1st of all, I was blown away by your contrairption! It looked like a severe overkill on the cover photo, but the more I went through the vid, the more I liked it. Definitely the best of its kind I've seen so far! And regarding some price concerned comment- I've been living close to Barcelona for a couple of years, before that one year in Andalucia. And believe you me when I tell you (commentators not living in Spain) that houses here are not only badly insulated (like Ian's bought cooler box) but virtually not insulated at all. Meaning, whenever you try to take a nap during the day (working shifts or partying the night before) in one of the many one- storey- buildings around here, you have to get seriously drunk so as not to mind the like 45 degrees indoors until sundown. Since in Barcelona an estimate of 30% of the inhabitants steal their electricity one way or another, if you want to get by as a honest person the price for electricity is so darn high that you think like thrice about leaving the aircon on 24/7. If you even have one- the house I've been living in for the last half year does not. Means, last summer I was usually unable to get some sleep before 5 am, as by then temperatures had fallen below 35ºC. I'd tried to build an aircon with a similar idea, using a styrofoam cooler box that costs like 5€ plus a 10€ 120v fan but it didn't do virtually anything. Guess I'll try it next time with some higher grade components and kinda imitating your design. A fridge is something you find in any spanish house, and icing over the bottles during the day is no sweat at all... thanks for sharing your brilliant invention, looking forward to seeing more of it! Living in Spain in the summer is hot, living in Extremadura in Spain in the summer is extremely hot...... I know what you are suffering my friend and I am very sorry for your predicament. I agree with you about the addition of a bit of alcohol to help with the situation now and then...... It works here too...... Luckily I live in a rural area without much traffic but I don't want to dwell on that as I know your situation isn't so good my friend...... Make the unit...... it does work, it will help you reduce your heart rate in that hectic city of yours and please show me it when you have finished...... Good luck...... Your...oops, forgot I am on KZbin...You're vision to see value in the detritus of society and your talents in fabricating and constructing useful products from it is truly an inspiration. In came here iso a low tech approach to cooling our tent while camping. But this is not why I called...incidental to viewing this video of your AIRCONtraption is that WHOLLY MOLLY absolute overkill sound system and space shuttle command module against the wall in the background. Back in my day, and indeed I'd hazard a guess it's our shared past era, we considered ourselves audiophiles. The reel to reel tape machine gave way to the 11" vinyl albums and the countless iterations of turntable/stylus combinations. The home cassette deck and concomitant cassette player/FM radio for our cars demanded a 12 to 18 month turnover in technology. This in turn led most of us to bigger, better, newer, newest, most advanced systems to even consider ourselves truly civilized modern men of the world! Wonderful to see someone carry the spirit forward in modern electrics! At least I assume your...YT vernacular again!...not doing that system in vacuum tubes! Any chance you'd..ah, hell with the joke already!...give some specs? again, mahalo. Aloha.

Hi Don Perry, First of all I am really sorry for the massive delay in me replying to your wonderful comment...... I am really impressed that you noticed the great quality Pioneer, early '80's "Communication Series" I have in the background. I bought it new back in 1983 whilst I was in the army in Germany...... It all still works perfectly and you can see all the specs on another channel I have. I am sure you will like the music coming out of it as well...... Just put in "pioneer communication series" and you will see (and hear) some of my units playing, it was my very first video taken on an iPod so it's pretty basic but I know you will get the message my friend...... I also write down all of the specs if you click on the "SHOW MORE" link just below the video, the specs are also noted during the early parts of the video...... I hope you enjoy it. Hi there Mrkhm1988, Thank you very much for your kind words and your inquiry...... There is no need for a water pump in my unit as the system is run by air flow only...... What happens is the warm air in the room is drawn into the fans and once in the unit the air flows over the ice bottles and then finally out through the three directional air holes at the other end of the unit...... I believe this system allows you to have a much longer cooling period rather than the pump system used in a evaporative/swamp cooler...... They are both good systems but for my purposes this one is more useful due to its mobility...... I have some more projects coming up shortly so please keep an eye out on my channel...... What a cool little a//c machine you got there. You should patent the design and start selling them, I bet you would make a bundle. Sell them for like $70-80 dollars and they would be much cheaper than buying a portable a/c unit and you don't even need to vent the exhaust out the window.

