Homemade Belt Sander / Grinder/ 2"x72" - part 2 - Motorizing and Finishing

In this video I finished the belt sander. I put the engine of an old machine and applied the paint.
The machine was running smoothly, but need a more powerful engine.

I just started trying to make knives and quickly realized I need a good grinder, and then realized even quicker, they are expensive! This design looks like the one to go with, simple, no frills, and it should work. Thanks for the nice build!

very well done Sir, simple and clean design. I have already built mine except for the tension bar with tracking wheel as I was waiting for my belts to get in. I was just using scrap things that we had left over from salvage yard runs. my cost has been a couple bolts and the belts, a far cry from what one would cost.

You might find find you get a lot of wear with a wooden platen behind the belt, you could use steel plate on its own or face the wood platen with a thin steel plate for better wear. Very sweet build however, I like the simplicity of it all but especially the tension arm and tracking adjustment. Nicely done!

Sir, this is probaly the best DIY of a belt grinder I've ever saw! If it's ok with you, I'll inspire myself in your project to do one for me. I'll replace th pulleys for skateboard wheel's and power it up wit an electric motor. Thank's for sharing this wih the world. Hail from Portugal.

Very useful idea! What size motor did you use? And, what size do you think would work in the way you wanted?

The motor is 1/2 hp (about 350Watt). I think it is necessary 1 hp.

Treadmill motor, lotsa' people use these. They can be controlled easily with an a/c controller and bridge rectifier.
