This is a great idea. Love the resourcefulness and frugality. I’m using this for sifting my mealworms. I was considering buying the bucket fitting sifters. Not anymore!
@FastGardeningMichigan Жыл бұрын
That is WHY I thought of this! Mealworms are 90 bucks for a 12lb bag and mealworms make my chickens lay like crazy in winter. I thought those sifters looked great until I saw the price. I'm going to take a couple more buckets and use finer mesh just for the mealworms. I'm just doing a 2 tub system so realistically the 1/4" will be fine to move beetles to the breeding tub.

Love the simplicity and convenience. Great job. Might I suggest a smaller bucket for top or a larger bottom. Mesh screen was over cut and kind of wasted a lot of material, cut from edge not 6-7 inches into screen, my only complaint. Thank you

How tall is this gizmo when completed? I’m a 5’3 female and was wondering if I would be able to shake the buckets without them hitting the ground. The guy demonstrating it looks to be over 6 feet tall. I thought about standing on something to elevate my height, but that would be dangerous because I’m also elderly.
@VermiCast_Garden11 ай бұрын
Really good idea for a sifter. Most gardeners should have those items readily available. So how many gallons of compost does your chicken coop deliver every year? Appears to be about 7 or 8 chickens. Thanks for posting.
@FastGardeningMichigan11 ай бұрын
Ive never fully harvested it. I only take it as I need it. Its about a foot deep and the sheltered run is 8x10. There's a decent amount in there

I need to do something with soil mixed with stones and broken up pottery, and riddled with weed seeds. I was thinking dispose in skip bin then replace with new soil, but that will costs like AUD 1000. And then I could sneak little bits of soil in our regular trash which is a no no. Or find some where nice and quiet in the country to dump the soil, I think there is nothing bad in it so morally I can be OK with this. I was toying with making my own sieve and saving the soil I have, I am leaning more towards this now.

So if I sift the material on the floor of my coop can I use whatever goes through the sifter?
@FastGardeningMichigan Жыл бұрын
Depends what you use in your coop. This is in my run. I load the run with anything that would go in the compost pile. Chickens compost it in place
@dehnadykeman3614 Жыл бұрын
@Fast Gardening Michigan I use many things including wheat or alfalfa straw, pine pellets and shavings and all of my vegitarian food scraps get thrown in as well. I want to use the coop floor "soil" they have been making for three years but I'm worried about the newer poop being too hot.
@FastGardeningMichigan Жыл бұрын
@@dehnadykeman3614 i didnt have issues with mine being too hot but mine is mostly brown matter. I think the chickens mixing it up daily helps keep it from getting too hot, but deep layers will get hot and need to be physically turned

Just a cost cutter idea yoi chould of just drilled quarter inch holes all over the bottom 😊😮
@FastGardeningMichigan10 ай бұрын
True. But the metal being thinner and stronger gives it a cutting action for the stubborn bits. Especially when I need to use my hand to rub it in to break it up. Mostly to sift potting soil. The fibers are a pain. For chicken compost holes would work great.