With reference to the battery. When I use this unit in my cabin up the hill I charge the battery beforehand and it will last the whole weekend and plus some more. I would imagine with a full charge and only using this unit and maybe a couple of lights off it then I would think it should last about a week before needing recharging...... When I use the unit in my cabin I connect it to the 12v supply that comes from the panels into a 30amp Steca charge controller that is already set up in the cabin. However, I could directly connect the panel to the battery...... I have a 35w panel that I connect directly to my car battery to charge or top it up so there is no reason why I couldn't do the same here...... michael navalta Hi michael, Thank you very much for your question and a very good one it is. I haven't tried dry ice but I would imaging it being pretty successful. I have used one and a half litre bottles. and on other occasions I have used ice cubes, cold water and finally ice blocks. I find the bottles really good.

Hi there speedlearner, Thank you very much for your question...... I would imagine if I placed them directly, or extremely close to the ice then eventually they would deteriorate...... However, you need the airflow on between the ice and the fans so that would never happen in my case...... I would leave a good air gap between the two for a better result alround...... Hi again Aaron, Well the room I am in whilst doing the video is six metres by five metres and it cools that down just fine...... You can build this machine for under 200 dollars...... The expense is the fans at around $25 each, the cool box was around $20 and the power inverter was $44...... All the other components were very cheap and can also be bought through Amazon...... +OB Want Hi QB Want, Thank you very much for your questions.AIRCONtraption is a portmanteau which is where you combine two or more words together. In this case 'aircon' as in 'air conditioner' and 'contraption' as in an unnecessarily complex machine, gadget or invention.What's in the box...... You can put either iced bottles, ice cubes, ice packs or just very cold water...... it is up to you...... I find that the iced bottles last the longest......I hope this helps in answering your questions and thanks once again for your questions......

+Ian Wills Thanks for your answer. I think ice bottles last longer because they are bigger in size, holding the temperature better and the best is the cost is lower compared to ice or ice packs. But I see your invention is quite costly because you use cooler box, custom made wood, converter, industrial fan and a battery. I can buy a cheap windows unit with that amount of cost and work. Cooler box has not much difference when you keep blowing external air to the internal of cooler box. The battery will be worn out very fast and if you use this equipment frequently, the battery will breakdown very fast. Reduction of material will make this a whooping good invention.

+OB Want Hi QB Want once again...... As I have previously mentioned, It's obvious that Ice bottles are the best for this kind of contraption...... It is costly to make but not costly to run and not because of the cooler box. That cost me 16 euros. Do you think that is costly...... Custom made wood. This was all scrap wood that was free from my local carpenter so no cost there, work and glue but not cost...... Inverter, cheap fans and a battery all from previous projects. Your last comment makes me realise that unfortunately you don't understand the concept of this AIRCONtraption unit and I am sorry for that but I very much appreciate your interest my friend......Good luck to your future projects......

unfortunately all of the ice you used for this had was in a freezer but the freezer acted as a heat pump and pumped all of the ices heat into the house so it kind of is more of a equilibrium device unless you use the freezer outside

Dean Walcott Hi Dean, Thank you very much for your very good point. I do understand where you are coming from but the concept for this particular unit was mainly to use it in our weekend or holiday home up the hill which doesn't have electricity. The general idea is to fill it up with the iced bottles and fully charged battery, then drive up the hill to our hut out in the sticks on a hot summers Saturday and party throughout the day and night and come back late Sunday afternoon. For this purpose it is extremely useful. In our house during the week we do not use it at all. We always have a freezer full of the ice bottles which keeps the freezer at a constant temperature. I believe that the freezer is acting more efficient whilst full of these frozen bottles rather than empty. I know whilst placing a water bottle in the freezer initially it then generates heat outside and uses energy but being surrounded by other frozen bottles it doesn't take long to get down to freezing point. I do see your point though and thank you once again for your comment.

Technically, the heat is simply exchanged from your area to the room with the freezer. Remember to factor in the initial power required to make the ice.

