I really like seeing the live version as it shows who is doing what parts. Tim & Chance are doing the really low notes in the beginning. Chance has his guitar & Austin is playing a mandolin. And Adam is holding down the percussion sounds. Wish it was the longer version of the song. These guys are so supportive of each other's talents & projects.

Live it is more than fantastic.A totally different sound but again so great. I would like Chance to write more often for Home Free. Home Free can just sing anything. Chance with his perfect low voice for this, Tim's slightly lower voice that goes so well with Chance's. Adam who also contributes to the bass, but also shows the undisputed beatboxer / vocal percussionist / vocal artist. Austin who also plays a musical part but then gets into it vocally with his powerful voice. Then Rob who clearly shows his rich operavoice here. And then that harmony that sounds so beautiful. ❤ For me, this is definitely in the Top3 of Home Free songs.

If you look closely at his neck and throat when you think Adam is vocalizing "Skull and Bones!" you'll see he's beatboxing, not singing. The trick with Adam is to look at his neck, not his mouth. If the muscles are working overtime, he's beatboxing. The phrase "Skull and Bones!" is opera Rob showing off his low range.

I love chris with the guys, and I hate to say it, but adding Chance with his versatility and quality of voice was an upgrade. He really compliments the group perfectly.

@@ZaneNicholson I agree with what you said. I will always love Chris, especially for him being the brain child of the group and bringing Adam in with him at the beginning. Still love him and his music endeavors. That being said, I was a fan of Chance’s former group, Streetcorner Symphony when they were on their season of the Sing Off. I was so excited that he was chosen to come into Home Free to fill Chris’ spot. It seems they have a different sound slightly, and have gained popularity and such since Chance has been in the group! This song proves he’s a great musician and artist! This song and performance really should help them get more recognition!

The instrument that Austin is playing is a mandolin. (A mandolin has 8 strings and a ukulele has 4. But they are both smaller than a guitar.) I was surprised to see Austin playing it.

The mandolin is way more difficult to play, because the 8 strings are in sets of two. So isolating certain strings requires far more precision.

@@hlbjazz I hate that it’s hard to find out these things. I miss the old album covers from the 1970’s that listed all the performers and producers, and everyone. The last cd I got only listed the song names and writer. I won’t be surprised if the mandolin is either Austin or Chris. I would be surprised if it’s anyone other than Chance on guitar.

I like this version better. Except maybe for the chuckle at the end of the recorded version, which I think is perfect. The low notes in the beginning are much stronger & louder in the live version. More impactful. Either way, the song sounds incredible.

He was in the live chat for the premiere of the lyric video and said he was overtone singing at the beginning with Tim and Chance. Not exactly sure what that means but it sounded fantastic.

He was answering a question about who was doing the bagpipe-y drone sound (anyone familiar with bagpipe music will know there's a constant sound -- that's the drone made by slowly squeezing the bag -- and then the melody line made by playing the pipes). The bagpipe drone at the beginning -- that's his overtone singing. If he were doing bass, he would likely have been using either throat bass or subharmonics, not overtone singing. Overtone is used to create the perception of polyphony -- more than one note being sung at the same time.

Opera Rob is so much more noticeable in this one. The voice’s overall sound better in this. I hope when they make their own video of this that they do it like this one. The theme for Ubisoft’s purposes in the game has to be arranged specifically for use as sound track in gameplay. I get that. But I still find most of that long version much less exciting than this.
