Oh yes.. There is cold ice, and warm Ice. That's why the ice you buy in those outdoor ice boxes does not last. If you find a store with the ice in the Frozen food case running at -5 to 0 degrees, or even better, the ice cream case operating at -10 to -12 degrees. A lot of C-stores and some newer gas stores keep their ice in these cases. This is the best ice! This guy has a great idea!

Great idea and thank you for the videos! As far as increasing production, i believe refrigerator ice makers run on a timer....so with your colder environment, you COULD decrease the time between dumps (if that is able to be modified) The fact it stays cold and its a DEEP freezer is why the ice never sticks...it never melts. Great job man!

You 'should' pre-cool your coolers before a trip I have heard. Load it up a day before - drain/re-ice before departure. I've done this with cheap coolers - didn't really see any effect. But if you a yeti or other high brand it supposedly works.

LOVE This!!! Very cool. Working in restaurants for many years I have dealt with my share of commercial ice machines and which perform well and the ones that just plain suck... One tid bit I learned a while back was that Ice Machines LOVE ice... meaning the fuller the machine is the faster the cycles can run on the machine. So, I propose a test. Measure 24 hours of production with very little or no ice. Then purchase some bags of ice... (Yes small investment). and make it at least half full. then test 24 hours.... Perhaps having it full with ice will help maintain a full machine stay fuller ... Thanks again... very cool.

There is an adjustment for time in the front cover of the ice makers. You can speed up the prosses if the ice forms well before the dump time. It is a flathead screw under the cover and on some models it has a + and - symbol so you know witch way to turn. Make adjustments half turn at a time or less.
@TKCL3 жыл бұрын
Correct, I looked into that
@MrNiceCobra3 жыл бұрын
robsycko, that screw is regulating amount of water entering icemaker by changing water valve opening time..... There is a sensor molded in the wire and touching the bottom of metal ice form, that will close electric circuit ,when metal ice form temperature will get below 32F(meaning water is frozen in the form and it is time to rotate icemaker motor and dump out ice cubes. So the only way to speed up ice production is to lower freezer temperature.

Great work around! The "standard kitchen refrigerator/freezer ice makers" will make about 10 lbs a day, each. Once the box is cold enough to freeze the water, they run mostly on timed events. You may not gain much with the interior fans, and remember the fan motors heat will have the other effect; heat. Your lash up for the IM kit valves and the freezer is laudable but all that was needed was a plug/cord for the freezer that is rated for 15 amps or more at 110 volts, and it will carry all the loads- IM kits, valves, freezer to the 20 amp circuit you plugged into. I'd also figure our which walls of the freezer have chilling coils in them, some have only one wall cooling, some two almost none three or four, and elevate the box, make hole in the free side with an insulated door where I could swing it aside to scoop out the ice and it could quickly and automatically close. And if more ice is the ticket, install one or two more IM kits. Awesome! I worked on this stuff for a career and it never dawned on me! Awesome! PS; ice sticking together usually means the door gasket has a leak or is being left open too much and air borne moisture is condensing on the ice, which causes the sticking. Seal up your cord passages through the gasket- if you do a rework, run your cords through the "hot wall" and seal them up. Damn, why didn't I think of that- I have wanted something like it at camp for years! And I have the junk to make it from! FR Final PS; You don't need a "pro look", you need "personal snazz"- paint or wrap some "flames of ice" or something you like on it! FR!

Now to surf the internet and see if I can find an ice maker that puts out those saucer shaped ice cubes instead of the kind you and I have now.

@@TKCL if you would, make a post or video on longevity of the ice makers. I had one in a new refrigerator that was replaced 3 times before the warranty went out. I asked the repair man what was causing them to fail so fast. He said it’s mostly due to cheap plastics working in a cold environment. He also said turning down the ice cube size adjustment would probably help out a lot. He ended up being right because the last ice maker went almost 3 years before it died. I’m just curious if the colder temperatures in the deep freezer will have any effect on the lifespan of the ice makers.