+The Sqoou Hi The Sqoou, Thanks very much for your interesting comment. and yes you are correct, I am only dissipating the hot air in my room through my unit and passing it over the bottles and then expelling the cold air out through the three vents...... When it comes down to it, the initial freezing of the bottles is a little costly I admit. However, we often have over 40 degrees C heat here in Extremadura so it's well worth it for the comfort factor...... Thanks again for your great comments and best regards......

i would definitely use 12 VDC fans. More energy efficient (nearly 50%), no inverter needed. I suppose your speed control may be a reason but otherwise, 12VDC seems more viable especially when adapting to solar power.

+Larry Hunt Hi Larry, Thank you very much for your commets. I have tried the 12v DC fans and found them to not be powerful enough. The wattage output of these two fans is very minimal...... However, I do see your point about not having to use an inverter...... To be quite honest, the speed controller was not really necessary, just a bit of 'bling' really. I always have it on full blast when using it but I suppose on a lower setting then the ice would last a little longer...... I do take your point and I cannot argue with you as it is very valid and I thank you very much for making it...... Thanks again for your great input Larry...... Watch out for the next one...... use P/N AD1212HB-F93GP FOR your fans 12v 1.95A they push lots of air. get rid of that power inverter there is nothing "efficient" form converting DC to AC = power loss. A 12v 35 AH Deep Cycle battery for mobility scooters will work just fine plus they are cheap. but if you want to keep it AC use a Variable Frequency Drive power controller. but great video friend. i my self love to build things too.

permanent highxX Hi again, Yes you could use this in your car but if you do then please make sure your engine is running whilst using it as your battery will be flat if you just run it off your car battery. The reason is because a car battery is purely to start your car only, everything then runs off the alternator. However, with this system, although the same 12v as your car 12v you would need something like a marine or leisure deep cycle battery which is made for the purposes of covering the needs of what you would normally use your 220v or in America 110v...... I hope this helps......

Hi rene, thank you very much for your question. First of all and as I mentioned in this video, please do not use a car battery as they are only meant to be used to start the vehicle up. They have a completely different structure to a deep cycle leisure or golf cart type battery. A leisure battery is used in the day-to-day running of electrical items in caravans, motorhomes and boats etc., using one of these would be much more efficient. A caravan would normally use the battery for things like lights and water pump etc., in this case a fully charged 85Ah leisure battery should last well over a weeks camping...... There are also different types of leisure batteries, I believe the higher the ampere hours the more battery life you will get out of it. There is a calculation that you can do to understand how many hours the battery will last and this is an example, if you change the figures below to suit your particular battery then you will get the results that you want: First of all, for example, a 100Ah battery = 1 amp of electricity for 100 hours. Therefore if you divide the wattage of the fans (in my case 2x15w) by 12 (voltage of the battery) = ampere usage. Then divide the amp hours of the battery by the amps used and this will give you the number of hours the battery will last, in theory. e.g., in my case, if I used my 110Ah battery with these two 15watt fans these would be the results...... First............ 30w (fans) divide by 12 (volts) = 2.5 Second...... 110Ah (battery) divide by 2.5 (amp usage) = 44 continual hours. I hope I have explained this to you sufficiently and I'm sorry it is a bit long winded. If you need any more information then please just ask. Nitroschock Hi Nitroschock. Thank you very much for your comment.If I used a car battery for this AIRCONtraption unit I agree that it would drain quickly. However I do use a deep cycle marine battery which is made for the purposes of camping and using lights, TVs and radios etc.Even this would drain eventually and you should never allow your battery to drain to less than 50% of its capacity.In my weekend get-away up the hill I check on the battery power on a regular basis and when it starts to get a bit low I give it a boost with my solar panels. I could take a small generator up the hill to help as well but I haven't needed one so far.It has worked for us very well so far and although the system is far from perfect, it is pretty efficient when you are dealing with over 40 degrees C(100+ F).I do value your comment and you do have a very good point. Hi Alex, Thank you very much for your comment and yes you are right, the power inverter does use a bit of energy but all in all it's worth it for the results...... That's if you use AC 220v with it...... I tend to use it more on DC 12v power through my solar panels, charge controller and the battery...... Hi again glenn porche, Thanks also for this informative comment. Yes it is a vehicle battery as that is all I had at hand at the time...... If you watch the whole video you will note that I mention the fact that this battery is not the one you should use for a unit like this as it would drain very quickly, as you will know a car battery is only used to start up the vehicle. I used to have caravan deep cycle leisure batteries at 110 Ah but they were very old and past their sell by date if you know what I mean...... Have you looked into crysterling sealed cylinders? You could make a pykrete cold sink. No need for ice! ; )

