Home Free was originally formed in 2001 by Chris Rupp[1] in Mankato, Minnesota, when some of its members were still in their teens.[5] The five founding members were brothers Chris and Adam Rupp, Matt Atwood, Darren Scruggs, and Dan Lemke. They took their name from a boat owned by Atwood's grandfather who helped support the group financially in their early years.[6] The group began as a hobby for the singers, but they gradually grew in experience and popularity. By 2007 they had enough of a following to pursue music full-time. During this period, the Rupp brothers and Atwood formed the core of the group, with Atwood singing lead tenor. Other members of the group came and went. Current member Rob Lundquist, another Minnesotan, joined in 2008.[7] For much of the group's history they worked with many talented bass singers, but did not have a full-time committed bass voice. In 2007 Chris Foss sang with them. Elliott Robinson was added as bass in September 2008, and was replaced in June 2009 by Troy Horne. Later that year, Horne left to rejoin the House Jacks. To replace Horne they turned to Tim Foust, who first sang with them as a guest on their 2010 tour. A Texas native, Foust was then pursuing a career as a singer/songwriter of country music and had recently released a solo album, but was not ready to sign on full-time. Matthew Tuey sang with the group in the interim of 2011, until Foust joined them full-time in January 2012.[7] In 2012, Austin Brown was working on a Royal Caribbean cruise ship as a featured singer in their production shows. When Home Free joined the cruise as a guest performing group, they met and became close. Brown, who was born in Tifton, Georgia, let Home Free know that he would be interested in joining the group if they ever had an opening. At the end of 2012 lead singer Matt Atwood and his wife, who had married the previous year, were expecting their first child. Finding the group's touring schedule incompatible with family life, and having an opportunity to take over his family's real estate business in Mankato, Atwood made the decision to retire from the group. Home Free then invited Brown to join as lead tenor. He sang his first show with the group in October 2012, and became full-time in January 2013.[8] In 2015 they made a guest appearance on Kenny Rogers's holiday album Once Again It's Christmas on the track "Children Go Where I Send Thee"; a music video was released in November 2015.[9] On March 18, 2016 it was announced that, after sixteen years performing with the group, co-founder Chris Rupp would be leaving to pursue a solo career. He would be replaced after May 8 by Adam Chance, formerly of Street Corner Symphony. I found this history about Home Free on Wikipedia, I hope you don't mind me posting it here, if it's too much info, feel free to delete it I completely understand.

@@L8bloomer_Audi Adding to Sherry's post, Home Free competed, and won, the 4th season of NBC's 'Sing Off.' Each of the episodes of their competition is available on YT as compilations and individually. If this is something which interests you, would recommend the ones which include their pre-show interaction with the judges as well as the post-performance commentary from the panel. (Some YT vids just show their performances w/o the additional content.)

This was an awesome history of Home Free. The only nit I have to pick () is that when Tim was first asked to help out on tour, he was working in LA writing and singing almost anything BUT country music. At that time Home Free had only a basic country soul. Tim didn't want to join for two reasons, Minnesota winter and country music, which he was trying to get away from (both ). He finally accepted and thus began the current era. It was during Home Free's stint on the "Sing Off" where, after their first country audition, they were prepared to singe something more popish. The producers convinced them to embrace their country soul and they have done that ever since, even coutrifying some non country songs.

Such a genius touch to show the silhouette of the fellas in front of the window. I know some see it as a "ghost"y reference but it strikes me as a reflection of the POW/MIA flag. We'll never know just how many of those met the same fate as the soldier of this song. 😥

There are a number of videos out there with both Chris Rupp and Adam Chance as the baritone. For a look at an earlier iteration of the group check out Home Free on WGN from 3/25/2011 singing a cover of Train’s Hey, Soul Sister. At this time the group still had Matt Atwood as lead/high tenor and Elliot Robinson was the bass, so no Tim or Austin. kzbin.info/www/bejne/m3jRlWWPnZZ5oq8

Only 5 voices together, they sound better than the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. The focus on lyrics, hard to hear in Dire Straits' version, plus the beautiful borrowed arrangement make it heartbreaking. PLUS the desert memorial in sad splendor is perfect.

Wasn’t that beautiful?!! Loved Tim’s low notes. Loved the almost black and white film. Tim and Chance looked ghost like in the windows. Loved the echoes. It’s originally from Dire Straits and it’s mostly guitar based while this is voice based. Home Free is excellent. I love soldiers too. My grandfather, father, brother and nephew all served. I’m sorry you weren’t able to. You might really like their version with Lee Greenwood of God Bless the USA. They also brought in the USAF Singing Sergeants which is so cool. It’s a great remake. Also most of the group has been together since 2013. Adam, the beatboxer, started the group in 2000 and this group has been all together since 2016. Chris, Adam’s brother and co-founder, was in the group til 2016 when he left to go solo. Chance (in front on left) took over so they’ve been together for 6 years but most of the group has been together for almost 10 years since 2013. Originally, they were founded 22 years ago. Great reaction Audi!😍

A great heartfelt reaction. Thank you for being willing to serve and for your back-story. My son applied but was turned down as he'd had asthma as a child but was told he could appeal or re-apply at a later date; he was heading into university so decided to focus on his education. 4 years later, he has his degree and is starting the process again; he's waiting on appointments for some extra medical tests that are required but very much wanting to serve his country (Canada).

This is such a powerful song. Yes, I agree this group is impactful. They have been together with this group of 5 since 2016, when Adam Chance replaced Chris Rupp, Adam's brother. Chris was the founder of this group and can be seen in the older videos usually wearing a hat. He was ready to pursue solo projects and stepped down. The other 4 have been together for 10 years at least.

@@L8bloomer_Audi I haven't memorized them, I think you will have a hard time finding anything released before "The Sing-Off" which they won in 2013. You will find a fair number of songs with Chris Rupp (A founder and Adam Rupp's brother) for the 2013 - 2016 era. He was replaced by "Chance" (Baritone) who is the 2nd featured artist in this song. Chris Rupp is bald and wears a Cowboy Hat in many videos (occasionally a ball cap or hatless).
