I cannot thank you enough!! I’ve been engraving for 3 years and have not been able to find the info to make a palm control amywhere!! And I cannot afford a Lindsay graver … you are f*^%g AWESOME!!! Thank you!! And obviously you’re a very smart dude, thanks again man!

I just ordered the parts, but I got a different brand but hydraulic coupler that looks the same, any thoughts after all this time since this vid on improvements you could or would make?
@travis8543383

One last thing:/ so I made the Lindsay graver, like a steam engine, it’s just not palm control. But it runs off a regular compressor which is worth its weight in gold because you can use a normal size compressor. Highly recommend making one, write me if you need drawings an dimensions, however I’m sure you could figure it out with your eyes closed:)

@@travis8543383 Glad you found it helpful! In retrospect I would have made the taper in the handle either a lot steeper och shallower. So it would either be an on/off function or a smoother transition. That would mean also adjusting the handle pressure and spring for different tips and level of precision and size of work. So I'm more inclined to think a toggle function would be better and then be able to adjust stroke length for the work at hand. I've looked at making a Lindsay style graver as well but I dont have an air compressor. I engrave in a spare bedroom so having a tank there and compressor is a no-go. I've actually started work on a new hand piece but with foot pedal this time. I think being able to focus on only guiding the graver with the hand and not worry about keeping the right pressure on the handle would simplify things for me. I drew up some plans for a hand pressure control single phase pressure graver as well but it's a little more involved as you say, like a steam engine.
@travis8543383
@travis8543383 Жыл бұрын
Yes I made the steam engine graver on my lathe… a tedious task for sure. The little brass “donut “ inside is the trickiest part. You have to press fit a donut in the main tube of the handpiece, with a hole big enough for the shaft of the piston… etc etc. I have a very quiet 2 gallon compressor that I use that is great. Kobalt makes it, but I bet you could use a airbrush compressor too, very quiet. Don’t give up on the hand control. I am trying so hard to figure out what you showed in the video, but need more detail on the parts used for palm control. I ordered the bst1, but had some things here till it arrives, can’t quite make out what the little piece that’s brass that you connected to the coupler? Can u possibly make a vid or send me detailed pics? We could trade plans? Lol

Thank you! No problem, seems to be a pretty small community of people making these and I'm not in it for the money so why not help out? I've run into trouble with my compressor lately though. It's been standing still for a while and now when I run it it sounds like it's under varying strain and it stops from time to time. I'll have to take it apart.

Thank you! Engraving as a concept is pretty overwhelming in general so building your own equipment is just adding another level of complicated to it. If you are serious about learning to engrave I'd suggest buying a machine and engraving vice, if you have to funds for it. I'm just having fun and messing around with my build. All the best!

Just watched the whole video,some great ideas.The vice idea works great,and the graver seems to have good control by your cuts and the sound. Have you got a link to the parts. It will probably be a project that I never finish,but you never know. Have a look at the GRS quick change holders. They just use a groove that holds a rubber gasket that holds the graver in place,with a notch that locates the graver in the same orientation.

I can tell it would be a failed project for me. I've even just ordered another type of graver to try,and I think I have 4 different machines and 5 different hand pieces? How many more do i need. The connection that you hook your compressor hose to its just drilled into the furniture knob at an angle right? And I think I might be able to use a pneumatic quick change coupling from Biltema to make a version of your awesome design. I am also contemplating modifying my airbrush compressor to use with this since I never do any airbrushing any more.

Yep, but the connector I made for it is soldered onto a threaded tube that has a wood grabbing thread. Leaking proved to be an issue there. When I finally get around to treating the wood I'll probably seal it in there with PVA or epoxy.

Hello Karl, what a great hand-controlled graver! I'm really impressed😳👍, I took a few screenshots but still can't see how the airflow is sealed between the two large brass pieces. I mean the one that is fixed in the wooden handle and the inserted brass part that is held by the valve screw. I don't mean the valve part. Could you maybe upload a close-up video for better understanding 😇? this would be so nice thank you 1747rene

Hello! This video is now seven years old and the graver is stowed away somewhere. If I remember correctly you can see an O-ring close to the hex part of the bulkier part of the connector body. The cone seat on the inside is turned and then lapped against it's mating part.

@karlmansson8319

Probably to do with the starting current needed to turn these things. I had a power supply that chickened out on me in the same way at first. This one is from a desktop PC. If I'm not mistaken I think it was a ground issue as well, come to think of it. It was a while since I built this, I'll have to think about it.

In the other hand I made a THUMB AIR CONTROL that I thought was the only one that really made sense until I saw yours.In case you are still interested in it I ´ll give you the link to my two videos.Thanks and congratulatios

Thank you Angel! You design looks nice and robust as well! I've used it for some engraving practice and the occasional initials engraving on watches and on my own silver smithing work. My latest use for it was as a pneumatic cold forging tool for a pair of mokume gane earrings that I'm sculpting into leaves. The greater plan is to use it for engraving the dial of a pendulum clock I'm designing. Thank you for your interest!

Hello mate, one question on the coupler, basically you are using only the body side of it (disassembled) and nothing from the plug that goes into it (apart for using it to make the graver holder). Is it right?
@karlmansson8319
@karlmansson8319 4 жыл бұрын
Yeah, for the valve side it's only the snap coupling. The "plug" is used as the adjustable holder.
@rexmundi8154

You could turn a taper on the end of your set screw and have the mating hole on the tool holder match. That should minimize the distortion of the flat.

Haven’t been able to find a breakdown video of the palm control so I’d thought I’d ask you since it might be similar. Good job! I've been looking for DIY palm controlled handpiece. Perhaps a plunger with very shallow taper and stronger spring would help with finer control of air flow....?
@karlmansson8319
@karlmansson8319 6 жыл бұрын
Thank you! I don't think the length of the taper is of any greater significance in this case, just tilting the handle slightly is enough to let some air through. Keeping the valve fully closed is a greater challenge!

@karlmansson8319
@karlmansson8319 4 жыл бұрын
Huh... No I didn't. Not sure which valve you are referring to, the airflow control valve? Or the coupling for the tubing? Interesting thought but a schrader type valve is a one way valve, no? This system works by an oscillating air pillar. Push and pull.
@markhunter444
@markhunter444 4 жыл бұрын
@@karlmansson8319 The schrader valve is a spring loaded valve and since watching your video I have been thinking about building something similar incorporating the schrader valve and valve body for the flow control. I enjoyed your video by the way, even though I have now spent the 18 hours thinking about how I might be able to build something similar.

this is probably a really dumb question but, the palm control part seems too difficult for me lol, I like the style though, question is if I want to make the same design but without the hand control, how can I get a good seal from the tube to the doorknob?
@karlmansson8319
@karlmansson8319 6 жыл бұрын
Hey Patrick! You will still need a cylinder and piston and a different way to regulate the airflow. Check out Shaun Hughes early videos on his hand engraving machine, he has a foot pedal. I used heat shrink tubing over the brass fitting and then just pressed on the wood after boring it out. Provides a good enough seal for me. Best of luck!

If I were to charge for my time and for sourcing materials I think it would land somwhere close to the cheaper commercial ones, and I think you are better off with one of those (used if you can find it) in terms of serviceability and warranty. I appreciate the interest though! Have a look at Shaun Hughes earlier designs if you just want to get going though. Those are way simpler.
