The table is pine and will yellow/orange over time. You could go two ways: if you stain it a bit gray, it will look like aged teak- like in many expensive gardens. You could stain it dark- ZAR makes good stains. They have a great midcentury colored Modern Walnut. They also have a darker walnut color. If you don’t cut the legs off, burying them could be a problem unless the legs are pressure treated lumber. I would give them a good coating of a marine varnish. You can just do the part that is getting buried. Speaking of marine varnish, if you want the table to withstand the elements, it’s a good choice! I can’t believe how perfectly that table fits! Love your channel. ❤

Yes was going to comment this, don’t bury the legs the wetness of the soil will rot them over time. The hardware store has this cap that is meant to go over fence post. Maybe if she put that on the legs she could bury it a bit without the wood being directly in contact with the soil

Frankly, I was inspired to both pickle some red onions and to finally purchase a decent sander (have a "mouse" sander that is ridiculously tiny). Most people are waiting for encouragement to 'just do it already,' so ignore the nitpickers picking their nits. Thanks for letting us watch you work and get inspired to try our own projects.

I do a lot of woodwork myself. Pro tip- don’t touch the raw sanded wood with your bare hands. You risk leaving handprint ghosts because of the oil in your skin, and these ghosts won’t show up until the end after you’re finished staining and put your finish coat down. Learn from my mistakes lol. Special walnut is a great mid tone wood stain color that is neither orangey nor has any trendy gray tones.
@sonjabutler250
@sonjabutler250 Жыл бұрын
I like that idea of walnut or maybe natural no gloss stain. Also, even though gray was so trendy, a watered down gray paint might be lasting(?) and would be fun with mismatched but one-color (a fun color) chairs (whenever she figures out the height). If in shade, black would be fun, but not if it will be in sun when she wants to use it (hot).

When you’re sanding, you go from the low grit number to the higher grit number. So start heavy duty to grind off the finish then a gentler higher grit to smooth out the finish. Natural pine turns to an ugly orange yellow, so you will need to stain to either neutralize that or go an actual colour you prefer. I think it would look great dark!

You get the wood wet after the first sanding to cause the grain to ‘pop’ up. The water gets into the freshly revealed wood fibers which causes them to swell up just a bit. This makes it easier to then sand to a smooth finish on the final round of sanding. Gorgeous fit for your backyard!!

I guess it depends on when you’d use the table the most. If you’re planning on gathering friends during an evening, then I would go for a nice moody dark stain. It would contrast nicely with the fence. You could always go bold and add darker stain every other board on your fence to tie it in…I just think dark would take it up a notch from pine “picnic table” vibe to groovy “hangout with friends” vibe. Candlelight, vintage table runner…wine?😏

I would wear a dust mask when sanding, and an apron also, as the dust will get all over yr clothes. Instead of wet wiping I would vacuum the dust with a soft attachment so as not to leave plastic marks from the vac. Start with the 80 then do the 120. But since it is a soft wood, maybe starting with 120 then going to 220 would be better as soft woods tend to leave marks from the sanding. After sanding is complete, vac again and go over with a tack cloth-a sticky cheesecloth u can get at any paint store. Wipe then unfold, wipe again, unfold, etc until done. Dust will have accumulated in the space between the boards so be sure to get that. Dust is considered the enemy of a good finish generally. Sinking the legs means they will rot and pretty quickly, maybe 2 years. Also the end grain acts as a capilliary to soak up more moisture than the top grain. Sinking could be a prob also if you want to move the table for a party and then you have holes ppl could trip in. One person suggested marine varnish but I wonder if applying tar to the bottom of the legs would be better. I happened upon a nice finish once by applying a stain sealer on pine then sanding. The hard part of the grain went natural whereas the soft parts stayed white, but overall gave the wood a nice look was warm and easy-but ya gotta sand!! I could go on but I'll stop here cuz you are getting lots of good feedback. Loved the vid!!

Cut the legs if they're too long, but don't bury. If you can find 4 small ceramic tiles, it would be nice to put them under the legs for more stability and it would help preventing from humidity going into the wood. Two other things : For the table, I would go with a similar shade than the fence behind. I feel it would make an easy choice to make it more cohesive and natural. This brown compliments the AMAZING green wall of ivy really well. With a bench on the fence side and black metal chairs around, I feel it'd give an elevated yet simple look to the space. I also would highly recommend using both a conditioner for your wood before staining it (to limit the contrast between the wood and the veins, which makes it way better looking) and after having the table stained and cured, you should give it a coat or two of spray can shellac to make it resistant to stains and weather (at least on the top and sides of two top planks)

I’m happy enough to watch you sand a table! If it was my little space I’d start by painting the fencing black, I’d stain the table a dark walnut colour and add some posts to the bottom of the legs to avoid damp damage (or just use marine varnish as suggested by some clever viewers here). I’d use two benches either side that could be tucked under when not in use and cover them with cushions for comfort when you have visitors. Some festoon lights overhead, add candles and lots of alcohol, swing an invite my way and shebang, party in motion 🎉

Love it! Personally I would go for a colorless stain or one with a *slight* white pigment in it (sometimes the natural oils brings out the warmth, hit or miss depending on what you want). Would also consider how much sunlight the table gets as it will lighten it. So if you go for a darker tone I would personally only go for a neutral stain, not too warm.

You could go dark or light depending on the mood you're trying to create. Since the wood leans toward orange, you could do a 50/50 mix of white paint and water, brush on the table then wipe off. The white stain will tone down the orange but still let the wood grain show through.

It will be so cute, if you will put some painting on the wall outside, near to the new table (just on some nail, so you can take it off easy)

The top of the table should be about 30" off the ground, and I'd go for a very dark brown stain. I'm feeling vintage, european, outdoor dinner party vibes.

The natural colour is good but you should seal it to protect it - the only issue is as soon as you apply a clear sealant it’ll go the same colour as when it is wet (aka orange) so I would stain it. There is a stain colour called ‘early American’ and its really nice

Hi Paige, I think the table looks great in that space! I would personally go for a natural stain AND I would sand and stain the wood fence in the same way (if your landlord greenlights that for you)

Wait until you know what seating you'll have for the table to that you can choose the best color to go with them! Unless you don't think it matters!

I used ebony stain on a vintage bed frame and I freaking love it! It's black but still shows the wood grain. BTW I am obsessed with those chairs in your living room.

natural wood for sure!! the beautiful thing about wood in outside spaces is that it will age and change, a few years from now you will be able to see maybe a lighter spot where you always sit and drink your morning coffee because the sun hasnt reached that small part of the wood as much as everything else. and for seating i would look into HAY pallissade for contrast, especially the bench against the bush (if outside the budget IKEA and HAY made a similar collab a few years ago). and i would also ask the landlord if its possible to get the fence repainted, looks like it needs a new coat. love the space!!

I would do a weathered gray stain. I think it would look great in your outdoor space.
