The UK's housing minister was sacked after less than a year in office. Even that makes her one of the longest to serve in that role. There have been seven in the last two years.
Housing and renting is in crisis in Britain. Figures shared with this programme by housing charity Shelter show more than 800,000 adults are at risk of losing their home.
We met one family who are being evicted and could face Christmas homeless, and a man left with no choice but to live in his small car because he can't afford housing.

@@Kevin-mk6jo Then the public authority should buy it. Because a public purchase is more convenient for the owner the price can then have a built in discount to reflect this. As the property was rented out as a home the owner does not have a right similar to other property rights .In selling it to public authority a close to market price is fair because the owner is not paying full cost for an economic decision because circumstances have changed. The tenant still needs a home so there intention has not changed. The only party that has changed intentions is the owner. It is not the responsibility of government to guarantee risk free economic activity. It is the responsibility of government to get good value for taxpayers and efficiently manage housing for people who need it . Nobody seeks to deny rights to owners but they cannot be subsidised by policy which diminishes rights of taxpayer's and people in need. A home is a home to people who live in it taxpayer's need value for money while ensuring that property rights are protected but do not supersede the rights of two other parties. If owners advocate that a discounted price is unfair than the government has a right and a duty to impose a higher tax on a sale because the action of the sale results in a significantly higher cost to exchequer, economy and society. It is the responsibility of government to ensure that all three parties are protected . Not just one while also realising that a home is more than just a utility and homelessness damages society.

This is how the Tories have fully demonstrated that they have wrecked the economy and society by ignoring and forgetting the basic responsibilities of Government. As a result they have put the economy and society in a position where it will take at least twenty years to recover.

@@doriswaddington2418 the housing problem is the result of Tory values being implemented by both parties in local government due to how marvellous everyone thought the butcher’s daughter was. Also the favouritism given on waiting lists to women many of whom should still be living with their parents. And, of course, immigrants with large numbers of dependents who jump the queue. I assume many people don’t watch the full video. She has 6 months worth of rent upfront and a full time proper job. It’s not like she’s so broke that she can’t pay her rent because of having 4 kids. Stop saying she shouldn’t have kids. She has to leave because of the landlord not because she can’t afford the rent, okay?
@jamescaley9942

The landord is doing exactly what Shelter and Generation Rent wanted: selling up. Countless thousands are doing the same and it is a disaster for many tenants. In many cases their rent was below market rent and it will be near impossible to find alternative accommodation. This tenant may be in a "full ltime proper job" but imagine if HMRC said to her "I can see you earn 25k, but you will need to pay tax on 30k". How insane would it be, to tax people on money they haven't even made? That is what is happening to many landlords which is another reason they are selling up. Laughably Shelter blame seciont 21 for the current evictions when in fact it is the plan to ban S21 which is triggering more landlords to sell up. If section 21 is banned and landlords seek possession on alternate grounds (which are the tenant's fault) the tenant will be "intentionally homeless" and not eligible for local authority support. More homelessness and another win for Shelter.

Asking a real estate agent whether you should buy a home right now is like to asking an alcoholic whether they think you should have a drink lol. Homes in my neighborhood that cost around $450k in sales in 2019 are now going for $800 to $950k. Every seller in my neighborhood is currently making a $350k profit. Simply unreal. In all honesty, deflation is what we require. The only other option is for many people to go bankrupt, which would also be bad for the economy. That is the only way to return to normal.

Home prices will come down eventually, but for now; its best to offset some of your real estate investments and get into the financial markets or gold. The new mortgage rates are crazy, add to that the recession and the fact that mortgage guidelines are getting more difficult. Home prices will need to fall by a minimum of 40% (more like 50%) before the market normalizes. If you are in cross roads or need sincere advise on the best moves to take now its best you seek an independent advisor who knows about the financial markets.

Hey, I am in Australia and this situation is very real here. Rent is unaffordable and if you do find a house or flat there will be around 80-120 people applying for the same place. The owners of my place now have sold and I must move. I deffinately cannot afford rent anywhere, I was lucky to get this place 11 years ago at a really cheap rent that was never raised. I have purchased a tent and have been giving away my possesions to prepare for the homeless situation ahead for me.

