Powertech PT6500W genarator unboxing, setup and first use

I am just sharing my first experience about this Generator.

This type of generator is a real fun machine that is sold under many names. The generator was designed to be three-phase, for operation with three-phase motors, which have an even load distribution on all three phases. And then a resourceful salesman gave him three Schuko sockets so that he could sell this generator much better. What some people like to overlook or ignore: The specification of three "kW" (in the operating instructions it says 2.5kW peak load and 2.0kW continuous load) only applies if all three phases are loaded equally. This generator simply cannot produce three or even two kW on just one phase, e.g. for a tired kettle. But what is kept secret is that although this generator has three phases, only one phase is measured internally in order to control the excitation coil, which affects all three phases. This is ok when operating as a pure three-phase supplier. But there is an expensive catch. A customer commissioned an electrician to install a three-pole changeover switch in his house distribution. He didn't tell him which generator he wanted to connect and the electrician didn't ask. The generator was started, the transfer switch was activated and chaos was complete. There was high consumption during the regulated phase, probably two refrigerators that wanted to start and needed a lot of electricity to do so. The other two phases contained high-quality electronic devices, TVs, computers, various office equipment, etc. Due to the extreme unbalanced load, the voltage on these lightly loaded phases rose to well over 400 volts and destroyed a whole series of devices. The damage was several thousand euros. With something like that, you can only grab it!

Spot on! I've got one of these generators which I use for power cuts. When it was new, I noticed that all 3 of the 220V sockets had been wired to one phase. I re-wired the generator so each 220V connector is fed by one phase. I just make sure that the total load is shared as evenly as possible across the 3 phases. Good point about only one phase being monitored by the AVR to set the rotor current and therefore the output for all 3 phases. It's a great little generator if you know how to use it. Just a little basic physics. The engine is 6.5HP (though some models have a "chinese upgrade" where they simply apply an 11Hp sticker on top). The point is, assuming 100% perfect efficiency of the alternator, then each HP can generate approx 740 Watts of power. 6.5 * 740 = 4810W. In truth, small alternator efficiency is likely to be about 65% at best - so that drops the REAL output power to around 3125 Watts. Still a very useful generator indeed, but anyone thinking this might generate 6,500W is going to be very disappointed. If you use it once in a while for an hour or two at a time, it will probably serve you very well. If you want to power anything above around 3KW total load, voltage will lag and frequency will decrease. Also, regardless of what the manual might say, these generators are NOT reliable for long term use (eg: living off grid with solar during day and genset when battery reserves run low) Keep on top of the oil change too, high revving gensets will benefit from having the oil changed a little more often that the manual suggests. These models have no oil filter IIRC - so anything nasty in the oil just carried on grinding away until you remove it. A magnet on the end of the dipstick is not a bad idea if you can find a way to fasten it - and consider changing the oil every 25 hours or so runtime. Your FIRST ever oil change should ABSOLUTELY be 25 hours at the absolute max. A high revving unit like this might benefit from it's first change after just 10 hours. If you remove oild when still fairly warm and run it through a coffee filter (will take a while), you might be astonished at what you find.

I have a clone of this generator. But avr is missing. On front you see 3phase red socket. But on alternator you don't have all connectors for a proper 3phase AVR (with 8wires) plus. Avr you can put is 100mm wide. And AVR for 6kw are 145mm wide. So it's totally 3kw max. And probably no 3phases... :(

Great Video buddy. I bought one of these myself yesterday....I wasnt looking for one, it was from a man in a van.... (dont ask)...!! It was €250 a bit more expensive that yours but its the same generator, it is just a different "brand" and to be honest I had thought that I would sell it on but there seems to be a lot of them for sale about the place. So I was a bit depressed about it to be honest Until I seen your Video which has shown me not only how to operate one but to actually appreciate it and its capabilities. As I live in a house on its own land and have a lot of trees on it and a lot of maintenance to do with it I have always had to use / buy petrol machines as electric plug in machines were too far away from the power source but this video shows me how to use a generator and how I can use it with electric devices out in my garden. It can also be used to back up the fridge freezer or fridge if the electricity goes in the house. Thanks again for posting and showing me what a great addition it will be to me.

Hey I am car detailer, I have a 50L air compressor 6.5A 1600W, a MICHELIN pressure washor 1600W too and a dexter vacuum cleaner 20L, will it be okay if I use this generator for those types of work?

Hi, no this cheap generator isn't capable for this heavy jobs for sure. The power and current rating is fake, a compressor also starts with an huge starting current and the safety fuses don't like that. I recommend a A brand like Honda or something. Cheers

I had the same issue a while ago, the fact it's running for some seconds means the ignition ect is working good, it will be e petrol /gasoline problem. My tank needed more petrol and sinds then it runs perfectly. Can you check the patrol is coming out of the hose that leads to the engine? Otherwise contact the seller please. Good luck!

The noise level is really only noticeable when running the AC and other appliances like the microwave, hair dryer, or coffee pot. It’s not huge like other ones and it has wheels so even at 90lbs, I can move it!

My guess and honest opinion I think NOT. The power rating if this generator isn't like the details on the box and advertisement. One will work but be aware of this type of generator, it isn't an inverter type, so the equipment you connect can't be electronics like LED lights, computers ect. A simple fridge will work but one with a digital temperature control can be damaged because the power out of this generator isn't exactly 230V. The power fluctuate between a certain numbers and a lot of electrical equipment doesn't like that for sure. A drill, glow light bulb ect will work fine. Hopefully you have the information you asked for. Cheers

Put a wire into the ground. Ideally push a metal rod into the ground and connect. It will short via that rather than you etc

Does the meter show anything - even if nothing is coming out? Assuming breakers are on and still no output power, then AT YOUR OWN RISK, try this. Plug in a standard electric drill, make sure generator is running and breaker on. Wear gloves. DO NOT SKIP THAT BIT ^^ Hold trigger of drill and then with other hand, give a cautious "spin" of the chuck. What can happen sometimes on these units, is that there is ZERO residual magnetism in the alternator and so it cannot start to generate power. The "drill trick" applied a small voltage back feeding into the alternator when you rotate the drill by hand. This can (and often does), provide enough voltage to excite the alternator - which will then ramp up voltage VERY quickly - the drill will go from being dead to spinning at full speed. Hence the gloves. This fix will last indefinitely but if the generator is not used for years, it might need doing again. Why the 12v output carries on working usually I am not sure. If this doesn't immediately work, then try spinning the drill the other way (or same way but slide over the "fwd / rev" switch) There are other ways too (flashing battery over the leads) but the drill-method is often the simplest and least likely for someone to mess up. ** EDIT ** Try NOT to leave a generator running with no load (or VERY light load) for long and disconnect the load before powering down. Leaving a load on as you shut down can sometimes help to remove the residual magnetism and you need to get the drill out again.

No, these fake machines peak a 1.8 Kw before you loose frequency and have a volts drop, they are useless for inductive loads of any description.

this generator is just bullshit. 6500W is the addition of motor power and electric power. Moreover, power factor is about 0.8 on it and finally the power on 230v comes from one plug. Expect about 650w real power on 230v plug, 2kva on 400v plug.
