Good job. My daughter works at a commercial greenhouse and this is exactly what they do in warmer weather. I would suggest you roll your plastic the other way, toward the inside, so it doesn't catch and hold rain water. Dirt and algae will be a problem if the rolls of plastic are holding water.

A suggestion for your sides that you rolled up…..if you taped it to 3/4 inch pvc and then rolled it up, your shade cloth ropes would hold it up, your plastic siding would not get kinked, and would roll back down for the winter to be attached easily.

Great video!! I would recommend coating your bottom/foundation wood with an anti-termite coating so that you won't be losing the groundwood structure from termites or wood rot.

Screen for ventilation and security is brilliant! I didn't want to put plastic down on the bottom because of my chickens and other burrowing animals. I knew they would want to get inside the greenhouse but we weren't exactly sure what we would put down instead. I'm probably going to do similar to you guys, so thank you!

You can use a pvc pipe in the bottom of the plastic to attach and roll up and down easy. You can make it heavier if needed and “click” in into special holders to keep in down

Love Love Love it, a friend is helping me with some Lumber she and her grandpa has it'll cut my cost down alot she also has barn vent the ones that draw out the hot air. My plane is tto put down fabric cloth and do raise beds also self wicking tubs is a plan too my ground is to much glay in it also be to hard on me to dig out and put in the compost plus so my wife doesn't have to bend over so much. Great video guys. The only thing I would suggest is now that you have base ventilated is that you move your fans up to the top of your hoop house, both blowing out. You will get rid of more heat during hot days. Your critters coming around to see whats going on and for pets is cute. I got a kick out of Joe picking up the little brown hen and setting her on the dirt pile.

Hydroponic veggies are suboptimal. They do not have the full spectrum of nutrients, especially nitric oxide, which is very essential. They also don't get the soil microbes, which the plants need. Lacking these things makes the plants enery very low.

Hello, just found your site and I'm from Maryland so i know how the weather has been this year , i like your hi- tunnel every much , will be building one once i to move further south but i have a suggestion for your sides how to roll them up or take them down is to use pvc pipe maybe you can use 1/2" pipe or bigger you'll need two 10' lengths with a sleeve in the middle to hold them together and two end caps to keep critters out and to keep the pipe up on both ends and the middle, take any extra pieces of the pipe cut it in half , cut them to size to hold up the ends and the middle ( you can screw those pieces on the end and the middle on both sides ) then when you want to close it once coller weather comes attach the extra half pieces of pipe on the bottom ( but turn those pieces the opposite way that you have them on top , do you get what i mean? I really like this add on idea to your hoop house. I am curious about how well it will hold up to winter/snow? I would think that it will shed snow fairly well but... The cow panels tied together and braced like you have them seems pretty stout. Nicely done folks, I appreciate watching you two work together, and having fun doing it. I have a similar hoop house. During the winter weather Texas had earlier this year mine didn't shed snow well at all. Mine isn't made from cattle panels but same shape. Got up first morning and there was a foot of snow on top. Had to clear the snow daily. An added ridgepole might help.

You should put a strip just like the one on top to the back but leave the inside where it will go around boards and make a good deal then in the summer all u have to do is roll it up to the top of your screen on the inside and hook the end in a paracord loop to keep it up

Do yourself a favor and use screw’s instead of nails when you will be removing wood and repositioning it. Eventually you will need to replace the plastic sheeting. Nice build. I really love this idea for a greenhouse.

The hoop house is awesome fast and dirty. But with the time you see all the shortcommings. A good building allways have a good foundation. To handle the water and the temprature, there is one good material: clay. So my recommendation would be to implement the front and the end of the hoop in a clay constructed wall. The roof should be as big as the foil is, and open the possibility to collect the water from the rain.

Oh my friend! This isn’t a permanent structure for us! We’re moving very soon, in about a year and a half. With the pandemic making supplies and wood sky rocket…we went with what we had on hand and could afford! So far so good…the hoop house is doing great and the plants are thriving! In the summer, how about just propping the door open? Doors on either end. You could roll up the bottom of the plastic, but that may not be as convenient or might cause the whole thing to get loose and wonky, if that's where it's attached. I might try attaching mine in two places so I could raise the bottom. Funny I wrote this before I watched much. Maybe you should batten the plastic to that top piece of wood so it doesn't just come off all the way. Then you can batten it to the bottom in the winter. But it won't unravel in the summer. I'm building something similar right now. And have been thinking about it for awhile / watching videos. I'm hoping I can just open a door on the bottom of one end and open a window on the top of the other and get enough ventilation that way. But I can also just open both doors (I'm imagining doors on both ends - possibly with a lower and upper half like a horse stall. And a window on one side that opens itself based on temperature for days when it needs to be closed some of the time. In the summer, I'll just disconnect that and leave it open. Good idea to get the bug protection. Interesting anyway - my brassica's just aren't viable in the summer. They work early spring and all winter (with some protection) and there's no bugs.

Hi thanks so much for your comment! I don't like to leave the door open because of the bugs and sometimes if our chickens are out there...they'll take full advantage haha! With the front screened door, the screened window in the back and the screened roll up sides...the ventilation was great! Plus the 2 fans circulating the air. We had a wonderful harvest this year. Wow picked up some great tips from your hoop house videos! I was wondering - the sides can roll down for winter... but do you cover the ventilation window and screen in the door in the winter? Gets a little cooler here where I live (NW Ohio)... so would need to be able to seal mine up at night in the late fall/early spring... hoping it will significantly extend our greens growing season! I do wish we could still buy the good old-fashioned wire screen, the long-lasting screens we used to have in our windows. The crap they sell now as "wire screen" is just cheap, and a waste of money. I'd rather add wire screen than fabric. I think I might build one of these this summer, if I can recruit some help.

you did mention keeping earth worms out they are one of the best things for your garden ,they take the matter down into the soil and in return leave castings all great for your plants,other wise great job,please tell Joe hammer have a longer handle that you hold at the end ,other wise they would be short , noticed he loves to choke his right behind the head ,just commenting easy mate to swing when held at the end and lay your thumb along the top more control old builder trick.

I never said earth worms. I was referring to tomato horn worms which we have in VA that kill entire crops. I’m aware of how good earth worm castings are for garden soil.😉

I don’t see why not. I know people in Alaska that use high tunnels and hoop houses just fine. Prob need an additional support beam down the center of the roof for added support for snow. 😊

I'm wondering if you build 3 framed screens & set them in the framing of the house with screws (not nails) Then if the screen got ripped you could remove the framed screen to repair just 1 of the framed screen. 🙏💉😷🌺 P.S. maybe instead of plastic screening use gal. metal screening???? Just asking. 🐔😊😊😊😊

How do you keep the plastic from ripping at the joint where it’s cut for the roll up side? I’ll be finishing up the greenhouse plastic tomorrow hopefully. I plan to attach the roll up side to a 4 inch board mounted length wise at 36 inches high. I will use a 3/4 inch EMT pipe with plastic clips to secure the plastic to the pipe. I can install baffles as well but am still concerned than it will separate at the cut site over time and use.

If I understand your question right, we just put like a 1x2 strip of wood across it to secure it & this prevented it from ripping or wearing in the future. Minute 3:50 of the video.😊

Hello! Plants that need pollination get planted in our outdoor garden. We only use the hoop house for veggies that don’t need pollinators.☺️

Looks like you're using Lowe's plastic. Poly, for poly tunnels is about the same price and lasts at least four years. It's tougher and UV treated and, most importantly, it lets more light through.