You could put in an underground insulated cistern to house your cryosterling pykrete cold sink to run the cooling needs for your home. You could put a wrot counter sink in a pond or cistern to strip off the heat before the liquid enters the pykrete cold sink to start the cycle all over again. This should help your cooling and heating needs yes? = )

Take a copper coil and flatten it leaving the ends tubular. Cut flat copper flashing that can take the now flattened copper coil. Fill the copper coil with water and freeze it. This will help the coil from pinching has you form your spiral using the copper flashing. Then fuse the spiral to the flashing. He compares the wattage of the minisplit AC in his house to the wattage of his unit, but then later says he cools the bottles he puts in this unit in his fridge. So whatever cooling this unit accomplishes is a result of the wattage consumed by his fridge, which he doesn't include in his comparison. Considering that his fridge isn't designed for that job, its safe to say that the efficiency claim is total bunk. This isn't an air conditioning, the whole video is misleading and it likely doesn't cool very well.

It would be much cheaper to use an electric air conditioner powered by a small generator. You are going to use a lot of energy making ice. You need one ton of ice per day to get the same cooling as a 12,000 BTU electric air conditioner

I accept that it is not an air conditioner but to get people to view your efforts on KZbin you need to place that kind of expression in the title of your video. I don't apologise for that because I would hope that would allow for people who want to view similar mobile type items to possibly pick some ideas up for their projects. I also accept that it is nowhere near the perfect solution. However, we have 40 degrees Celsius or 104 degrees Fahrenheit here at the moment and it's only 08:22am. This contraption was built for my personal use to allow for a comfortable day in my cabin up the hill on the weekend which has no electricity. When we party up in the cabin I don't have any complaints from my friends and family who seem to have a great time despite the heat. I am sorry that you don't like the concept or maybe my reasoning for building it but the fact is that it works well for our needs. It definitely needs a lot of improvement but it may help some other inspiring inventers out there to take one or two of my ideas for their projects. J IJzer Hi again, I accept whatever you are saying and I apologise if you feel I have misinterpreted my contraption. I only showed it on KZbin to allow for other people to maybe take some of my ideas that have not been seen before. For example, the things I have not seen on KZbin with this kind of concept are:1.) Variable speed control......2.) Dual voltage AC/DC......3,) The shaping of the top to allow better air flow......4.) Ease of mobility......5.) Battery indicator......6.) USB socket......7.) 12v cigarette type output......8.) Individually switched fans, i.e. use either one or both...etc., etc. ......These maybe on KZbin but I haven't seen them yet. As I say, I put it on to hopefully offer ideas for other peoples projects. Anyway, re-solar power. in my cabin I have a small panel on the roof which is permanently fixed there for basic lighting. Sometimes when I get there I unplug the battery and plug the panels cables into the box. Especially if I am there for a couple of days. In answer to your question regarding how long I run it, please refer to the answer I gave to 'rene kensin' one month ago, just a bit further down the page. I hope that will answer your question sufficiently. Regarding the size of the place I cool down. I only use it in one room, however I have the internal doors open to allow for the cool air to escape to the hall bathroom and bedroom. The room size is six meters by five meters. I don't feel that it's so pricey if you appreciate the comfort, pleasure and satisfaction it has given to me and a lot of my partying friends on my upper outside terrace in mid Summer over long periods of time. If you weigh all that against the initial outlay then I would say it was really financially worthwhile building it. Some people argue that it is not very efficient due to the fact that you have to freeze the water initially and at cost to get it to really work well. In a sense they are quite right, however, when one can get up to twenty four hours worth of really cold air out of it in extremely hot conditions then I feel it is definitely worth the cost and effort. Hay how about a solar vacume tube set up with liquid metal to make a space heater? You could make a bigger one and run the lava liquid metal through a copper heat exchange coil and run a booster fan to heat your home and generate the electricity to run that booster fan all at ounce. Right?
