In today's video, Shawn and I finally tackled painting the stairs! If you have been following our attic renovation series, then you know that painting the attic stairs was the project that we were not looking forward to. We finally took a few days and tackled the project an we couldn't be happier with how it turned out! Come along with us as we paint the attic stairs and finish up the last few projects to complete our attic master bedroom space!

It looks great! I would suggest you buy a quart of clear coat to protect it from chipping and since painted stairs can be very slippery and you are looking to start a family in the future you won't want to be slipping down the stairs, I would add a narrow runner up the centre of the stairs in a light grey to go with your walls. You can often find the spindles that they use to hold the carpet to the risers at the restores or think outside of the box for something else to use that's durable.

Looks nice and bright! A suggestion, when you can, add a bit of trim on either side where the stairs meet the wall so it looks "finished."

I did the exact same thing on my stairs, I love it! I love the sound of it when you walk up and down on them too, like an old farm house. My husband and son don’t get it, they want the ugly dirty carpet back, oh well. Thanks for the idea

If you've used regular wall paint, I recommend using a protective coat. I recommend something specifically for floors. Stairs is something you access quite a bit, and that foot traffic will wear your paint down quickly. My usual recommendation is paint that is specifically for floors so you don't have to do a two-step process. Nearly every paint store you go to should carry it. Most products will be water based (soap&water cleanup) but have a oil enriched formula. So it dries much harder and be much more durable than just paint. I work the paint desk at Lowe's, so I'm biased towards the Valspar porch and floor paint. But it looks gorgeous 😍😍😍 I love the white against the gray. I think I personally would have gone to the trouble of staining them, but I love the white! I think I'd hate maintaining the white though 😂

For hours I have been thinking about how to varnish the basement stairs from top to bottom and not stay down in the basement for hours. I thought maybe I could find a solution on KZbin. I found it in 5 minutes and I was wondering why I didn't think to paint only half the stairs first and wait for it to dry. Then the other side on another day. Thank you very much for posting the solution on You Tube. :)

It looks so much cleaner, brighter and more modern. A suggestion would be to fill and sand over the nail holes & paint over it, just to finish it all off. Love it!

I was taught how to paint by a few of the men in my family, when I was young, and every single one of them always said the same thing, "Women never put enough paint on their brush/roller" lol idk why that is but it was just an observation they each had. So with that I'd say, dnt be afraid to get alot more paint on your brush or roller (as long as its not dripping) because it's really made all my paint projects zoom by & sometimes not even need a second coat. Just a tip I'm passing along that helped me. 😊

Looks nice but you will have to put a runner down the center We did this many years ago and I fell down the slippery steps. A runner keeps the center clean also. Attic looks great

I would have never thought of painting the stairs the way you did. I think that was an awesome idea and I will apply this to painting my basement stairs. Half by half. Thank you :-)

You should have sanded the top of the stair and stained it and just painted the bottom half white would have been better for foot traffic. But it still looks gorgeous all white. Makes the area look bigger. Great job!

I painted my stairs about 5 years ago and they have held up pretty well, but I did put carpet in the center of each step and am very happy I did. I would recommend this or put down a few coats of polyurethane . You'll be happy you did.

Maybe add a protective coat, sealer, runner or something. Maybe later you could add an appliqué to the front of the stairs, or to the side trim.

Dang, someone always beats me to it with the same idea. I was going to suggest that out check out the wall decals at the Dollar Tree. You could alternate some sort of a design with inspirational sayings on the risers (vertical surface of the stairway). It would break up the solid "whiteness" of the stairwell, just a touch of "something", not necessarily "busy".

Love how it turned out. Have you thought about maybe painting the top part of the stair (where you step) a diff color? For example, black or gray. I'm thinking about doing this and hope that helps with keeping them clean

Doesn’t it feel good to get a project behind you and then you have a feeling of pride knowing that ‘you’ did it? Good job! You know all that hard work is adding so much property value. IF you want to sell one day, it’s really going to pay off, but for now, just sit back and enjoy!😊👍🏻🏠

You can get like a half moon shape stair like carpet that just stick on very cheap and look good. You stick then in the middle of the steps where you walk up

Suggestion, a line a caulk along the wall and riser would give a clean look. A carpet runner would be an awesome addition and save slipping on the stairs.

Great to see another update on this project. Looks really great. I think a fun carpet runner would be good to prevent the stairs being too slippy and add a pop of color. I find socks on painted stairs can be especially slippy.

Painted steps are very slippery...I hope you get stair treads for the walk area! Those steps would've looked good sanded & stained...personally I do not like painted steps! OR you could have stained the walk part of the steps and painted the kick boards white....Now that would have looked Great!
