Super cool! I know it's more for fun than security, but a big security upgrade would be to use an external rated door instead of internal.

Jeff’s home lab is turning into “The Red Queen” and his home lab room “The Hive”….. I absolutely love it. There should be a speaker that plays “Welcome Jeff” when he scans in to the lab. Next thing you know there will be pressure plates installed in the floor and lasers that will detect intruders.

An AI Theta mounted in the door with facial recognition would be the easiest.

I contemplated doing this for a while, but decided it was much easier to put an NFC tag on the wall and scan the tag with my phone, which then opens a deadbolt or lever lock.

Hinges are on the outside of the door You can still get in

you can get in any way. just take out the reader (that for some stupide reason controlls the maglock. it should be a seperate device for security reasons). Ot just take out the override switch.

How hard would it be to integrate it into home assistant and make it to were you can use that to trigger things or even have control from home assistant
@jeffsponaugle6339
@jeffsponaugle6339 3 күн бұрын
Pretty easy since there is an API - And I"m just about to do that. I want the home assistant to know when it is opened to the lights can be controlled.

Why not use the electric strike on this door? - no visible lock - override mechanically without needing the override switch - keep locked when there is a power outage Also keep in mind if you use a third party card then it may only verify the card UID which is a significant downgrade in security. Official card is a mifare desfire card AFAIK.
@jeffsponaugle6339
@jeffsponaugle6339 Күн бұрын
The strike would be better, but harder to install in a door frame like this. Keep in mind this is an internal door with exposed hinges, so it is just for 'access' not for absolute security. You could take the door off, or pull the panel and disconnect the mag lock.

Ok cool, but don't forget to have a backDOOR (pun intended), if the door control server goes down and you can't open the door to fix it. Cuz that's what facebook did during their DNS outage 😂

there is no point into having the key backup. if anything goes wrong just remove the unifi reader and join the two cables together. that will force it to open the door
@zeeshanghazanfar95
@zeeshanghazanfar95 3 күн бұрын
That’s not how modern digital lock systems work. The reader most probably sends authentication data to the main control which is located inside and that controller decides wether to unlock the door or not.

Or you know… just take the hinge pins out and pull the door off but I think the point here was just to do something fun.
@jeffsponaugle6339
@jeffsponaugle6339 3 күн бұрын
There would be multiple ways to disable, including pulling the reader and just unplugging the POE power since this is the single device model. However the key was fun to add, and if I do eventually switch to the real enterprise version it will be nice to have.
