Also, what you talk about at 8:00 is something called pitching to contact. Sometimes pitchers who don’t have quite as high of velocity will focus on generating weak contact instead of swings and misses.

I love Foolish Baseball, and have been subscribed to him since before most anyone had heard of him. But I don't think many of his videos (including the one you've suggested) are particularly good for a complete newby trying to learn the game. Foolish Baseball's videos are created for baseball fans, providing interesting insights using advanced statistics. For someone who's just trying to learn the basic rules it's all going to go over his head. The actual game that the video you suggested is about is a good one, though. As you say, it has just about everything. Here's the KZbin video of the full game: kzbin.info/www/bejne/bIW7dKCGi7ecZtE (It's a very long game, though. The length of baseball games is highly variable, tending to be longer when more runs are scored, and this was before the new rules implemented this year to speed up the game.)

He got the strike zone slightly wrong. The strike zone is most commonly from the knees of the batter to just below the chest plate of the batter but he had the width correct. Some umpires are very strict though and won’t call it a strike above the waste. The strike zone is largely a judgement call by the umpire who has to see where the ball passes the batter and how close it is to the batter.

Fun tidbit. Eddie Gaedel played for the Detroit Tigers in the 1950s and was a little person standing 3 foot seven. He would pinch hit and the manager would instruct him not to swing. His strike zone was so small that pitchers were unable to hit the zone and would offer up 4 pitch walks

There are a few of the basic rules in this video that could be explained in better terms, as well a few that were not fully explained. For instance: *There should be more details about when a ball is fair and when it is foul, *there should be mention of a foul tip, which is the only time when a foul ball does count as strike three, and *there should be a brief explanation of when a runner does or does not need to be tagged out, which is directly related to whether or not a runner is required to advance to the next base.

Thought he did a pretty decent job of explaining. One of my favorite things about baseball is the strategy of pitching. Pitchers and catchers study the other team's roster. Each batter's strengths, weaknesses and tendencies while hitting. There's a constant chess match of ball placement and pitch type. He'll throw two balls high and outside in a row, then come low and inside to confuse the batter. They'll rotate in relief pitchers and closers to specifically thwart certain batters in the rotation or put a nail in the coffin. It's not as brutal and exciting as the NFL, but it is far more tactical and cerebral.

Excellent pick up on your part and the info is presented very well (though it would be helpful if he’d supplemented with actual footage.) Perhaps this had already been mentioned, but a couple of small points: - When someone is on/at a base, it is called “occupied”, not “full”. - The strike zone height is not knees-to-waist; it’s knees-to-armpit basically.

Here are some of my favorite baseball terms: 1. "Battery" - pitcher/catcher combination. Teams usually carry two catchers, usually because the constant squatting means they need more rest, but it's also done because some pitchers work better with second-string catchers than with first-string ones. Hall of Fame pitcher Greg Maddux is an example. The first-string catcher was named Javier Lopez, and the second-stringer was Eddie Perez. In this case, Maddux preferred Perez as his catcher because they had a better communication style, while Lopez would usually be the catcher for other pitchers. Knuckleball pitchers are usually like this as well - Tim Wakefield used the backup, Doug Mirabelli, as his personal catcher. As far as batterymates go, Adam Wainwright (pitcher) and Yadier Molina (catcher) worked 328 games together, which is the most in history, from 2007-22. 2. "Switch hitter" - a batter who hits both left-handed and right-handed. They bat left-handed against right-handed pitchers, and right-handed against left-handed pitchers. 3. "Yakker" - a curveball with a strong break. 4. "Fungo" - during pre-game practice, it's when a player or coach hits pop flies to the fielders. There is usually a special bat for this, with a longer length and lighter weight, but a smaller diameter. 5. "Full count" - when there are three balls and two strikes on the hitter (the "count"), because one more ball and he draws a walk, and one more strike and he's out. The pitch itself is called the "payoff pitch." 6. "Keystone sack" - second base.
@EricAKATheBelgianGuy
@EricAKATheBelgianGuy 3 ай бұрын
Here are other terms/interesting part to know: Wild pitch vs. passed ball - in both cases, the ball gets past the catcher. The biggest difference is whether it hits the ground first, or whether it hits the glove first. The general idea is that if it hits the ground first, it's a wild pitch, and seen as the pitcher's mistake; if it hits the glove first, it's a passed ball, and seen as the catcher's mistake. If there are runners on base, the ball is considered live and any runner can try to advance to the next base, including from third base to home plate. If there is nobody on base, and it's not ball four, then the ball is considered dead. If it is ball four, the batter is going to first base anyway. Technically, it's at the scorekeeper's discretion, but the general rule of thumb is what I described above. Under certain circumstances, you can also strike out and still reach first base. If you have a third strike, but the catcher drops the ball, then the ball is considered live and the batter must run.