Like you said, get rid of things and only keep what you REALLY need. I’m too old for people wanting 20-30 year old flatmates and too young for a retirement village. What a horrible time to be alive. 6 months of rent is irrelevant to a landlord as what is she going to pay the rest of the rent with in the next year or so. She is only having to leave in the middle of winter because her case is going to court. The landlord would have waited 18 months for that court date and she will likely be forced out by bailiffs with 2 weeks notice now. Court dates are the last stop before forced eviction. She wants to be housed by the council as she easily could of found someone to rent in 18 months.( idea: why not rent in your budget)... She wants a council houses. These channel 4 videos are so suspect its hilarious people actually buy these stories. 😂

@@starrwinter that's because the landlord can make a claim for unpaid rent against a salary. The court can and do award the money to be paid by your employer straight to the landlord (the debt). If the income is lower the court award the landlord a lower amount and it takes years to recover the debt. Having 6 months rent saved is irrelevant if her income will not cover the rent in the long run. Shelter is a right housing is not. The people who lived above me did the same and in the process of destroying the flat they lived in, they also did major damage to mine (think flooding the upstairs and what that did to my ceiling). I worked hard to buy my place and the mortgage needs to be covered when I rent it out. I don’t owe anyone cheap rent when I become a landlady and I will certainly be good and fair, but this is my place, my investment, and it needs to be covered. I am a landlord and have not increased my tenants rent in the last 2 years as I am covering the expenses and have a very good tenant. I know costs have gone up but a good tenant is worth keeping . There has to be some balance and as most workers seem to need some sort of universal credit the levels at which the govt pays rent should be increased to ease the pressure on tenants, My tenant is brilliant but when she moved in she had 5 kids including one disabled and so was allowed a 4 bedroomed house . The older ones have left and she only has two girls so the govt says the family only need two beds but in this area they would pay virtually the same for a two bed property and this is nearly 300 pounds over the govt allowance.

The garden is well kept and there are no issues with the neighbours. My neighbours rented their house when they went abroad for a year and despite their tenant being in full time work with children at private school and having horses the tenant only ever paid the first months rent and it took a court order to get the house back. Me and my family are in temporary accommodation after being given a section 21 back in March. We are a family of 4 where 3 people are disabled. We lived at the property we were evicted from for 8 years, the house the children spent most of their childhood at. Private renting doesn't suit us anymore as we need adaptations due to health deterioration but with not enough homes "in the housing stock", the waiting times to be housed, even with the highest priority, are 2 or more years plus. Families that can rent privately and are on low income, are the worst affected because the local housing allowance has a cap and said cap, doesn't match with the current cost of living such as high rents and mortgages, making finding an affordable house almost impossible even when you work full time earning between 30-35k per year. This country is crumbling while the people in parliament live in their luxurious apartment/houses and claim their rent as expenses, all while still getting a chunky wage. We are all doomed!

People should be able to buy land and put an 80k caravan on it but you can't because the system doesn't work like that and no one wants to admit it, The system is created in such away for people to fall between the cracks and in this way pay out the countries debts, Everyone wants to pretend that everything is fine and everything is there to work for us. I think people need to be honest about the situation we are in, and then people will not end up in this situation in the first place because we will be educated to understand the reality of the consequences.

Joan, yes. The ‘right-to-buy’ stripped councils of their housing stock. Sadly this buttress was a ‘natural’ control on rents, without it, buy-to-let financed by bank loans mean rents will always head north especially when interest rates are rising. Right-to-buy and the privatizations are the main two Tory (Thatcher) policies of the last 44 years. Unfortunately, right-to-buy can be seen as the worst Conservative policy given it’s far reaching effects whilst privatizations are patchy at best and at worse have not worked at all for the utilities of electricity, gas and especially water. The most amazing aspect of this is we know the solution; allow local authorities to buy houses and flats but this prohibited whilst the government allows them instead to by commercial real estate which is now bankrupting many. Just as the small boats has become a problem because we can no longer return these people to France or otherwise as we could when we were in the EU. Now Rwanda is off the agenda we need to return to finding a way join in the Dublin agreement’s successor so that we can once again return migrants to the EU. But that would be a failure for those who will, without blushing, tell you; Brexit is working.

There is a problem in the private rental industry. As more and more landlords are selling their properties off. Some are leaving it all together because of Councils wanting money for having rentals in their county. For one county, charges £500 pounds per property. It is a license to have a property in the country. It is supposed to get rid of bad landlords. But when you as a landlord complain about another one the council does nothing so it is all about making money for them.

There is a huge rental crisis here in Australia at the moment, lots of reasons of course, but a big part of it is people with investment properties previously renting out that property now find it more profitable to use their properties as AirBNB stays (which tend to not let to same person more than a month at a time). Also you can no longer offset the mortgage just the interest and only at 20% not at the 40%. I do post this every now and then, but it is not lack of housing, it is overpopulation. In the case of the people interviewed I imagine if there was more availability to move to London or other such cities and afford to live, then some of their younger peers would have moved freeing up the housing market for them. As it happens we keep flowing in 700,000 incomers a year and then allowing too many externals to purchase properties. It is a overpopulation and external forces issue and until this is sorted this cycle of pain will continue. They need to tighten the cycle of of external investment and movement pushing up prices and down availability. The official population figures will be wrong, we will be at least 5 million people more overpopulated than is even recorded.

