Excellent video as usual. I was a bit creative with my shut off. I bought a regular electronic shut off and powered it with a Lutron switch. No power to the valve and it closes. Power to the valve and it opens. Native HomeKit control via Lutron. Walla! Plus no torque issues.

Sure. I installed this valve. It comes in many sizes for different pipes. It also comes as either normally open or normally closed. The normal state determines if the valve is open or closed when the power is off. Then I installed a Lutron switch to power the valve. I hid the switch away to prevent accidental usage. www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0763KK3CX/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o05_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Hey Shane, for that Zemismart torque problem, you could make it usable by screwing a metal extension on the rotating arm so that it grips further out on the handle. The futher out on the handle you grip, the less resistance will be met but the gears/motor. My planned implementation for switching hot water between solar and burner involves a solenoid valve with a Shelly and HB.

Good suggestion, might give it a try. Would be a good, affordable solution if one could get that to work. Thanks for sharing!

Try extending the arm further out on the handle by adding some additional brackets for more leverage.

Yeah I was thinking that too. Seems like that is really the problem.
@ShaneCreates
@ShaneCreates 2 жыл бұрын
Good suggestion. I suppose that may help but I really just don’t think that one has enough torque to get the handle all the way open/closed. Plus that bracket isn’t nearly as sturdy as the other.

With an extension you dont need so much torque.

Thanks for this video. I’ve got a bunch of Aqara leak sensors. They’ve saved me once already, but only by giving me a notification and I was able to go right to the problem area and take care of it. I REALLY want a good shutoff valve I can have automated. I’ll be watching for that thinka hub to be released. Btw, just wanna say thanks for recognizing us people that are old school and just want our homekit accessories to be native. Appreciate you factoring that in to your videos.

Great video. I am hoping more companies come out with solutions for this. Wouldn't it be amazing if Eve made a water shut off valve to go along with their other product line! I have water sensors under my 7 sinks (Aqara), garden tub (Aqara), dishwasher (Eve), refrigerator (Eve), washing machine (Eve), HVAC Condenser tray (Aqara), Hot Water Heater (both Aqara and Eve), and Front Door Closet (Aqara). We live on a slope and water will come up on our front porch in a heavy rain. I would definitely get a shut off valve if it was native to HomeKit and preferably didn't require a hub. I'm liking the Bull Dog one. One thing to keep in mind is that shut off valves tend to stick over time; especially if you have a lot of calcium in your water. It isa good idea to open and close the valve at least once a month to help prevent calcium buildup around the inner workings of the valve. The valve won't do any good if it won't close when you need it to.

Another great video…My shop has flooded three times & all three times I was out of town when it happened. You have no idea how much I kick myself that I didn’t have both a HomeKit Flood Sensor & Water Shut Off each time it happened. Better believe I have both now (better late than never)!

I worded that poorly. My flood sensors are HomeKit (Aqara), but my smart water shut off valve was installed by the plumber via my landlord after the last flood. It’s a Xenon & not HomeKit compatible. I didn’t have a choice at the time, because I was out of town & just wanted it fixed. After your video, I’m contacting them tomorrow to change it. Lol

I’m a week into converting from v1 ST home controller to Homey Pro. So far the conversion has been going well and am impressed. I’ve been able to reconnect to all my existing wall switches and devices. I’ve had a few 6-8 year old sensors casualties but they are old so I expected a few anyway. The original reason for getting a smart home controler was to control a water shut off valve connected to half dozen water sensors after watching two of my family members suffer catastrophic pipe leaks. This goal continues but my old actuator is agonizing weak so I’m looking to go to the EcoNet Bulldog. So far Homey Pro has had an app to support every device I’ve added. However not surprising there is no EcoNet to support the Bulldog. However like ST, I’m confident the Bulldog can be added as a generic zwave switch (on/off = open/closed). My question is have you connected the Bulldog to Homey Pro?

Unless you have sensors every single place water enters the house or is used you aren't really protected - so under every sink, toilet, beside every shower/bath, behind/under the washer/dishwasher/fridge/water filter/hot water heater/water softener etc etc. Ideally these will not be dependent on battery power (because many are a real pain to reach once installed - think about that). Think it fully through - cost it out for ALL the sensors you will need. If your main shutoff is outside you need an outside rated shut-off unit (and outside power). If you have an RO system you may want to consider an auto shut-off on the tank since a tank full of RO water leaking can also do a lot of damage and shutting off the main water supply won't stop all of that leak. There are dedicated water monitor systems with fully integrated valves of much higher quality than these. Certainly less integrated (e.g. homekit) but for me all I want is for it to work reliably and quickly every time. If I can remote control the water valve, get notified of a leak alert and check the valve status that is enough.

Could the Zemismart hub support a Dome Shutoff Valve. Mine was working with SmartThings but just stopped and I can’t get it to reconnect.
@NewHomeTech
@NewHomeTech 2 жыл бұрын
That sucks about the Zemismart Valve I was really hoping to see that one be a game changer at that price. I am going to go with a Flo by Moen shutoff valve in the new house once they get back in stock. While I am sticking with HomeKit I am going to use Home Assistant as my backbone for a smart house to get the Flo by Moen into HomeKit. The Flo by Moen is a expensive but also really advance in some of the features and their leak detectors are decent for the price at a 3 pack.

Maybe if you attach the zemismart shut-off valve further away from the center of the rotation it will work , as the distance to apply a force to rotate an object increase the torque will increase also
@ShaneCreates
@ShaneCreates 2 жыл бұрын
Maybe a longer arm would help that, but I'm pretty sure the center of the valve and the robot must be aligned to work properly.

Slow opening is very good. If you open the faucet very quickly, there may be a water hammer and a leak may occur! Never open the faucet quickly!!! It is better not to save on such cranes, it can cost you very much! You can use an integrated motorized crane and use the Aqara relay and Aqara leak sensors with it.

1:09 Shane, I’ve been meaning to ask you about this video. I’m concerned if there is loss of power or internet outage, will the water sensor/shut-off valve configuration still work? Does Zigbee have device to device connectivity? I’ve only seen Yolink and the LoRa protocol that has this feature. I didn’t know if Zigbee works in a similar way. For safety critical devices, water sensors, smoke detectors, and power outages, I wanted a system that would keep communication between devices. Can you help me with this?
@ShaneCreates
@ShaneCreates Жыл бұрын
No, if there is no power, the device wouldn't work. You probably want to look at some sort of power backup solution that you can plug in the shut-off valve into that would allow it to work even during a power outage.

Yes. If using the wifi version of the bulldog it's the eWeLink plugin. If you have the z-wave version, you'll need to use something like Smartthings (with homebridge), or Hubitat or Thinka hubs to bring it into homekit.

Ok we need a motion sensor for earthquakes above 5 to turn off the gas. This is critical to prevent fires after earthquakes which causes more damage than the earthquakes do. So who is going to help with this. In LA for instance we kept the tool to shut off on a nail next to the gas shut off. California needs to pass a law to install this if we can get one. BUSINESS OPPORTUNITY Or we can watch San Francisco burn down again. Last time there was a fire boat next to the fire in the harbor and citizens helped to put the fire out.