Best way to learn baseball rules is current game highlights since the MLB added new rules this year. Such as pitchers only get 20 seconds to throw a pitch and batters can get called strike if they’re not paying attention in the batters box. Also teams now have official review challenge on umpires if the team thinks the umpire got the call wrong then be officially reviewed by video. (For baserunners NOT balls / strike calls) If the team wins such challenge they keep their challenge that game but if lost and called stands will not be able to challenge again that game.

In terms of what team to root for... That's really tough... I don't know teams over there to compare to. I will say the Pirates aren't very good, haven't been good for a while, and likely won't be good. They're a smaller market team so they can't spend a ton of money and they haven't been able to put draft picks together to make good runs. Loyal fans though. Some of the most Storied franchises in the sport would probably be the Yankees, Dodgers, and the Cardinals. You can probably throw a couple of East Coast Teams on there but those 3 are very old and very accomplished, historically. Lots of history for those clubs. Yankees and Dodgers are massive, MASSIVE markets so they tend to spend a lot of money (and thus earn the ire of other fanbases) and because they're located in New York and Los Angels (respectively) they get somewhat outsized representation on the national stage (again, annoying other teams' fans). The Cardinals, on the other hand, are mid-market but have been around a long time and are located in the middle of the country where, historically, there weren't as many teams so they accumulated a lot of fans, geographically because of lack of other options and large Radio reach (Braves are kinda like that too). Cardinals are hated because it is said they have the "Best Fans in Baseball" (BFIB) and the "Cardinal Way" which represents the "correct" way to play so obviously that irks other teams/fanbases as well. Being a fan of the first two will cause people to roll their eyes because you're just a "Bandwagon Fan" (I have no idea what a good comparison is... Being a fan of Manchester United? It's one of the few teams I know over there.) If you pick the Cardinals you won't get too much heat unless you start saying you're the Best Fan in Baseball. To go through the rest of the teams by division... Atlanta would probably be close to storied... They're very well respected and usually decent. Mets are the Yankees little brothers and they act like it but they usually field decent but underperforming teams. Phillies have some of the worst fans in baseball and they wear that as a badge of honor. The team has spent some money and could be good. Marlins... Just don't. Brewers are small-market and can never quite break out. Cubs won recently but can't decide if they're rebuilding yet. Loyal fans through decades of badness. Pirates, talked about them above. Reds have some decent history but are going to be bad for a while. Cardinals, already talked about them. Usually consistently good but don't spend a ton. Dodgers, talked about them. Padres, very up-and-coming, spending a lot of money. Energetic and exciting, just a matter of if they can actually win. Giants were good in the early 2010s but are in a bit of a rebuild. Solid fanbase. Rockies... Just don't. D-Backs, up and coming. Small market, so can't spend but they have a lot of young talent now so could make a run. Good underdog option. Yankees, talked about them. Red Sox, Yankees' main rival. One of the best rivalries in sports. Can't quite decide what they're doing right now. Orioles have a lot of young talent and may FINALLY be climbing out of their tanking phase. Blue Jays are the only Canadian team. Good young core, solid fans. Canada, you know? Rays, smaller market team that somehow always drafts insanely well. Very good team, somehow. White Sox, perpetually in rebuild. Thought they might make a run the last couple of years but bottomed out. Cubs' little brothers. Guardians, decent team. Good young talent. Mid Market. Twins. Small-to-mid market. Have some talent. Don't know if they'll be able to do much with it. Tigers. Just no. Royals, just no. Astros, very good team for the last decade, almost, and their fans will let you know. Had a cheating scandal which made them public enemy number one in all of baseball which made their fans dig in anymore. I don't blame them, they're just loud online. Very good team though. Rangers spent some money but don't know if they'll do anything with it. Astros are Texas' Team right now. Angels have two of the best players on the planet but always suck. It's depressing really. Mariners have some good young talent. A's, just no.

