Our house needed a dedicated Theater Room, so I built one. This video shows the 3-1/2 months spent designing and building this room, from start to completion. With the help of my Wife, we were able to do the whole project ourselves, with the exception of the drywall and carpet install.
This room is designed and built to be isolated from the rest of the house. The ceiling utilizes isolation mounts so the floor joists above the room don't transfer sound. The studs in the wall are staggered and offset so that the wall in the Theater Room is not mounted to the stud that the exterior wall is mounted to.
The room is wired for 9.2.4, but it is currently setup as 7.2.
Room:
Projector = Panasonic PT-AE8000U
Screen = SeymourAV F100, 2.35:1, Center Stage UF (accoustically transparent)
Center = Klipsch RC-64
Front = Klipsch RF-35
Side = Klipsch RCW-3
Rear = Klipsch R-2650-W
Sub = Klipsch RW-12d (x2)
Front Row = Stanton Model 830 Reclining Chairs
2nd Row = Actual Theater Chairs (model?)
Rack:
Receiver = Onkyo TX-NR809
Amp = Emotiva XPA-5
Theater PC = custom build
Backup = Synology RS814
Gaming = Xbox and PS3
Bluray = PS3
I'm happy to answer any questions you have about this room or how to get you started down a similar path to your own custom Theater Room.

Awesome, sounds like you'll have a few more feet in each direction than my room, which would be awesome to have. Inspiration to work harder is great to have, just don't get in a rush near the finish line. I cut a few corners towards the end because I just wanted to be done, and I notice those short cuts all the time. They're subtle enough that no one else really sees them, but I know they're there and it eats me up. :)

I like your carpet choice and the subtle but effective use of the black wood bullnose at the step down between the two rows of seats. I was thinking my platform riser would be all carpet wrapped around the edge like how you see on most carpeted stairs. But now I’m thinking maybe I want the leading edge to be trimmed in wood bullnose stained black with carpet only on the top and sides but not wrapping around the edge. This way there is some indication of the step even with the lights off.

That's an amazing, clean build, nice job!! My living room doubles as a home theatre so have to keep it "wife friendly". I've still managed to get a discreet 5.2.4 system with a 65" 4k Sony and a 119" 16:9 screen that drops out of the ceiling and disappears into a bulk head, completely out of sight when not in use. My next home will be detached and will defo have a dedicated home theatre... with or without the wife 🤣

That’s a very tall center speaker, what brand of speakers did you use? 2) Your side and rears, are they sitting on a shelf inside the columns? 3) How many pairs of atmos speakers did you use? 4) Why did you need to build a 2-step stage? 5) The rectangle panels going across the bottom of the screen platform are they just for decoration? It looks like you had 6 or so outlets inside of them, what for? Thanks and hope you and your family enjoy!

Thanks! Be sure to check out my other videos on my Theater room, and I've got a 4th one coming out today. 1) Klipsch, around the room, center is tall because it's on its side (RC-64), check out vertical center channel placement. 2) Sides and rears in their own custom speaker cabinets, side inside the columns. 3) None yet, wired for 4 of them. If fully decked out, the room would be 9.2.4 4) Purely aesthetics, I wanted a stage of some sort, did my best to design a stage that fit the dimensions, but it has no real value other than looks. :) 5) They do open, but they're just for show. I need to finish them by installing the magnetic clips so the stay closed, maybe I can make a video about that? Thanks for the questions, keep them coming!! :)

You'll find there are several portions of your build that can be done on a budget, especially things that no one will know or see. This doesn't mean you're taking a short cut, but as you work through your project, you'll find areas that are critical and areas that aren't. In the end I see my mistakes and "should have/could have" kinds of things, but nobody else does. I'm my strictest critic for this room, and I feel it checks every box for what I wanted with my limitations. Plus, if there's something you want to do differently, it'll give you something down the road to tweak if you like those sorts of things. :)

Nice job 👏🏽, your home theater look amazing, I have a question my room is 12x20 I want to place a 3 row recliner as well but ir seems that if I set it up on the center I won't have much room on the sides to walk but also if i feel that if I place it toward the right like you did it wont be center with the screen . How does it look the way you got it set up ?? It actually the way I want to go but I want to know your experiences with that?
@AndyKruseChannel
@AndyKruseChannel 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Offsetting the front row was my only option if I wanted 3 seats. My room is skinnier than yours, so you might be able to get away with centering the seats. In my room, the seat closest to the wall is manageable, but I never sit there. You don't need as much space between for the aisles as you might think. Even if someone had to turn sideways for two steps to get to the front row, it might be worth it so that one person isn't sitting next to the wall like my 3rd seat. People will quickly forget not having a wide aisle to walk down as they get to their seat once they're in their seat. From then on it's all about the movie and the experience. Center them if you can, but offsetting them like mine is not the end of the world. This room probably matters more to you than other people, as long as you don't spend your time in that 3rd seat, you'll be fine. :)

