We all have a lot to be thankful for Tony. I'm so glad Tanja is on the mend. She's a pretty tough girl. I tell my 5 young granddaughters all the time, that girls are tougher than boys. Your dear wife proves my point. For her to get banged up, and just like that, she's back at your side helping out again. Take care buddy.

I know this is an old video, but if you happen to see this, it may help in the future. When you are squaring up the ends of your boards. put the framing square on the board and instead of marking a line, hold the square there and use it as a guide for your saw, you get much straighter cuts.

Tony you are such a character to listen to as you work and gabber the whole time. That beam or what ever it is should be strong as nails :) I guess only you could put nails in backwards. The combine goes by and distracts you. Did you have attention problems in school? That's what happens when your gawking around. Thanks for sharing Pray the wife gets 100 per cent back in shape. 10 degrees this morning early

It's hard to not do anything when you're recovering from an injury. I hurt my foot a couple of years ago, it was swollen and had to wear special shoes, but I couldn't help but to get work done. It's hard to just sit around. I hope Tanja heals soon! 👍🏥

Thanks for the video. Question: why do you use nails? Screws seem to be much better for building glulam.
@TonysTractorAdventure Жыл бұрын
All of the builders tell me nails hold better. The beam is holding well.
@24June91 Жыл бұрын
Nails can pop out, screws do not do that. nails are better at sheer strength than screws, but you do not need sheer strength as you have strong glue.@@TonysTractorAdventure

While i realize this video is dated, i noticed some comments about using screws, however since the beam will be vertical nails are the right answer from an engineering perspective. They are elastic in comparison to screws and can give a bit due to tensile strength concerns. Buildings will always give over time even if only slightly. There are certainly places where screws are the right choice, but this isn't one of them. So going with nails was the right choice.

Factory laminated beams are laminated with structural rated glue under factory conditions and the kiln dried lumber is surface planned. Do you understand that pva glue is not rated for structural use?
@TonysTractorAdventure2 жыл бұрын
It is holding great. I didn't use kiln-dried wood. This lumber was cut on my sawmill. The glue is glue and holds structures together all the time. It was a great learning experience.
@gary247522 жыл бұрын
@@TonysTractorAdventure Obviously, you did not do any research on it. Glue is not just glue. Using pva glue on rough lumber with questionable moisture content and not clamping may count against you in the long run. You did use mechanical fastening, but a lot depends on the type of fastener you used and the spacing at which they were installed. The species of lumber used along with the loading on the beams is also a factor. Time will tell.

Glad the wife is okay. Looks like you are going to use a lot of glue compared to the liquid nails. I used an old Craftsman claw hammer for years, but last year retired it for a Dewalt 14oz Titanium hammer. Like yourself, I'm surprised the nail gun was able to load them in backwards/upside down. Yet, if that is the worst mistake you make, you are doing well. Have a great Thanksgiving!

Better to let them dry or they’ll move as they dry , plus the glue can have room to sink into the lumber when it’s dry.