Your question about whether or not a pitcher can try to surprise the batter with a pitch opens an interesting can of worms. A pitcher is on a time limit now, they didn’t used to be (and I hate the pitch clock). There are two positions a pitcher can take before he throws: the windup and the stretch. In either position, at least one foot has to be in contact with “the rubber,” a white rubber rectangle at the top of the mound. Once his foot has made contact with the rubber and he brings his hands together he cannot put his hands down or feign any movement that does not end in a completed pitch. If he moves but doesn’t pitch, it’s called a “balk” and if there’s a runner on base, that runner is awarded a walk to the next base. The batter keeps batting, and the balls and strike count stays the same. There are a lot of different reasons a balk can be called but the most common is movement from the pitcher that doesn’t end in a completed pitch after he’s set to pitch with a foot on the rubber and his hands together. Once he’s set, he’s under no obligation to wait for the batter to be ready. But it would be really weird if the batter wasn’t in the batter’s box and waiting by the time the pitcher is set.

See you got it..... Pitching is a game of chess. A lot of people think theyre just aiming in the zone. They wont throw 1 pitch in the zone until you prove you wont swing at bad pitches. When you prove that, theyve already studied your whole career. They know exactly where to throw it to get you to either fly or ground out. Its when the pitcher misses that "barely a strike" on the corner and throws it too much in the middle of the square where homeruns happen. These guys are pros of pros. They will hit homeruns like crazy if you even just threw all strikes. You have to throw balls on purpose and mix it up. Even when hitting, people hit fouls balls on purpose. You really want to see as many pitches as possible, waiting for that 1 mistake like a pitch right down the middle in batting practice

Yep. And forcing the pitcher to throw more than 6 pitches to a batter during a single plate appearance is credited as a QAB. If a typical starter only has 100-125 pitches in him, forcing him to use a lot early can really help.

I found it funny when he was explaining the tag up. If the ball is hit to right field the runner on third will run home because there is no way the right fielder will be able to throw him out from that far away. I assure you, yes he can. It depends on the speed of the runner on third, the arm strength of the right fielder, how deep the ball was hit, and the accuracy of the throw, but it can be done and has been done many many times. I suggest watching the Best Throws in MLB history, it will illustrate the exceptional talent these players have.

The current hottest team in all of baseball is the Atlanta Braves. They have 8 players selected. Now, the pitcher as several kinds of pitches for instance a fast ball usually it's a very straight throw around 90 to 100 mph .He also has a curve ball in which the ball breaks left or right a slider is another breaking pitch. A change up looks like a fast ball but slightly slower to fool the batter. I hope this helps a little. A very enjoyable video.

You should watch the final game of the world baseball classic from march of this year. US vs Japan. It was supposedly the most watched baseball tournament game in history. I can tell this guy explaining doesn’t fully understand the game but he got most of it right. Used some weird terminology. The strike zone is between both sides of home plate and from the bottom of the knee to the top of the chest usually people say the letters because it’s where the letters are on your uniform. Also no one would say “first base is loaded”. You would just say runner on first. Loaded means there is a runner on every base and you would say “bases loaded”. Also a foul ball is a playable ball. You can catch a fly ball in foul territory and the batter is out.
@syx3s
@syx3s Жыл бұрын
one thing he gets wrong is that throwing the runner out at first (or any base) by the pitcher before the pitch, if the next base isn't occupied by another runner the baseman has to tag the runner to get the out because there is no forced out. that also is true after the ball has been hit and the runners are trying to advance to the next base. adds some algebra for the runners because depending on where the ball is hit and where any other runners might be on base the correct decision for them to try to advance or quickly return to their base will be very different.

Honestly, for the games you should watch - just pick any couple random games. And then finish with the greatest pitcher’s duel (a game where both pitchers play 8+ innings and give up 1 run or fewer each is called a pitcher’s duel) of all time - game 7 (final game) of the 1991 World Series between the Minnesota Twins and the Atlanta Braves. Featured an ultra-dependable veteran pitcher close to the end of his career (Jack Morris) and a young pitcher (rookie?) who would become an all-time great (John Smoltz).

