I made a similar proofing box years ago with a couple modifications. I purchased a small pet lizard heating pad from Amazon. I carved out just enough of a side opening on Styrofoam for a piece of plexi glass from a dollar store picture frame for a peek a boo window to check on rise without opening box. I used school glue to secure. It's still in really nice condition. No mold because like you said keep door ajar when not using.

Good idea, i would use my seed starting heat pad. It has a thermostat on it to maintain any temp you set it to.

Very similar to my Styrofoam egg incubator. It's got channels on the bottom to hold water, a heating element, a wire rack, very accurate waffer thermostat, and plexiglass window's.

I'm going to have to put this together. I always bake cold days, but when I want to bake bread, the damn cold throws off my proofing. Thanks for the tips man!

One thought, get a timer for the heating pad, so it can auto shut off after a certain time. Or, get an integral thermostat.

Why not use the oven with a low watt bulb and pan with water for moisture if desired?

I use the same without heating pad. Just a cup with boiling water is enough.

I like to proof between 84-87 F. Sometimes put the box inside sometimes out. Sometimes water sometimes heating pad. All depends on abmient. Today was 87 & raining out, the covered porch was perfect!

Great video. An ignoramus asks... at what stage do you use this? Mix your dough, fold it two or three times over and hour and a half - then put it in the box for a few hours to proof? Have I got that right?
@jackbquick123 Жыл бұрын
Really depends on what kind of bread and hydration on when and how to knead and proof.
@precognizant Жыл бұрын
yes, you would combine your ingredients initially (flour, water, yeast) and then let it proof/rise for a bit. usually then u knead the dough and go back in for a 2nd proof before u shape & bake 😊😊

Baker here! Bread doughs and donut doughs that I use at my bakery are proofed during their rising period, effectively doubling the size of the dough and cutting the rise/rest time in half. While also making the dough much more soft and plaiable, less dense as a result. It allows the entire process to become much faster! Hope I could help!

I'm confused about the cup of boiling water. First he says to put it in the box at the beginning. Then later he says he doesn't recommend putting in boiling water as it cuts down on fermentation time. Which is it? (Please help a learner.)

Put the dough in the microwave with the warm water. There is your proofing box.
@arlenemurphy8048 ай бұрын
That has worked for me. Or using an instant pot on yogurt ,less setting.
@BeachPeach201010 ай бұрын
Just stick it in the Microwave with a jug of hot water and shut the door. Don't turn it on. This works great for incubating yogurt as well. No extra crap is needed and most people have a micro. Problem solved.

Styrofoam illegal in San Diego County and California. We are run by the Chinese, oh sorry, Gavin Newsome
@ryanloxley Жыл бұрын
The Chinese made styrofoam illegal?
@GulfCoastGrit Жыл бұрын
@@ryanloxleyLol, nah. OP is being hyperbolic. Make no mistake, Newsom is a giant neoliberal. He and CA state legislature are a lot more concerned with looking after big business than they are concerned with regular folk. These ordinances are all local efforts done over time. So far there are about 130 cities or counties that have banned polystyrene (Styrofoam) from being sold or distributed. In some places, you can't bring the containers to public parks or beaches. It's mainly been grassroots lobbying going back to the 90's to get these ordinances in place. At this time, there is no state-wide ban on polystyrene. It's a civil infraction aimed mostly at businesses. It does suck since the containers are a lot cheaper than paper containers and a lot of the paper containers have a plastic lining on them. It's still better than pure polystyrene but we have a ways to go considering how much waste we all generate day-to-day.

I’ve just been turning my oven light on and I use a spray bottle. Every 20-30 minutes blast it with a spray of warm water. BUT I am looking to up my game. I only have one oven. So if I’m proofing in it I can’t bake.
