Excellent informative vid Brendan! I never delved into the DAW stuff, and it wasn't even around when I played in a band (60's - 70's). But maybe I will try getting into it now....

DAW's are a lot of fun, but were pretty confusing for me at first. Eventually I figured out a workflow that works for what I need and I just stick to it. Always new things to learn though :) I would highly recommend Audacity as a starting point. It was very useful for learning the basics like how to add tracks, basic noise reduction, how to use compression, etc. I used it for about 5-6 months and got reaper as a birthday present or I would still be using audacity.

This doesn't really help me right now, but in the future I hope to start using microphones and stuff to record. This shall be pretty useful. Great video as always. :)

I would recommend a used sm58 for your first dynamic mic when you do decide to get into it. It is good for vocals and if you take off the foam cap, it is essentially an sm57 for recording guitar. Good way to get into better recordings on the cheap. And audacity is totally fine for probably 95% of what you and I do on youtube.