Just one of those fans will probably do the job, to more evenly distribute the temperature inside the freezer space. Ice (and anything) can be cooled to absolute zero. Ice can't get WARMER than 32-34 f because it melts. The freezer is doing some unecessary cooling because storing the ice doesn't require 0 f. You could probably save some electricity by running the freezer a little warmer.
@andrewk86363 жыл бұрын
Then the ice is warmer and melts faster. The freezer isn't working much because the ice is keeping a very low temperature already. The freezer only needs to maintain the temperature. The only part it needs to freeze is the water coming in for new cubes. Colder ice cubes last longer in a cooler though the difference isn't as big as people might think.
@J1WE3 жыл бұрын
2 things I think could improve ice production. Unless its a timed thing. 1)Insulating around the ice maker device. Maybe a styrofoam cooler could be utilized. Creating a smaller area for where ice is made. 2) a simple airflow created inside? Some sort of way to have air move around. This is all very wicked though and love the idea. Thanks for sharing Edit* literally made it to this video after watching your last vids. I now see someone offered fans haha

Installing and testing fans today

You could mount the fans in a channel with air holes drilled in it, so the ice level wouldn't affect it. You could make the channel out of two pieces of aluminum attached in a 90 degree angle and place it in one of the corners of the freezer. Mount the fan about 6" from the bottom of the channel and drill air holes in the bottom of the channel that ice couldn't get in to.

Have you reset the timer on them? I've not worked on one in a long time but used to when you put the arm down it dumped water and it stayed in the slots for so many minutes then dumped. There was a gear you could move to make it fast or slower to dumping. U may read up on it . Make lot more ice what they say . Hope it helps

I pulled the end cap off and don't see any adjustments. Luckily my ice size is already quite large. I installed fans this morning and I'm testing production increases.

Was thinking if you mounted the fans parallel, up top or otherwise, it will create a air current that will still get the cold air from the bottom moving across the ice makers. Know you can't mount them lower. Anyway, hope the wood hunt is going good for you and the friend with the OSB hookup can come through. Take care.

Any air movement is better than none, I agree. As for the osb, I had something amazing happen. I'll share that soon

@@TKCL Agreed, I think you'll really see a difference. Know my kegerator started cycling a lot less frequently and the temp stability improved dramatically. Hopefully amazing good on the OSB! Take care.

To help with efficiency get a thick piece of foam insulation to set the freezer on. You lose a lot through the bottom.

Mount them with magnets. 8 on the back wall or the bottom of the lid and then 4 on each fan so they stick together. No screws needed

Awesome idea looks like it works really good, you should tee off your water line and mount a valve to the side to get glasses of filtered water while working in your shop ,just a thought, great job !

Mounting fans, if you have a pipe that is running from the bottom to just next to the ice makers then you can mount the fan on top of the pipe and suck up the cold air to the top of the freezer. I have not done this myself however the theory sounds solid.
@tarawood-bradley21193 жыл бұрын
Another theory would be to attach copper pipes in your freezer like a loop, eventually the copper pipe will cool down and act as a heat/cool transfer agent to cool the air at the top.

I am not sure of adding water with an anti freeze component to help move coolness.

Lets just say I have seen a lot of videos on how refrigeration works and it is a technology that we use in large computer sites to stop computers overheating. There is a crazy video of someone putting a heater inside a fridge to see how far he could push the fridge, lets just say the fridge eventually gave up. I have even see a video of someone using swimming pool as somewhere to dump heat from their water cooled computers.

I got a blower similar to that little blower (search "SparkFun blower") for radon reduction in my basement. They're surprisingly cheap and effective. It's been humming away for months with no fuss. Nice job on the ice maker.

What a really cool, or should I say 'cold' video. No, 'cold' seems too cruel, even though an ice maker is 'cold'. Anyway, just joking around a little. What I mean is, I loved the video. Love you guys and love your channel. Take care and God Bless.
