Yep, the heat sink on 3/8" material takes some serious amperage, but since he welded it all around and both sides, I would think the welds will take more than the Tractor can handle. Not a lot of penetration there. Time to upgrade the Welder Babe! A one-sided fillet weld would give for sure, so I am sure you are completely correct. Also, a bevel on the ends of the HSS would help; I think he has an abrasive cut off saw that could handle the tube ends; I have seen it done. I suppose he could have preheated the material after tacking it first though. It might surprise you but 1/4" material with a good weld might actually outperform the 3/8" with the cold welds.
