees. I use a heat pad in winter and it's great without a blanket. Don't use heat pads until after 24 hours has passed from adding the yeast. Belts are cheaper but a heat mat will do a better job at keeping it warm if it's cold. Both can be found on eBay. The advantage of the bigger fermenter with the airlock is you can visually see if it's still fermenting. I like the size of it and it's worth it to get another 6L of booze. I still do the ferment with both at the same time and share the yeast/carbon/clearing agents. They ferment basically the same, and because it's bigger it can retain heat better to reduce temperature fluctuations that the smaller one could be more exposed to. Hope this helped

What shall I expect or should change to the process if I am only using baker yeast with no liquid carbon or any additives?
@outie555two2 жыл бұрын
Baker's yeast will not get as high alcohol content. It will still work though but maybe either give you less quantity at 40% alcohol, or same quantity at about 30-35% alcohol. This is just a guess though so real world results may differ. You don't need the liquid carbon if you let it all settle for a few more days to a week longer. Such as when it finishes fermenting, you will stop getting bubbles and the wash will naturally sink the dead yeast to the bottom and clear it self up without additives. Just takes longer before you can run it through a still.
@askimbalim11 Жыл бұрын
Is it necessary adding carbon to the must ?
@outie555two Жыл бұрын
Not 100% needed, just let it sit after it's fermented and the yeast will eventually settle to the bottom anyway

Hey outie555 were do you get the turbo carbon for fermentation, and the activated carbon for filtering at the end Cheers rob
@outie555two4 жыл бұрын
eBay for the stuff added to the wash, search for something like "still spirits clear carbon". The filtering carbon, search for "activated carbon granules" I use the ones from coconut husks as they are good grade. If it says safe for fish tanks then it will also be good grade (not good grade could kill the fish)

do you notice a difference using white sugar over brewing sugar?
@outie555two4 жыл бұрын
Haven't used brewers sugar but as it's running through a still and then through carbon filters, if there is any difference you might not notice it. Plus brewers sugar costs a lot more, but if your making beer then it's worth it to get a better flavour.

Heh hey. Just wondering , i'm following your video and you look like you have the same fermenter vessel as me but mine is 25L to the top whereas you look like you filled up to the line which is 20L. So mine filled all the way up to the top, Iand i'm hoping it's OK with out the air gap and it doesn't overflow cause a disaster. I'll find out soon. So.just confirm do you do 25L or 20L plus the 10L? Newb here. Thanks. Take it ez.
@outie555two6 жыл бұрын
no, mine sounds like it is probably bigger. my fermenter (the big one) is from my Coopers home brew beer kit. have a look at 3:20 I fill it to 25 L (and still have some room for probably another 5 liters until it would overflow. i have marked my fermenter so it is easier to read when filling.at 3:20 you can see the lower mark is 20L, middle is 23L (with lines on each side), and top i have 25L written. I do a 25L of wash in the larger fermenter - with 6 KG sugar. Plus the 10L of wash in the smaller fermenter - with 2.2 KG sugar. The wash will bubble up and get frothy on the top as it ferments, but if there is enough gap in your fermenter you should hopefully be ok. if not, i would suggest draining some of the wash out through the tap to leave at least an inch or two gap between the top of the wash and the lid. if you are careful there is no reason why you couldn't let what you drained off to keep fermenting in a separate container. if you do that, don't seal that container obviously or it will blow. cover the lid to keep stuff out or be creative with a wet tea towel. over the top to stop dust getting in but the gasses to escape as it ferments, or just top it in the sink if it's not much. as a very basic rule, divide the wash by 4 and that is how much alcohol at 40% you can get. i mention this as if you end up draining off 4 liters so your ferment doesn't bubble out of the air breather/bubble valve, then you might as well try to ferment that in another container as when its distilled you will get a liter of 40% spirit out of it. so that would be worth your time. if it was only 400 ml that got drained off, then that's probably not worth your time to get 100 ml spirts if it ferments. let me know how it goes either way as you can tell by the length of my reply that you o me interested!
@namenameson83536 жыл бұрын
outie555 holy crap that clarified it lol thanks. I'm with you here. What I've done is tap out 5L from the 25L vessel and have put it in the other 25L I have which is doing the extra 10L. Better that than I get overflow or something. I'll let you know what kind of success I get from this. Thanks again for the demo videos so i can learn how all this goes. Cheers mate.
@namenameson83536 жыл бұрын
hey hows it going. so i was a bit worried cos i thought it was supposed to bubble heaps especially in the first 24hrs, but it wasnt bubbling at all unless i squeezed the vessel, so im like whats going on did i not have enough yeast for the wash cos i tried to do more wash than i was supposed to - just like you did with the extra 10L vessel. anyway, turns out the reason was i put too much water in the airlock!!! too much water in the airlock stops it from bubbling. so i reduced the water down to just a little bit after the S bend and its bubbling away happily now. awesomeness. looking forward to my first distilling. l8r

Your method seems a bit stingy mate, the packet says it'll do 8kg of sugar or 9kg of dextrose. If you want to kick off a second 10lt, wait 24 hrs and drain off 1-5lt and top it off to 25 again and use what you drained as a starter for the second vessel with 4kg of sugar. That should get you a 20% wash and net you about 10 litres of 60% when you distill...

@@outie555 I use a $180 pot still off ebay with a coil in a saucepan on top of a large pot with 4 clamps. They are easily found. 1kg dextrose gets me 9 bottles and I run from 75% down to 50% getting 3 bottles out of a 10lt pot. You can now buy a 20-30lt pot for $200. Last time I did a stripping run right down to 25% and kept throwing it back in the next batch and by the 3rd it was pouring out so much good juice I ran out of bottles and started putting it in old moccona jars. I buy Turbo 8, Carbon and clear in a 6 pack off ebay much cheaper than the shops. Throw your air still away man, it's a toy for making distilled water for your wife's iron.
