Just a 'small' tip. Crushing up the activated carbon in a motar'npestle or ball mill would yield a higher surface area of carbon and thus end up being more effective in filtration

The important surface area of the pellets is actually in the micropores and internal surfaces of the activated charcoal pellets, which can have anywhere from 300 to 1200 square meters of surface area per gram of pellets (the weight of a paper clip) (Source: "Transport Processes and Separation Process Principles" by Geankoplis). That means an amount of activated carbon weighing as much as 5 to 16 paper clips would have about the internal surface area of a football field. Each square nanometer of that football field could catch a molecule of spray. That's about 1% of a mole of spray molecules, but that's a conservative estimate. If you want to recharge the activated carbon, heating it up allows the adsorbed material to escape, thus preparing it to adsorb again. Just don't be nearby when the stuff comes out of your carbon. Maybe use a solar oven to heat it outside... On a windy day. Hopefully it releases slowly. Chemical engineering is a fun field :).

I am genuinely impressed at how well those worked, well done guys! I thought I would point out that one of the reasons military regulations insist that soldiers stay clean shaven is so that gas masks will create a total seal with their face. Civilians with beards are advised to either store an electric razor with their gas masks, or a large container of Vaseline. There is an Israeli company that makes gas masks for dogs, and in their instructions they say to shave/ trim all of the hair around the dog's neck where the mask will be creating a seal. Just food for thought.

I can make this better! First, use furnace filter instead of cotton (it costs like $2 per sheet and you only need one). Then with the carbon grind it to a finer powder. That filter will stop it from getting thru and it is designed to let the maximum amount of air thru. Also, furnace filter is sold everywhere duct work is (ace, hardware store, Home Depot, menards, resale shop, goodwill, etc.) E: I wrote this 4 yrs ago when I was 18. God I sound pretentious.

As an action medic with a fair deal of field experience volunteering at political events where mace is often used - there are urban legends that need to be cleared up around maalox as treatment for OC. It *is* a useful tool when applied properly. It is *not* a miracle cure and should *not* be taken as a substitute for other treatment. Liquid antacid solution provides fast-acting but *temporary* pain relief from OC. It does *not* permanently denature capsaicin, nor will it remove it from your skin any more effectively than ordinary water. Liquid antacid solution should only be used for immediate pain relief before removing the OC resin with grease-cutting soap (If available; if not, with liberal amounts of clean water) as quickly as possible. Too many people assume that they're fine after applying maalox then wind up in even worse pain when it wears off and the OC has had time to work into their pores, at which point it's nearly impossible to wash off.
@tunjet17075 жыл бұрын
LamiaDomina thanks for the info but i’m now concerned about something: if it’s too late and it actually gets impossible to wash off, will it be stuck in your pores forever? a friend of mine “pranked” me and sprayed pepperspray in my face a while ago. I washed it as you said with grease splitting soap, but when i take a shower or my face gets wet, there are times that i feel like the thing is still there and the water activates it, and i’m not sure if it’s because of that or for a different reason

First off, huge fan. Second, damn good masks. Third is a couple of tips from research and a couple of people I know who've experimented with similar things: - Surgical sponges allow a better freedom of airflow while maintaining the padding effect. - The less movement from the charcoal the better, though a dense pack is obviously going to restrict flow. - Unless you have a baby-face (I say this as a fellow of the bearded brotherhood) then nothing short of a full head mask is going to provide a full seal.

Another way, to improve design would be, to create separate exhaling hole, to make breathing easier and to prevent re breathing of carbon dioxide. Basically, you could do it by cutting a hole in the mask and seal it with a peace of balloon rubber, from outside. So, the rubber flap seals the hole when inhaling and opens when exhaling(just like regular gas masks).
@carolynmmitchell22406 жыл бұрын
3rdHalf that's called a one way valve, and good idea.
@carolynmmitchell22406 жыл бұрын
3rdHalf the king of random has a video about making a one way valve using a marble and PVC pipe with a rubber gasket that the marble falls on top of.. I think it would be alot more sturdy then a rubber flap. Shit if I was designing a really nice mask I would use the solid state tesla one way valve, then you would not hear the flaps or whatever opening and closing and there would be no points of failure.
@boxcarz5 жыл бұрын
@@carolynmmitchell2240 The tesla valve only makes flow slower in the other direction, but doesn't stop it. You have to have moving parts if you're dealing with, say, phosgene. Though, I wouldn't trust a homemade gas mask with protecting me from an acutely poisonous gas anyway...

Brillant! I love this video; however I would have done it slightly different. I would have used powered activated charcoal mixed with water containing colliodal silver. Next I would have saturated cotton gauze in the mixture and hanged it up to allow to dry. Then I would have layered the infused gauze in the can. I believe you hearing the pellets rattling is an indication that you were creating large enough gaps for a small amount of gas to rush pass the pellets unimpeded. The colloidal silver should keep the gauze sterile while drying and give you added protection from biological warfare as well.
@user-yl4hb8dg9l5 жыл бұрын
the problem is that you forgot to pad the charcoal down. When you breathe in, the charcoal "dances around", and that is bad because now your airflow is bigger in between the pellets because of the bigger spaces between the pellets. That is also why it works better when you inhale slowly, because the pellets arent dancinng around so much

They mentioned videos of other people being sprayed with the gas in the open. That is enough of a control, if you believe that such things happened.

Shouldn't you be using carbon powder instead of pellets?
@kortax55598 жыл бұрын
Wouldn't the powder fall through the air holes?
@thkiller18 жыл бұрын
Jacob Andrews Don't know about this setup. Powder is usually preferred due to it's larger surface area -> it works as a better filter.

The charcoal filters were gas mask used in WW1, you would have a large can with the charcoal with a tube connected to the mask

Fun fact, tear gas can't be used in warfare as it is deemed a chemical weapon and so is unethical. However it is perfectly legal to be used against protesting civilians. Sound about right to me?
@LastBastion8 жыл бұрын
more like riot mob tbh, even rubber bullet is still hurt a lot and can be lethal at close range. blank ammo still hurt a lot tho.
@Embattled52118 жыл бұрын
Michael Edlin The reason it's vanned in warfare, because the rules were made EXTREMELY general on PURPOSE. They know that if the rules were too specific, then there may have been technicalities that were legal, but against the idea of the law. (ex. a liquid that turned into gas after exposure to hot climate, that contained unconventional toxins, like red phosphate. Would be just as legal as this tear gas, but a mich deadlier effect on the soldiers.)
@MichaelEdlin5428 жыл бұрын
That makes sense actually! Still a bit weird the whole concept of it, but that would explain it
@Embattled52118 жыл бұрын
Michael Edlin I suppose it's a counter to the popular argument against the 2nd Ammendment right to bear arms. "They didn't know we would have these types of weapons".

Hey you messed up you should crush the charcoal so there is more surface area to obsorbe
@Maxxplayne8 жыл бұрын
that might block the air flow..

The reason I said to crush the charcoal was to add surface area to bond to but the blocking airflow thing may be a slight problem

needs an exhale valve (a woopy cushion flap should work for this, also needs a valve for the intake) also crushing up the charcoal (this will require a better particulate filter on top and bottom) and making a larger filter can for more surface area and ease of breathing.

You need to have the activated charcoal very fine and compact to prevent the chemicals from slipping through, an exhale valve could help as well
@Duck-mm6jp6 жыл бұрын
How to tell if it’s compact enough is checking if you can hear it clanking in the filter
@ModernRogue6 жыл бұрын
the exhale breaths seemed to flow out over the cheekbones rather well... as soon as we started inhaling, the seal would re-establish nicely.