Thanks for the compliment! The screen is 108.7" diag, and I might have gone a touch smaller so the stage could have been built a little differently. I feel like the front row cannot be any closer to the screen or one might experience fatigue. That being said, my screen is about 18 inches in front of the front wall (since the speakers are behind it). Question for you, I have a similar build going on in a brick built garage. Is it not worth doing staggered studs on the brick walls? Am I best to just Batten directly to the wall, insulate them two layers of drywall as you did?
@AndyKruseChannel
@AndyKruseChannel 3 жыл бұрын
That brick is a decent isolator for sound, and if the garage is attached to the house, you could do it on that wall. The offset studs I used were to de-couple the interior theater room wall from the existing wall in the basement. For you application, if you had the space, offsetting the studs for this wall from the house or garage wall would provide the same result, by not allowing the sound transfer through the wall. Offsetting the studs by an inch would be plenty and it would go a long way to decouple the room from the house. The remaining walls are less of an issue as those walls would not contribute to the sound transfer to the house. However, if it's in the budget, you could do the same offsetting to those wall, and by framing it in, it will give you a place to add insulation to keep the room from getting hot or cold depending your yearly climate. :)
@Stevo19801
@Stevo19801 3 жыл бұрын
@@AndyKruseChannel it’s a detached garage from me and my neighbours. Single course of bricks on 3 walls and a up and over door opening. I will be doing a staggered stud behind the up and over door sealing that end. My width is only 10 feet 9 inches so don’t want to lose any extra width of the room if not necessary, I listen at around -15db. So I see my options are 2” studs screwed directly to the brick, 2” insulation inbetween with 2 layers of dry wall, or 4” studs 2” away from the wall with insulation and 2 layers of dry wall.
@AndyKruseChannel
@AndyKruseChannel 3 жыл бұрын
@@Stevo19801 I hear you on the width dilemma, I was facing the same issue. The insulation in between your studs will do little to isolate the sound in the room or sound coming from outside the room in your setup. That's because of the density of the insulation. I would only add it if you are looking for more of a climate control option. The dual layers of drywall will do more for sound isolation than insulation could ever dream of doing. This is due to the density of the drywall. However, behind my screen is a 3 inch layer of batting, that is meant to dampen low frequencies, so if you were to put that in between the studs in place of standard fiber glass insulation (the pink stuff), then it may offer a little bit of sound isolation. Also, for something to think about, I did OSB and then a layer of drywall because this gives me an option of near infinite surface mounting options. Meaning, if I had two layers of drywall then anything I mount to it will be screwed to drywall material which is not ideal for securing the mount. However, with the OSB, anything mounted to the wall gets screwed directly to wood and is a much more secure mounting option. The dual layer drywall would have been better for sound isolation, but I was willing to take that fractional hit in dB reduction to provide the mounting options. :)

@AndyKruseChannel 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks! We all have to start somewhere, this is my third room. My first room was a bedroom with a TV and some speakers. The second room was a little more dedicated with a projector and theater-style couch things. This is the third room and I had a blank canvas so it was easier to go full tilt and make it a dedicated room. I've been building things and trying my hand at new skills for over 30 years, eventually you start to retain enough skills to make a mess in your basement. :) Sitting up, my eyes are roughly 9 feet from the screen, and around 10 feet when reclined. Room dimensions started around 11ft x 22ft and finished around 10ft x 17ft. Keep in mind the length is much shorter because of the stage depth and the speakers are behind the screen. The room is closer to 21ft long, but the stage makes a few feet of length not really useable, that's why I claimed the smaller length. Stick around and check out the other Theater Room videos I made and possibly the other home construction projects I have done. :)

@AndyKruseChannel

@@flyers10az I'd advise a smaller screen at that distance. My screen is roughly a 1:1 ratio of size to viewing distance and it's pushing the envelope of "eye fatigue" during some movies. When the screen is too big and/or too close, your eyes move all over the screen during lots of action and it can cause your eyes to get tired because of all the work they're putting in. Screen size can bring some bragging rights, but at the end of the movie it would be better to want to watch another one vs going and doing something else because your eyes are tired. :) I believe something around 1:1.3 size to viewing distance is ideal, but I can't remember where I read that. Good luck on your new build!

Looks great. You have motivated me to attempt to building my own theater in my basement. Would you mind sharing what size lumber you used to frame the soffits? it looks like 2 x 1 x 8?
@AndyKruseChannel
@AndyKruseChannel 3 жыл бұрын
That's great to hear, good luck with the build! Yes, I used 1x2 for the framing of the soffits. For me the space was limited so I needed to use something small, but since it's not load bearing or structural, it was sufficient for this build. Then, add that full layer of OSB sheeting and it slightly added some strength to the soffits (vs just using drywall) which may help to keep its shape over time.