Most but not all baseball fans support the team in their region of the country but you can support any team you want but once you pick a favorite you have to stick with them good or bad. Another way fan choose team is by finding a favorite (superstar) player and root for the team he currently plays for. It may or may not be the team closest to where you live but that's fine except it may be harder to go see that team in person. Once you understand the basic you can watch any baseball game it doesn't just have to be professional. You can watch MLB for the best players, college teams, or even Little League (11 & 12 year old kids). The Little League World series is televised every year and is an international event with teams from around the world, Some rules are different to protect the kids but the basics are the same. The current Major League season is about 1/4 completed you probably have to sign up for a service to see live game. Most MLB are late afternoon in the US (around 6-7 pm local time) so I don't know what time that would be for you. KZbin will have a lot of highlights of game but no full contest. Full games will expose you to all the crazy things that can happen in a game but can also be very routine and dull depending on how you enjoy things. You can have a shoot out where both team are scoring a lot (5+ runs) or a pitching duel where neither team has many hits (less than 5 hit for both teams). Each can be exciting in their own way. For example a game with a lot of home runs and hits is exciting because there is a lot of action. Conversely on the pitching side when a pitcher can prevent the other team from getting a single hit (call a no-hitter) it is super intense. Only to be outdone if a pitcher also does not allow a single batter to reach base, no walks and no-hits and no hit-by-pitch, this is called a "perfect game" a very rare feat in the history of the game.

It’s hard for a newbie to get into a team that loses a lot, so given that the Braves are doing really well now, and likely going to get better over the next few years, it’s a perfect team for a new fan to start out rooting for even if they switch to someone else down the road which I hope they don’t.

I would highly recommend watching a triple play compilation and something called "The Unforgettable Inning" it is a 1/2 hour long inning which was inning 7 of game 5 between the Rangers and Blue Jays. Also those are my 2 favorite teams so I was a mess. Lol.

Batter, not "bat person"! Thats funny.. Good video for those that dont understand the game, but that struck me funny. Baseball is a game you have to grow up with to fully understand it. I played it as a kid. I don't understand hockey for example, or soccer. I get the basic idea, but it's basic. Once you understand the game(s) it/they become less confusing and more fun to watch. I never realized how much you really need to know about baseball since i grew up with the game. Had i not i'd be confused too!

The difference between a fair and foul ball is fairly simple. 1. A batted ball that *settles* in foul territory between home plate and first, or home plate and third, is foul. This might include a ground ball that dribbles up the foul line and stops in foul territory before it reaches the bag. If it dribbles back into fair territory before it reaches the first or third base bag, or if it touches first or third base, it's fair. 2. A batted ball that *bounces* on or over foul territory and goes *past* the bag is also foul. This happens often when a hitter is fouling away pitches. 3. A batted ball that flies beyond the first-base or third-base bag and lands foul is always foul, regardless where the ball settles (stops moving). 4. Lastly, a batted ball that, while in foul territory, touches an umpire, a player, or any other object not part of the ground, is foul. This means a player (on either team) can't take a little dribbling ground ball in foul territory and kick it over the line to make it "fair" - the moment he touches it, it becomes a foul ball. (You'll sometimes see clips of the catcher following a ground ball up the baseline, waiting to see if it is fair or foul.) It also means a hitter can't make a ball hit something in foul territory and carom it back into fair territory. This rule would also include when the ball hits a protective fence, a guywire holding up a speaker, or some part of the dugout. It does *not* include the yellow foul poles in the outfield, or the third or first base bags themselves, which are considered "fair territory" by definition. 5. Some fields have special rules about foul balls when there are obstacles in the field of play (like a camera platform hanging high over the field). These rules also mean a ball can land in the outfield in fair territory, then *roll* into foul territory. As you noted, a ball can curve in flight, and this does sometimes happen - a hitter will stroke the ball right down the line fair, it first lands fair, and the ball bounces foul. It is still considered a fair ball, because it went past the infield and touched the ground in fair territory first.

To answer your question about the foul ball hit in the field of play and then curved out to foul territory. You would be correct ASSUMING it was in the air the whole time and landed in foul territory. If it hit the ground in fair territory and then went into foul territory, it's still a fair ball.

Runners can try to steal any time, but if the pitcher anticipates it and throws to first, the runner needs to run back to first base before the ball gets there. If he doesn't return to first base and instead tries to keep running to second base, he has almost no chance because he'll be caught between fielders at first and second base who can throw a lot faster than he can run. When a pitcher tries to get a potential base stealer out by throwing to a base instead of throwing to the catcher, that's called a pickoff attempt.

