Large 12V DC Box Fan! (w/motor speed control!) Easy DIY. Full Instructions. fan is powered using a single 100 watt solar panel or 12v battery. pushes same amount of air as an AC box fan. fan runs smooth and fast (super slow too - if you use optional motor speed controller). total cost only $45 (add 12 for the speed control unit). nothing like it on the market today so i decided to make one. great project if you're thinking of getting into solar power or off-gridding. has lots of uses and is super easy to make. note that a lot of the projects i've built over the years make use of a 20" AC box fan. now using this you can run all of those on solar too! fan is 21 1/4" square and made with 2x6 lumber (actual 5.5" x 1.5") and 1/2" plywood. the 4 small pieces in the corners are 2x3 lumber. fan is very solid and runs smooth. no vibrations or shaking.
i highly recommend getting the speed control device. it allows you to run the fan at any of 100's of speeds and can extend the amount of time that it can be run on a battery. average time fan will run on high with standard average size 100 ah deep-cycle 12v battery is about 5 hours. on medium it's about 10 hours and on low about 20 or more. note also that on medium or low you can barely hear the motor. here's a link (to a similar speed controller). the original one i used is not available at this time (but this one is just as good)

Just for fun I bought (6) 100 watt panels, set them up on the roof and went into the basement to see what kind of things I could do with 500 watts of DC. Right away I noticed no one makes a good 12 volt box fan. I ordered a new radiator fan that was balanced and has grills on both sides. I ordered a cheap speed control from amazon and installed the whole unit into an old case. Works like a charm except its a bit loud but I love that it can run right off the panels with no control. In the mornings it starts on its own and runs all day until dusk. Its perfect to keep air from stagnating in basements. Also all that free electricity is hooked up to strip lights in the closets and anywhere that I need it. I use it to charge all my batteries including all my yard equipment power tools etc. Anything left over goes into a 12 volt ceramic heater to preheat the water going into the hot water tank.

that great! you've found lots of uses. i run dozens of things just using 100 watt solar panels. i actually made this box fan because i couldn't find a 12v full size box fan anywhere. someone should make and sell them and include the 100 watt solar panel. simple off grid cooling

For getting the variable speed control and power consumption adjustment... this is a better deal. For those wanting to do this, using a normal box fan... A 12v to 120v (100w) inverter is about $12-$18, Plus the normal 120v box-fan for $18-$20 is total of $30-$38 for the setup. However, most 120v box-fans run at 80w (high), 70w (med), 60w (low). Using a car-radiator fan, with the PWM speed-controller, can give you more wattage control and air-flow control. (Only use what is needed.) From 10w-80w, normally. A similar unit, pre-made, would cost you $200-$400 (Because they all like to price-gouge the 12v market.) FYI: Junk-yards (u-pull-a-part), only charge about $5-$10 for a cars electric radiator fans. They will last for years! In a car, they normally only run when the car is IDLE and not driving. The bearings are 1000x better than any box-fan's bearings, and the blades are stronger and better tuned for "moving air" with a higher static-load. Also, they are almost ALL variable-speed ready. (You can even pull the fan controller from the same car, for the cars "blower fan", for about $2-$5, or free... as part of the fan pull.) Add a cheap solar charger and a cheap 12v car battery, and you have a fan that can operate 24/7, at a modest setting. (For lower wattage and better air-flow, at a lower wattage, add a large 12v computer fan, which uses a stepper motor, which is more efficient at lower voltages. There is no shortage of "road-side computers" or "free computers", which are useless for computing, but they all have decent fans within them, that have plenty of 12v, variable-speed life left in them.) PRO-TIP: Make a filter-cube, using 5 mass-air-flow, fiberglass, AC/Furnace filters, taped together to form a "box", and you have dust and pollen free air-flow, at high speeds, for a modest cost of adding another $10-$20 to the build. It'll clean more air, faster, than your homes AC unit would, with a fraction of the power. (80w instead of 1.8Kw or 1,800w) By the way, a homes AC blower-fan will add tons of heat to a house, that it is trying to cool. Almost makes it redundant, to a point. Best upgrade you can make for a home central-AC is to move the "blower-fan motor", outside of the house, so it isn't "inline" within the cold air that you are paying a premium for cooling, just to heat it back up again, as it cools the blower-fans, stressed motor. Stressed from, usually, a tiny, undersized, clogged air-filter, which makes it run even hotter. P.S. They never include "internal blower fans generated heat", into the calculation when selling you a central-AC unit. They don't even include that heat, as a negative, in the "SEER ratings", or when measuring the real output of an AC unit. That is why a window unit, which has the motors outside and isolated from the internal parts, is more efficient, in all respects. They are just not convenient, like a central-AC.