Good point, I didn't have the room to put the same seats in the 2nd row. I would have loved to do that. If I had 1-2 feet more length to the room I could have made it work.

Thank you! You seem like a handy/creative person so curious on your opinion, do you think building a separate ceiling with ceiling joists supported by the top plates of the walls would work well? The only weight it would need to support is the drywall. Like if you have 2x10 floor joists above, use 2x8s in between them that are exposed like an inch or two? completely decoupled and looking at the price of clips and channels I think this might be cheaper, thoughts??@@AndyKruseChannel
@AndyKruseChannel
@AndyKruseChannel Жыл бұрын
Yes and no. You're correct to want to decouple the Theater Room from the rest of the house as much as possible, but there is a point of diminishing returns. Without knowing the dimensions of the room, those 2x8s you mentioned not only need to support the drywall, but their own weight, which compounds as the longer they need to be to span the room. To find out how tall those boards need to be (the 8 part of 2x8) can be found using the Moment of Inertia formula, meaning you might be able to do it with 2x6 or 2x4 boards, or maybe you'll need to go the other way and put in 2x10 boards. The offset of these boards from your floor joists doesn't need to be an inch or two down, it can be 1/4 or 1/2 inch, just enough so any flexing of the floor above doesn't touch your ceiling in the Theater Room. :)

Awesome. Getting ready to start mine. Do you have a KZbin video on tips or things to avoid. Approx cost. Why OSB instead of two layers of drywall
@AndyKruseChannel
@AndyKruseChannel 3 жыл бұрын
A video on tips or things to avoid is a great idea, thanks! I'm about $14k into the room, but I already had most of the audio gear. OSB provides a mounting surface anywhere in the room. If I want to attach anything to the walls, I would either need to find a stud or use special drywall anchors. With the OSB layer everywhere is a "stud", per se. Check out my Tour video, I give a few more details there. Also, I've got another Theater video coming out tomorrow afternoon!!

Couple of questions for you, hope you won't mind answering. I believe you used MDF for the Wainscoting base, what was it's height? How did you put black fabric over the column speaker opening?
@AndyKruseChannel
@AndyKruseChannel 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, I used MDF and it is about 34" high. For the speaker grills, I made a "frame" that fits inside the opening and attached the fabric to the back side with staples. It's somewhat delicate as the framing is small due to the limited space in each speaker tower. But that's ok because nobody ever touches it. :)

what are the dimensions of the room?
@AndyKruseChannel
@AndyKruseChannel 3 жыл бұрын
The room started out as 11ft wide, but only 10ft - 4in when complete. The length of the finished room was 17ft, this is from the back wall where the window is located to the wall behind the screen. The overall room length is longer because of the HVAC and water heater, but I figured people don't care about that space since it's not included in the Theater.

That’s a very impressive room , well done , I have question regarding the baffle box at the back ? Where did you get the idea , and does it work as you thought
@AndyKruseChannel
@AndyKruseChannel 3 жыл бұрын
I was emulating a room design off the AVS Forum, some guy in Minnesota (i think). He built a similar box to feed the HVAC to his room. I thought I could use it to allow the air to get out so the room would not get pressurized when the heater was on. Also, since the furnace is on the other side of the Screen wall, I didn't want to hear it. Yes it works, as far as I can tell there is zero sound coming from the furnace when it's on.

Nice job! How far out does your stage come out? Also if you don’t mind me asking, how much $ do you think you saved by doing some of this yourself?
@AndyKruseChannel
@AndyKruseChannel 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks!! The screen is about 18 inches from the wall (because the speakers are behind the screen), and then the edge of the stage is roughly 6 inches out from the screen, then about 5-6 inches out for each step. When you add it up it sounds like a massive use of space, but the stage is curved and meant to be less intrusive. I will put a video out soon explaining this better and showing how it works. :)

Before I started the room was 11ft wide, but was just over 10ft when finished. The length when finished is about 17ft, but the room is longer than that since the HVAC stuff is still there, roughly 22ft long before I started the project.

@AndyKruseChannel
@AndyKruseChannel 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks! The finished width was about 10ft 4in, and the length about 17ft. The room is actually longer, but the stage takes a few feet of depth away from "usable space", so that's why it's about 17ft long.

@@AndyKruseChannel What magnets did you use to attach your frames to the walls? That seems like a great solution.
@AndyKruseChannel
@AndyKruseChannel 3 жыл бұрын
@@the_original_jt Nothing fancy, they're generic magnets you can buy at the local Hardware Store or probably Walmart. They're shallow as they don't need to be super strong, the grills don't weigh much. Also, to reduce the strength, use a metal screw for the other end, because another magnet may be too strong of a connection. :)
