That block of granite has already been squared before it got on the machine...how well would it split stone on irregular surfaces?
@GregsStoneYard
@GregsStoneYard 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Brian, you are right the stone was swan flat on two sides. For granite through a splitter like this the flatter the better for it to split. It's all about getting as much of the blade in contact with the stone as possible. The upper blade will tilt a fair amount, so if the stone has one flat side, that would go on the bottom, and the sloped side would face up so the top blade can tilt. For irregular shaped limestone and sandstone this splitter has no problem splitting it. Much more expensive commercial splitters have top and bottom blades made up of many individual chisels that can conform to an irregular surface, but each one can only move a few inches. If you can tell me what type and or a picture of the stone I can give you a better idea. greg9504@gmail.com

@@GregsStoneYard I have a hydrolic splitter I use on Mica schist primarily occariolally shale limestone or granite. My splitter has the individual cutter that conform to the surface before making the split. I see rental machines for brick and flagstone with a hand pump and I think your design would be very marketable for brick and flagstone industry...get a patent and go to trade shows a take some orders

@@GregsStoneYard The machine I use is called hydra- split , made in St cloud Minnesota It sounds like you have an electric motor pushing the hydraulic pump...if you mount that untit on a trailer and have a generator/ hyrolic press you'd have a real nice unit....like the Miller welders that have a generator build in .

@@brianhanrahan7561 The Hydra-Split are nice machines, those are what I lusted after when I made mine. Do you quarry or do install work? There isn't too much unique about mine, there are plenty of similar designs out there. I will make a new video this summer that shows how it is made. I mostly play around with my diamond wire saw now... Thanks for watching.

1:02 Did your table break? I wish you had a gauge to see how many tons were exerted. Cool device.
@GregsStoneYard
@GregsStoneYard 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Jerry, no the table has a hydraulic piston that raises and lowers. When I split, I turn a valve so that the pressure can bleed off as the stone is pushed down (to expose the lower blade). If I were to build another one, I'd just use some coil springs (like from a car). The hydraulic mechanism is rather complicated. Others have used the springs.

Love the innovation, what would I need to split 4 - 10 inch river rock ?

Have you tried hammer and chisel? I haven't tried a round rock in my splitter. The problem is with the round rock is getting the blade engagement. With a hammer and chisel you can work your way around the stone. Or get a big "Quarry Buster", trowandholden.com/quarry-busters.html, see this video kzbin.info/www/bejne/hXnXXol_eK-qq5I

@@ExploringCabinsandMines The wood splitter may not have enough force. They are typically rated to around 28 tons. My splitter above is 70 tons. You need an upper and a lower blade to concentrate the force. Not sure how well the hammer head would work as a splitter blade.

What's the tonnage of the press. And at what force did the rocks split.
@GregsStoneYard

70 tons as used here, but capable of 100 tons. Unfortunately this video is very old and I don't remember what force these split at. I wouldn't build anything less than 50 tons though.

The easiest way to make one is to find a used "shop press" in the 50 ton range. Then get two 4.5" or larger cylinders, use wood splitter blades (top and BOTTOM) for the blades. You can see pictures of how I made mine at www.carter-engineering.com/stonesplitter.htm
