Homemade Gym Chalk Experiment

This is the oddest thing. All of this is the same mix but the extra hard pieces were blended in a blender and the rest were just sifted. If you notice, the blended pieces shrink a ton and they are extremely hard to crush. I’m not sure what I am missing in my recipe that makes the chalk react this way. I’m looking for a smooth, soft texture and while I am getting the smoothness, I am having a hard time achieving the softness. I have added calcium carbonate to the mix to try to soften it and it didn’t seem to help. I have another batch that I am working with and we will see how that goes.
Give me your thoughts. What do you think is happening that’s causing the blended gym chalk to shrink and harden? 🤔

Never tried it but I’ve read a bunch of comments that said baby powder to soften, maybe that would help? I think there might even be a community post on Alz’s page that lists what can soften a mix. Thanks for all you do, always posting great content! ❤

Maybe you should add liquid detergent and baby powder to the blended mix to see if it will soften up, this looks very beautiful by the way

Blending is breaking the particles down too much, so they are binding more closely together. That is the easiest, most broken down answer. For soft, smooth, you want gym chalk and corn starch. More corn starch will make soft and smooth. Less will make crispy and/or crunchy.

Maybe the blended chalk doesn't need to be dehydrated as long? In another creators videos, they noted that fresh gym chalk put in a dehydrator makes them crunchier

With the blended mix, if its thick then maybe add more water. Its losing more moisture and shrinking since its a finer mix (not an expert, just thinking out loud). Maybe some cornstarch/baby powder to soften. I guess it depends how crunchy v soft you want it?

Maybe the blender is taking the air out of it? I dunno science too well, maybe the sifted chalk is still light and airy whereas the blender takes all the air out maybe

Try adding dish soap. I know of other artists that when blending will add the soap to keep it soap and crushable
