In real life there usually is a lot harder to get off drugs and drink, than how it is painted out in soaps. It is not only the chemical addiction, but also the psychological one - and than there is the surroundings. What made someone become a drinker or drug addict will, most often, still be there when they get out of rehab. Whether it is people, a particular lifestyle, a particular scene, or stress with life in general. Therefore it is more the rule, than the exception, that people don`t succeed getting clean or sober permanently. The abuse just changes form. Either by switching to a different type of drug - even people meant to be on Metadon tend to add to that from time to time, so the metadon more secure them a daily fix, rather than cures them of their addiction - or by doing drugs or drink in a different pattern. But even this slightly changed behavior can add quality to their health and life, and therefore is a progress. Not the least because it proves to themselves they can change if they try - which could stimulate them to apply more to other aspects of their lives as well, and succeed better there to. And as a consequence of this be more motivated to rid themselves of their addiction in the long run. But it is not unusual for drug and drink rehabilitation institutions to have the same people coming back again and again. Or for people who don`t have access to such help to continue to deteriorate over the years - until dying before someone of their age normally should. Both long time drug abuse and alcohol abuse most often also leaves permanent damage of various kinds, effecting anything from memory to concentration, voice, skin, and that is leaving out the psychological problems ex addicts either has tried to self-cure with drugs or drink, or are forced to face without them. It is sad really, how even those who have managed to leave their addiction behind them, are constantly reminded of them when looking in the mirror, or hearing their voice - and how this again triggers even more painful memories, or let them recall spilt opportunities their addiction has deprived them of in the past. Like when Ollie talked about having ruined his footballing career. Ste was not only a drug addict, but also abusive of his then wife, Amy, because of a not ideal upbringing with a violent stepfather and a mother more concerned about him, than of Ste. Whether he physically and psychologically abused Amy because of what his stepfather had done to him, or because he was gay and needed to camouflage and suppress that fact with a terrifying façade so no one should dare question his masculinity, the show never addressed in full, as I remember. But in his case I will claim coming out as gay, being himself and liked as who he was, more influenced his ability to be a good and caring father, than getting off the drugs did.
@Tvjunkieful122 жыл бұрын
@@annieareyouok1451 As true as that is, it is also a fact that addiction - drugs, alcohol, cigarettes, porn, exercise, shopping, hoarding, or whatever - is a poor substitute for something that isn't right in the addicts life. In Ste's case, because of how he has changed after he came out, I will claim fear of being discovered to be gay made him aggressive and violent towards his first wife, Amy - while shame of how he had treated her, and insecurity as a result of the physical violence he suffered from his stepfather as a youth was why he needed the escape and chemical hug the drugs offered. I will say it so bluntly, that had Ste not been physically abused by his stepfather, and felt ignored by his mother, he would never have become a drug addict. And had there not been prejudices against gay people, Ste would have been more comfortable with himself and his sexuality, and therefore would not have felt a need to hide his true self behind a brutal and controlling mask - copying to an extent the abuse Ste's own stepfather put Ste through. You are right that to stop drinking, taking drugs or whatever addiction we are talking of, the key success factor is the addict's ability to change routines, thinking and behavior

He hasn`t been diagnosed with Early Onset Dementia for that long - a little more than a year, year and a half. Nancy`s MS to remain so steady for as long as it has now, is far more of a miracle. Early Onset usually leads to death after around 5-10 years. But some are helped by medication or treatments (like dancing) and can increase both life quality and -expectancy. Others again deteriorate so fast, or have been diagnosed so late, they die months after having been diagnosed.