I checked my fan motor inside squirle cage. It didn't seem to give off much heat and no where near what my fan belt 1/3 hp motors were always too hot to touch. This one is internal to the cage and must be far more efficient.

It is a good idea for 12 volts direct . Very useful is to run a fan with a small inverter a 400 watts or smaller will do but the more efficient the inverter the better . I even run a tower fan from my solar panels using a pure sine inverter. Also induction Cooktop and a Dometic refrigerator. You could probably run a small inverter and fan using 18650 batteries.

A 3 volt (2 D cell) personal fans runs well of a USB cord, more output and so far hasn't burnt a motor, and I have 2 of the same O2Cool personal fans. A big one would be great, so good idea and nice design. Almost could have reused a box fan frame for it though, which is what I'll do if I find a junk one.

So this fan is brushed motor? The dimmer controller says it's specifically for a dc brushed motor and unfortunately no longer available. It's confusing on Amazon whether the automotive dc fans are brushed or brushless. I was told brushless motors are better bc no or low maintenance? Help me understand the details behind which fan and etc parts needed for this. Off grid desert stables really need these to help with fly control and cool the animals. 🙏🏻

I want to use one 200w solar panel and 2 of same fans that you use. Would you put two wires into the speed controller and split it there? Or would you just wire them(fans) in series , parallel? Sorry I forget which one does what, and just use one wire out of controller. I'd prefer just to use solar panel to run them, so is 200watt one enough for 2 fans? I would have them up in attic, but if power went out I would pull them down and want to use them for air circulation after power loss to home. So where to put quick connects in circuit? Any idea welcome, and those fans are a genius idea.
@desertsun02

hi there. i'd wire the fans in parallel (parallel keeps the voltage the same but spreads out the amps). one 12v 200w solar panel would probably be enough to run 2 fans close to full speed.

I am getting a small solar setup that has a 12v battery and I'd like to be able to hook a fan in it. Where did you get the fan you are using. I can hook a fan into it with a car cigarette charging port, but I'm not sure where/which fan to buy with a DC motor. Can you link to the one you have in the video?

@@desertsun02 I bought all that stuff and it didn't work. But I wire the fan to the battery it's too much power. I think I got a bad switch I'm not getting no power to the fan. Is blue the red + and black the - ? For the fan. Thanks for the help.
@desertsun02
@desertsun02 2 жыл бұрын
@Brian Reynolds if i understand what you're saying, you're saying that when you hooked the battery to the fan it ran at full speed (but that was too strong of a breeze?) ...and then when you hooked the speed control switch in-line the fan wouldn't run at all? if that is what is happening then it could be a bad switch (unless you put the wires into the switch in the wrong places). also did you buy a 12amp or higher switch (like the one i used)? if the switch isn't rated to handle the amp draw it could just burn out within seconds. most of the fans i use can be hooked up either way. (depending on which way you want the blade to turn).
@fred96002001

I use the same model that you use and it turns out that switch was bad. I went back to Amazon and got the 30 amp switch and it turns out that the 30 amp switch works. I replaced the one that you told me to get in the parts last but this model number at Amazon Asin# B09Q2QVWVX this one seems to work out of the box. I didn't wire it the wrong way because the wired this one the same way I wired the other one and this one works the other one didn't. Apparently I got a hold of a bad switch.

No box, just held with 4 guys to the ceiling. Can't run full speed like that, but this is a CRAZY fan! @desertsun02
@desertsun02 2 жыл бұрын
yep, but even a light/medium duty extension cord wire usually handles 13 amps and a 12v 100w solar panel puts out 5.5 to 6 amps (usually) so regular extension cord wire can usually handle two 12v 100w panels

I have been gathering parts for a project like this, I have a pwm speed controller, to work with up to 60v DC. And a fan I may or not use, an aftermarket car fan, 14"-16" I will be using batteries though, I'm off grid, I have both 12 & 24 v batteries and 120v avalible, but more I can power from straight DC is more efficient, like my lights, they are 99% all dc, I have 120v lights but only if needed, my inverter is for TV fridge and microwave, well pump,

Does this fan motor need to be lubricated? What's the maintenance on the panels? I'm in desert also but don't understand the safety behind making a setup like this and the longevity. Doesn't it need fuse? I'm looking at outside setup for horses and a portable one when I go to dog events. 😊 Wish you were local, I need a Solar and Electricity Mentor!
@desertsun02
@desertsun02 Жыл бұрын
hi. nope, the fan motor doesn't have to be lubricated. these motors will run many years and are 'maintenance free'. there is no maintenance on the panels either (except for keeping debris off of them). these types of fans can easily last 15 years and the panels last 20 or more. there really are no safety issues with this. it's basically just an automotive radiator hooked to a solar panel. just make sure to use a 12v solar panel. no fuses are needed
