It’s interesting to see Homelander actually try to make a good impression on starlight when she first joined. Homelander just wanted to be loved, to satisfy something he was deprived of in his childhood. Actually, because Starlight doesnt know the real Homelander at this point, she's about as safe from him as possible because he's trying to give her a good (and false) impression of him. His horrid upbringing gave him a deep psychological scar that makes him crave acceptance, care, love, and all those kinds of things. Basically, for this short moment anyway he's genuinely being kind to her becsuse he doesn't want to "disappoint" her. Its also one of the coolest parts of his character arc in the show imo, each time we see him again, we slowly but surely watch him stop caring about his image. Its what makes him uniquely terrifying amongst super villains, its like standing on a beach and watching a hurricane approach, or watching the fuse burn on a stick of TNT
