I’ve been looking for all kinds of different readily available items to make pontoons out of. Five gallon buckets crossed my mind, but i hadn’t seen anyone use them until now. Glad to finally see someone try them out!
@edwardhellwig45015 жыл бұрын
Try 12"diameter" pvc with 12"diameter x @12" long 45° angle up piece on both sides to use as pontoons. I'm not sure if that is enough to keep the "boat" afloat. You might have to go to 14" diameter pvc with 14"diameter 45° up angle to ut through the water just like real pontoon boats. You might even be able to add a second seat if the pontoons are enough to support it. I don’t have a car & am not near the water (besides being 71yrs old & living on Social Security), but keep me posted if you try it!!!

What’s your input on making this project so it comes apart easy to fit in a car?

We are on the same page. I am actually trying to create a version of this that will fit in the backseats of cars. Thanks for the comment

Would this work for extremely shallow water, I mean knee deep water for bowfishing?
@supergokue13 жыл бұрын
I believe so, it did a great job in low water. Thank you for the question, I appreciate it.

@@supergokue1 one more question, can I add a shooting platform that would sit on top of the buckets so I can stand when I'm shooting?
@edwardhellwig45015 жыл бұрын
Great idea with the buckets, but they could also be why it goes so slow, because the front of the buckets have to 'plow' through the water! I'm sure that the buckets are less expensive, but have you thought of using 12"diameter pvc (if it's available) about 12ft long on each side of the 'boat' replacing the buckets & attaching a 12"diameter 45° angled up 12" long pvc piece to the front (& the back) of the pvc to allow the pvc to 'cut' or 'ride' over the water?? Wishing you great luck no matter whitch way you go!!!

I will look into it. Thank you for the suggestions, Lonny

@@supergokue1 I'm not an engineer, so I have no idea how to calculate how big the pvc has to be to support the boat, but maybe it might even support a second seat & person! I don’t live near water & don't drive & I'm living paycheck to paycheck on Social Security, so I'm living vicariously through you. I used to live on a lake when I was a kid & my uncle worked for General Tire & some how got us (2 brothers & 3 sisters) a huge pontoon raft with rubber pontoons that seemed to be almost 2ft in diameter with plywood lashed to them. I have no idea what the rubber "tubes" were used for. The plywood on top was @3ft x 6ft. The only problem was getting on a raft that high above the water. I loved being on the water & again, wish you the best of luck! I did see a KZbin where someone built a boat with small pvc tubes & it kept sinking. I think his last try was using 8" pvc pontoons. You migh do a search on pvc boats & see if you can improve on it. Please keep me posted on you "boating" endeavors. I'm anxious to see you succeed!!!

@@supergokue1 I do know one calculation that might help. The weight of the entire boat (you, motor, fishing (rods, reels, live well, & tackle, etc), & chair, canopy, etc, has be less than the weight of the water able to be displaced by the buckets or pontoons (basically all the 'floats'), etc. So just calculate the volume of the 'floats' & the volume of the water displaced by the floats. Just make sure that the water weight is les than one,half the colume of the 'floats' so that the 'floats' aren't running along submergered or just barely above water!! Good luck calculating that!?! I suppose that you can get the weight of everything before assembling it, then calculate the amount of water able to be displaced by the 'floats'??

Will do, and thank you for all of the great info!

A 5 gallon bucket will support about 40 lbs in full submersion. 8 buckets will give you 320 lbs. So if you want your buckets halfway out of the water, figure only about 150 lbs of support on the safe side. Figure about 20 buckets for 2 adults and gear if you really want to stay dry and carry a lot of gear such as 4+ rods, tackle bag, cooler, etc. In my 14' Jon "rated at 530lbs max" I carry up to 8 rods & rod holders, Oars & small paddle, Front & rear anchors, 2 seat cushions, 2 large fish baskets, landing net, 2 life jackets, cooler, large tackle bag, etc. But this is real fishing and not summer playing. I'm studying different float ideas such as buckets and PVC tubing to make detachable side floats (6" x 10' tubing) or short> 36" x large diameter outrigger pods using 10" pvc or buckets, small barrels, etc. I'll probably go w/ adjustable and detachable outriggers as I mainly need stability from rocking in boat and wind waves. I'll rig the adjustment brackets w/a socket for a removable lever (1" x 3' pipe) where I can shove the floats 99% submerged on both sides for max support if need be. Figuring the outriggers on 3' arms as well. Looking on Craigslist I have found surplus 20 gal food grade bbls for around $10 - 15.00. They are 14" dia x 26" height and will offer 143 lbs of support at full submerge. Figure 70 lbs at half submerged so 6 bbls will give you 420 lbs and 8 bbls 560 lbs. Diameter is amazing stuff. 2- 5 gal buckets at 10 x 28 = 80lbs full submerge whereas 1 barrel 14 x 26 = 143lbs! A 8 x 28 tube only offers 50 lbs. If supergokue had used 4, 20 gal bbls instead of 8, 5 gal buckets on this project he would have gained 252lb of extra buoyancy. I do realize he has made an improved boat since this one.

Initially I was wondering how the PVC was attached and reinforced at the center and what stops the buckets from leaking. After seeing the build I think its all good.
