This is a great option for those who want to do some gunsmithing without a permanately mounted vise. Its great for working on your fire arms anywhere. For about 40 dollars and a little of your time you can make your own gun vise that is very strong and wont move around.

Awesome idea. I would put some type of carpet or material on top of the wood, since your working with tools and small/large parts even chemicals and such, the carpet may be a good choice for retaining spills and drops. Anyways great work again!

you can also try putting a magnetic sheet of paper on the base so that anything that falls will stay on the base. you can get it i a lot of different sizes and/or cut to your preference. Avery makes a lot of variables.

I've used 'polyethylene cutting boards' to make vise blocks. They are pretty durable (and cheap. Kitchenware). Useful when you need to drift a sight off a pistol slide. Saw it with a low speed saw, since a hot blade might melt the poly and gum up the blade.

Being a boater, I have worked with Starboard for years. I've made rifle rest, hammers, slides, and just about everything to do with boats, but never thought of vice jaws. Seeing that Starboard is self lubricating and has a small amount of was in it, it a easy product to work with. Nice vice.

Awesome video, thank you for posting. Couple of questions: 1) What are the dimensions of the cabinet-grade plywood you used? You mentioned 3/4" thick, but what is the length and width? 2) What is the manufacture and model of the drill press vise you used in the video? 3) When installing the ship's rails, did you use glue and nails, or just one or the other? 4) What are the dimensions of the ship rails you used?

Very nice looking, and I like the Starboard idea. I made mine a while back, (before I found this video.) But I just purchased a commercial cookie sheet from a 2nd hand store for maybe $3, cut a piece of 3/4" plywood to size, and mounted the vice in the cookie sheet, using the plywood as a backer board. I also used T-head bolts to be used in my T-rail system.

That's a great idea and I'd steal it, except it wouldn't work for me.... my bench-tops are not level. LOL I guess I could add leveler stand-offs and perhaps a small block between the vice and the base, so I could my big clumsy fingers around the jack screw. But man, I can see the benefits of this for all sorts of projects. Thanks! :)

Great idea! I have a similar vise that isn't being used. (5" jaws/opens to 4") but, because of it's fixed crank handle, I'll mount the vise off-center, so the crank handle can hang over the edge of the table, facing towards me. That will also place the gun/parts closer to me, so I can easily reach everything while sitting in a chair. I'm thinking of installing a little molding around the edge of the board, so that small parts (pins etc) can't roll away. Rubber feet under board for anti-skid.
