People who burn a lot of candles always wondering what to do with all those remnants could use this idea instead of throwing them away.

If you don't feel like shaving wood use hamster bedding. It's made out of wood shavings and chips. You can also use a candle warmer to melt the wax.

I don't know why but I found it incredibly enjoyable to see a young lady jazzed about fire starters, but I did. Informative as all-get-out too! Honestly, those are the best homemade fire starters I've ever seen. Hands down the best DIY KZbin video! Or should I say, "The rest can't hold a candle to you?" I was trying to get some inspiration for some fire starters I'm going to make for my youngest daughter who has really been getting into backpacking recently. Great job, my dear. Merry Christmas, peace.

Seeing this I do wonder if another version might work as well or better. That would be instead of putting the shavings in an egg carton, instead grouping them up into a small bundle and tying them with a natural fiber string and dipping them into the wax. It might be a little less messy as they could be set on foil, and the ends would be more spread out, but the center would be more concentrated for when the fire got going more, in theory. Very neat idea though!

Instead of cutting wood shavings I just take the top of the carboard egg carton you tear off and tear it into strips. Then fill the individual spaces with that. I use crisco instead of wax. I wrap one in aluminum foil (so it doesn't make a mess) and leave it in my vehicle in case of emergency.

We did this with the cub scouts. When the boys got older and were cold camping I saw the zip lock bags come out of the back packs. We used dryer lint as well as cedar shavings I had for my chickens. if you don't put them in bags, your get home bag will get messy in the summer when they melt. I also live in the pacific northwet.

Learned something similar with sawdust and wax, paper egg cartons in the early 70's in Boy Scouts and it's obviously much older than that. They work GREAT! You can research how to add material so that a fire steel will ignite them. I just use a match, but I've made some that will burn an easy 20 minutes, will guarantee a fire no matter how wet the wood. Fun video!
@wordman2537
@wordman2537 2 жыл бұрын
I just dip jumbo cotton balls into melted wax and form them into cubes. Cut them open or use your fingernails to open it and a firesteel will work great. You can also just put a flame to it and it'll eventually go up.

Here's a more petroleum free alternative (unless it's beezwax its petroleum. ) Get some pine fatwood, make shavings and sawdust from that. Get some pine pitch , melt that down. mash all that into some frazzled jute twine, (dollar store) which will also take a spark if you fray it up around the edges. Ignite, then take the small fatwood slivers and put on top. Total jet. What sucks about parrafin is breathing it in. You could also melt it all into your paper egg carton thingies.

Alternately? leave the egg carton at home and bring a dozen cotton bore patches/makeup pads and a sheet of parchment paper. Much less room in your pack, save the knife, no splinters, and can be lit by just a spark from a striker. Just dip the pad in the wax and remove promptly after it saturates and let dry on the paper. Dries hard with no mess. Simply break in the middle and tear it in half and strike one. That's 24 per dozen pads, long burning and twice the bang for your buck while being an easier to pack item.

Same thing works using dryer lint. Lint takes a ferro-rod spark better than large wood shavings, but doesn't burn as long. Maybe a combination of both would make a better version.

If you camp for a week and you put out your fire after breakfast, after you have lunch, after you have had your dinner and went to bed you will need AT LEAST 21 fire starters. THESE TAKE UP A LOT OF SPACE that other fire starters don't need especially when you are using a butane fire starter to light it. WHY not carry a small ziplock of the wax and cotton fire starters and/or carry TWO butane fire starters instead of the one? They would take up far less room. SMELLING GOOD isn't important when you want to start a fire.

When candles no longer burn at my house I cut them out of the jars cut into small pieces and use in the oil burners or bag and use as fire starter then wash and clean the jar and use for storage, or painting , they also work great for plant starter covers. . Use your imagination everything has another use . Even bread ties. Burnt out light bulbs makes beautiful Christmas bulbs . Glue glitter ribbon, the grandchildren and I made their Mom a whole set of light bulb tree bulbs , we even got my paints out and what a mess but the kids had a blast . They came up with beautiful pictures that they drew and painted on the bulbs . Mom well she loved them and still has , you would have thought they cost a million dollars, they did hand prints on canvas, it is time to do those again their hands are much bigger now . Another easy fire stater toilet paper rolls, flatten cut into approx 1 inch strips place , take old candles melt , take your toilet pâté rings place in candle wax. Once covered and soaked in remove let cool place in plastic zip lock bag, fold to fix your backpack , works great . I have them everywhere for you never know when you may need one to keep warm also in the vehicles.

I make my own when i need to burn brush piles. I like burning when its wet or snow covered as i have woods near me. I do wax, cotton swabs separated into fibers, then birch bark and shavings, hemp cord, and then shavings from a ferro rod. I use jar lids or snuff cans, pour a little wax to coat the bottom, then put the filler in, then pour the wax. I use a lot of wax cause i am trying to keep a flame going while its wet or wet conditions. Remember to leave a couple wicks of hemp cord sticking up. Mine have burnt upwards of 30 minutes or more.