Do you think British people don't have children and families of their own? Even if you could stop every asylum seeker, and deport every immigrant from the last decade, the same problem would remain. Home building has stalled across the country since 2009. Developers would rather build student accommodation than homes or flats because it's more profitable. And whenever developers do propose building more flats, they face intense opposition from the locals who do not want to see new developments spoil their view or lower the value of their own properties. And even by some miracle a new development goes ahead, it's rarely affordable.

Its kinda sad that all I wish for now is to be able to live in a home without having to worry about it being sold as soon as our first lease runs out. The rental crisis is very real and very scary. If I didn’t have heaps of money saved up along with a good paying job my family and I would be screwed. Even though the agency we’re with have done a great job getting us into a new house really quickly, we still have to pay the three months in advance, the bond (because we have to wait a while to get our old bond back), and removalists which costs a fortune.

There are more causes of course, Wars etc. But can't ignore the lockdowns, fucking up the economy because of the lockdowns. Instead of some old unhealthy people to pay the price, the rest of the population (Younger generation) are now to suffer for years to come. The "prioritizing home ownership and landlords are selling up so renters don't have rental options anymore" argument seems a bit thin. If the rental units are being sold then the people buying them were likely renters and are therefore leaving the rental market. The principal failure is the lack of investment in housing, *particularly* social/affordable/community housing and the policy of viewing housing as an investment rather than a basic human right.

1st suggestion change the rules so that mortgages for fixed rates last the entire length of the mortgage just like in the US. Then those on mortgages will be unaffected by interest rate rises. People will get mortgages they can afford and you can wrack up interest rates to stop new mortgages. That will also mean rents do not get increased when buy to lets interest rate rises.

For anyone thinking about moving to Australia just to give you a head's up that our rental options are really bad too......even though we have all this land. It's 18 years on the public housing waiting list. We do have smaller cities and regional towns (bigger that country towns) that are affordable to rent but I would avoid out 3 biggest cities and look elsewhere......There is no such thing as council housing here. It's all pretty much privately owned but most states have a law letting you keep pets etc.

Regional rents in Australia are also sky-rocketing. There's simply not enough housing to go around The vacancy rate in South Australia is .65% Our prime ministers answer is mass immigration which puts more pressure on the already tight rental market It seems to be a global problem and having a full-time job is no longer enough to afford to rent a property anymore.A high income is required

You can't put this on landlord's. Renter's are only borrowing the property, renting is only ever a short term solution. If the government makes it impossible for people to sell their second homes because of laws being implicated that allow tenants to stay, all you'll see is a massive decline in properties for rent. Landlord's won't want to get involved in a system that penalises them heavily. The immediate problem lies with our government and a massive shortage of affordable housing...this has been neglected for decades and now we are witnessing the fallout. Things will undoubtedly get worse before anything gets better.

Iv got everything you need to live full time in a tent if it ever came to it in my life I do have everything needed. Get camping equipment and make at least two bug out bags first aid kits everything. And then put some money in the bags and forget about it. It's definitely better to have it then to be stood in a doorway or bus stop when it's raining. That's my advice 😊

I’m a landlord of multiple properties and I have had enough and will sell them. There are two sides to every story. As a landlord I have to deal with problems from tenants, complaints from neighbours, damage, useless agents who can’t even arrange a gas cert on time ( Agents are total useless yobs and their reputation is fully deserved. I have dealt with many lying, useless, greedy estate agents ), expensive council licences and so on. The private sector will vanish over the coming years. I can’t wait to get rid of my properties. In the past I have given tenants pristine properties and they have been returned in a mess. Most people who rent at the lower end are not house pride or very clean. I have been doing this a long time and I am confident in saying that. Most won’t even clean the toilet! There are always two sides to every story.

Private landlords rent their home for all sorts of reasons. My husband took a job in France and our house insurance really penalised us for having an empty property. After 1 year we bit the bullet and rented our home, and garden. garden. Never, ever again. Every expat we knew in France had a beautiful home they had rented out in UK because they always intended on coming home.

Conservative donors who have collectively given the party more than £21m since 2001 have been declared as the ultimate owners of UK properties held through more than 150 offshore companies in a new government register. Nadhim Zahawi and his wife have a UK portfolio of properties between them valued at 100M. Accounts show just under £30m has been provided as unsecured loans (sources undisclosed) to a company called Zahawi & Zahawi, which has paid £60m for a property portfolio that includes commercial and retail premises in London, Birmingham, Brighton and Walton-on-Thames in Surrey. Nearly one in five Conservative MPs are currently landlords, according to research by campaign group 38 Degrees, a surprising figure given the Government's anti-landlord stance in recent years. The study counted 87 MP landlords - more than 13% of the Commons - of whom 53 claimed rental income from one home and 34 from two or more properties, according to a report in The Guardian Of the 68 Conservative MPs, chancellor Jeremy Hunt has seven flats in Southampton. There appears to be an interesting patern forming here.
