I love my blackthorn- I have fields of it. People around me give me grief because of its thorn punctures car tyres and can give you septicaemia. Your video has lifted my heart- thankyou. The flowers are beautiful. I have an ancestor - she was burnt at the the stake- a full cycle- good prevails as you said.

Loved this! Learned so much, I’m trying to adapt the English hedgerow concept for my small suburban permaculture garden and I’m planning on planting the Native American plum on my border! Loved learning about blackthorn’s witchy history too

Thank you. Loved the ending. Love your kindness and thoughtfulness towards our fellow Earthlings. I have a blackthorn walking staff that I bought for my grandma in the 80's and she left it to me when she passed. I use it on walks all the time. Adding your channel to my fav's.

Really interesting video! We recently bought some land (we lived in Umbria, Italy) and it's completely overrun with spiky blackthorn. The tiny saplings spread everywhere by runners and are a nightmare when the kids want to run around. Good to hear about the fight between blackthorn and hawthorn though!!
@HomeEdMum3 жыл бұрын
Another brilliant video, thank you. We happened to find those berries by accident the other week - I thought they were gooseberries 🤣 regardless, I've frozen them and not done anything with them yet 🤔
@dawncunningham9273 жыл бұрын
Great video 👏 and really interesting about the blackthorn and the hawthorn, where I live there are blackthorn intertwined with hawthorn all amongst the hedgerows.
@eastanglian37783 жыл бұрын
Very nice:) I have a blackthorn staff and wand. In East Anglian (and I guess most witchcraft) lore the blackthorn rod is a "blasting rod" for directing malefica but is also defensive as well against malefica. Blackthorn staffs are heavy and this is why they make good self defence weapons. The Irish shillelagh is made of blackthorn for this reason. With regard to the sloe, I may be wrong but I think that in Ray Mears' Wild Food series that he did with Prof.Gordon Hillman the paleobotanist they found out that once the berry was bletted it was entirely edible as the sugars had been released. Maybe you have come across this? Ive yet to try myself!
@AlissaSss232 жыл бұрын
Sorry, what is bletted? I know they become edible after the first frost, some people forage them before and freeze them. Normally they are used for gin but they can be used in jams and preserves or syrups too
@nl40643 жыл бұрын
collect the berries, store one year and then sow for new plants = plant out in patches and ygrow to protect oak and other trees from deer and sheep

My sister had two spikes in her back, they were 4" long, she was getting ready for bed and I spotted two black marks on her back, she couldn't even feel them. I managed to get both of them out, God knows what would have happened if I hadn't spotted them.

what would need to be done or given if pricked and a hospital is not an option? Curious and will continue researching. mentioning in the Comment section in case anyone already knows the solution. Thank-you!
