Just as the title states, we'll take a quick look at my trick for removing a hanger bolt from a bun foot so that we can then install a dowel screw. Hanger bolts are useful in securing a wooden member to a threaded metal component but sometimes you might wish to join two wooden components in a situation where a conventional bolt or screw simply won't work. Dowel screws are perfect for this application as they're much like coarse threaded all-thread and will join the two wooden members without an exposed fastener. Both items present issues whether removing or installing but in this video we'll see some simple methods that make it easy enough.

I realized after watching the video I referred to the "nuts" as "screws" I apologize, clearly I was concentrating more on the task at hand rather than articulating my dialog.

Please I have a question. I have a low settee that I want to raise by 10cm, to be more comfortable. The wooden leg is 10cm and I would need a 20cm leg. The hanger bolt in at the moment is 48.3mm total length with only 23.3mm threaded for the wooden side. What length of hanger bolt would better or can I make do with the current length of hanger bolt? Sorry for the delay, I've been quite busy as of late. Your current hanger should work depending on the amount of weight and use of the piece of furniture. increasing the hanger bolt length might also involve a larger diameter bolt depending on relative availability. As well, by increasing the length of the leg, a larger diameter leg might well add more stability, it's been my experience that any leg attached exclusively with a single hanger bolt with no other support should be kept as short as possible, on small tables or stands, longer legs will remain stable but on heavy furniture, seats, chairs, couches, etc, anything more than 4 inches or 10-12cm can, at times, snap at the top with either the hanger breaking/bending or simply stripping out of the wood if weight becomes unbalanced.