It's a long one, but one of the best games I've ever watched is the 2014 American League Wild Card Game. It was the first playoff game the Kansas City Royals had played in like 30 years, and it was a win-or-go-home game played in front of their home crowd. Lots of exciting moments late in the game. (Also the whole thing is on KZbin: kzbin.info/www/bejne/h6DZhYqlbbmllbs)

Welcome to trying to figure this game out. There are all kinds of videos to give you better working knowledge of what's going on. Like types of pitches, grips on the ball to throw these pitches, and blunders where people have made mistakes. You can see injuries from throwing or hitting. There are a ton of videos. And more than 100 years of movies. Ken Burns documentary covers the history. Good luck! Oh, I heard you ask about if the ball hits on the ground and bounces over the wall. Not a home run. It's called a ground rule double, and the batter is awarded second base, and everyone on base advances two bases. This, as often as not, costs the batting team runs due to the limitations of the two base advancement. Nice guess by you on that call. However, if the ball bounces off outfielder and over the wall, it is a homerun. This happens more than you might expect. All videos that show that are quite interesting. If I miss a game that i want to see, I just watch KZbin highlights. Just type in the team you want and see if they're there.

If the ball is inside the foul line when it gets to the first base, or third base, and then goes outside the foul line it is a fair ball. So, the ball can be in the foul area and be called fair.

I'm from Japan but we had an interesting urban legend: if a batter hit 34 foul balls in a row, he is out. No one's ever tried it since it's just about impossible to hit 34 consecutive fouls, but I never did find out whether that 34 foul ball rule is true or not.

Baseball is a sport from the 19th century. Prior to the industrial period in America. Thus NO clock. American football and basketball both use a clock..AND lots of rules.... I agree in that you should watch as much baseball as you can. Piece by piece, step by step you will learn the sport. And ask questions IF you are uncertain.. Take you time and enjoy.....

A foul ball is determined by where it crosses in the infield, unless it's a home run ball, in which case there are tall yellow poles at all stadiums that it must land inside of to be a home run.

Once again, let me make this clear. The strike zone is between the knees and just below the letters on the uniform. If the batter is hit by a ball while batting, it is a bean ball. Which results in the batter taking first base.

22 yards/66 feet wicket to wicket in cricket, 60.5 feet pitching rubber to home plate in baseball. The pitching rubber is a thick slab of rubber that pitchers use to push off of with their back (arm side) leg. Unlike cricket bowlers who jump up before they take the stride to bowl, pitchers are more drop and drive, getting their lower body low to the ground and their front leg stretched closer to the batter.

so for foul or fair balls. if the ball lands in foul territory it is a foul ball. if the ball rolls into foul territory after landing in fair territory its depends on if the ball crosses the line before or after first or thirst base. if it goes foul before the base it is a foul ball. if it goes rolls foul after landing in fair territory and it crosses the base then its a fair ball. there are umpires that watch the lines so they will make the call on the spot and your know.

The "foul ball counts as strike" is technically incorrect as well. With a two-strike count, an attempted bunt that results in a foul ball IS counted as a strike and the batter would be considered an out.
@hifijohn
@hifijohn Жыл бұрын
plenty wrong here you don't call homeplate a base its batter not batsman the strike zone is the width of home plate between just below the batter's knee to halfway between the batter's belt and armpits/shoulder as the batter is ready to swing. there are many ways to get to first base. you would never say the first base is loaded you would say runner at/on first a runner has to stay within a few feet of the lines between the bases.if he doesn't he is out automatically.

@Gracie Lynn His English was perfect but I don’t understand what his accent has to do with my previous comment. I was just saying that the video wasn’t as helpful as other videos are. From the wrong terminology to drawn out explanations, ie: ‘Team with the most runs, wins the “match”.’ It’s a ball game, not a match and the winner of most competitions has more (runs, points, scorings) than the opponent. His accent wasn’t the reason for my criticism. I did enjoy watching the reaction though.

A good video but some terminology incorrect. It is "Batter" not "Batsman". Also, with a hit, a batter must touch first, but, if there is the opportunity, he can advance to the next base.

@psychorabbitt
@psychorabbitt Жыл бұрын
Also - the guy in this video keeps calling it a "match." Literally nobody calls it a match - it's a game. And the only time "loaded" would be used would be if there's a runner occupying all three bases; in that it would be called "bases loaded." Otherwise it would just be "runner on second" or "runners on second and third." If there's runners on both first and third base it's called "runners at the corners" because first and third are the corners of the infield. And runners on second and third base are considered to be in "scoring position" because from those bases it's usually fairly easy to run to home on a ball hit into the outfield.
@kyndread71

Foul line. If the batter hits the ball, it bounces in fair but then rolls out foul.... it depends where it rolls. If it rolls out foul BEFORE the first or third base, then it is a FOUL BALL. If it bounces in fair and continues fair PAST the base, but rolls out foul in the outfield, it is a FAIR BALL.
