I miss these kinds of classes. We had both family studies and design and technology in middle school that were mandatory. I remember in design and technology we did woodworking all 3 years, electricity, plumbing, metal work which both my sister and I made cookie sheets in the early mid 90s which my mum still has incredibly stained and etched from decades of cookies. Famimy studies we learned basic sewing, cooking, baking, parenting and nutrition. High school we had both just for grade 9 but family studies was then called parenting and was mostly book work from what I remember. Now I have 1 son who is graduating high school this spring and they've brought back a couple food courses thankfully. My 9th grader knows how to cook basic meals and grill under supervision, he just doesn't have enough confidence in himself yet. The younger kids are in grade 7 and totally a disaster in the kitchen on a good day 😂

Funny story here: I got out all the ingredients to make the hot pockets. I had just stocked the cupboards and fridge and I was ready to go! Made the filling, instead of onion powder and garlic powder I use onion and garlic. Got the chicken cooked and dropped in the cream cheese and dashed to the garden for some chives. Everything was ready to go-until-I went to the fridge and discovered I bought cinnamon rolls instead of crescent rolls. I pondered for a moment and thought about pasta that you had mentioned and then it hit me, I had puff pastry in the freezer. Can I tell you that this went from a disaster to magnificent meal!! Brushed the tops with egg wash and the parm cheese! My family thinks I am a genius, hhahaha!!! Thanks for sharing Becky!

Becky, turn your microplane zester upside down, so you have the back of it facing up. Then drag the zester over the lemon. It is faster and more efficient. Hey Becky, it just doesn’t matter if you have or haven’t peeled the ginger. It does not affect the taste, if you are making a powder after freeze drying it. Hi! I was so glad to see you making these shots! I make a version of this as well. I mix fresh turmeric, ginger, pineapple, mandarin orange, and a little carrot. I also add a little fresh cracked pepper to activate the turmeric. I use a juicer, but definitely you can use a blender and nut bag. This concoction is SO delicious, and amazingly good for your body. I do not peel my ginger or turmeric. I do take all of the pulp I get from juicing and freeze it. I then add the frozen pulp to smoothies for a nice kick of flavor and nutrition! ❤

Idea 💡- What if you blended and separated each ingredient- Ginger, Lemons, Turmeric- individually and then just blended the juices? You'd have the individual pulps to freeze dry! So then You'd get powdered ginger and turmeric and freeze dried lemon powder to make Lemondade with! (Just add water and sugar 😋) Also, what do you think of adding raw honey to the ginger turmeric shots for extra, extra health benefits? (And mostly for sweetness, because WOW!) 💜💜💜

I always chop up the extra parsley, for example, as you only ever need two tablespoons for a recipe and then the rest of the bunch of parsley can be completely redundant, and put it in ice cube trays with a dash of water (run on sentence or what?). Then I can pop the cube in stews or soups. I also do this with tomato paste. Again, most recipes require two tablespoons. So I measure out the two tablespoons, place them in ice cube trays and, once frozen, put them in freezer bags for future use. At which point I feel completely virtuous! Thanks again, Becky for one of your most enjoyable videos. I will definitely try the ginger shot!

I have been making ginger/turmeric/ lemon shots for a couple years now for me and husband and we LOVE them. We do add black pepper but just before we take the shot. They really do give you a boost of energy and kinda clear your mind (sounds crazy but they really do). I started making them with my Vitamix like you did here and quickly moved into an inexpensive juicer that I have been using now for 2 years and is still holding strong. I only pain $50 for it on Amazon. We sometimes get out of the habit of taking them ( that is where I am now) and this is a good reminder to start again so thank you :) They are in my freezer I just need to thaw.

I do something similar with lemon, ginger in honey. Lasts a long time in the fridge. Use the entire lemon; seeds pith and all. All the quercetin is in the pith and seed. So I chop the entire lemon, chop a bunch of ginger, put in jar and cover with honey. Leave out on counter for two to three days then keep in the fridge. The honey thins out with the juices. Watching you scrub the ginger reminded me that my grandmother.....who canned most of the food for her family of 9....told me that she would take all the cukes she was planning on picking and running them through the rinse cycle without spinning in her washer. I did it and it worked great.

You can also use cayenne pepper to activate turmeric, if you prefer that taste. I dried my pulp (unpeeled and well washed; turmeric, ginger, pineapple and lemon) in a very low temp oven overnight. Ground that into a fine powder. I use that powder in my smoothies every morning. 🙂

Take your zester to the lemon ... turn the zester over and put it on the lemon .... that way you see where the zest is and don't have to keep looking at the lemon .... zest comes up inside the zester and is easier to dump into what you are making .... helpful hint from Chef Jean Pierre

I've been making the ginger & lemon shots regularly, always have a batch on the go and stocked up in the freezer in the 4oz jars. I buy a kilo of organic ginger and freeze it in portions enough to make a batch. I add manuka honey to mine, it's such a refreshing drink. Thank you so much for this gem Becky!

Yes, black pepper is necessary to activate the beneficial properties of Turmeric. But in order to make it a little more palatable, you should add a few Tbs of honey just to get through that original batch. It can only help and won't diminish the health benefits at all. GREAT idea to make up these shots & freeze them ahead of time, Becky!

I make this too and it’s a huge hit at Christmas parties bc I make it into a wreath by laying the crescent rolls in a circle with the wide side at the top and then you roll the thin triangle pint over the chicken mixture. I discovered This recipe when my kids were 2 and was always a kid favorite

We have a ginger raised bed. Whenever I need a piece of ginger, I dig down, snip off a piece, and put back in soil. It stays beautifully in the soil. It sprouts in the spring. We snip off some of the sprouts,to chop and ad to dishes. It has multiplied greatly, over the years. It just keeps on spreading. All I did in the beginning , years ago, was purchase a piece of organic ginger, from the grocery store, and dug it down in soil, laid it flat and covered it. It’s just wonderful, knowing I have ginger, whenever we need it.

A helpful tip on zesting citrus. Put the zesting tool on top of the fruit and run it back and forth like a bow on a violin. You can easily see where you’ve removed the zest on the peel and the zest stays on the tool.

I absolutely LOVE your fire cider tonic!!! I have never been able to handle the garlic/onion of regular fire cider but your recipe is amazing! I put a bit of maple syrup in bottom of quart jar, add about a shot of fire tonic, ice and a can of my favorite seltzer (currently mango limeade). SOOOOO good and now I can finally get the health benefits as well.

I have been making similar shots at home for a few months now. I roughly chop the ginger and turmeric in similar quantities and add peeled whole lemons and run them through the food processor and strain. I make enough to last about one week and pour myself a shot every morning. I add a sprinkle of black pepper and cayenne pepper when I prepare them daily. I really feel like they help with immunity, energy levels, and turmeric is an amazing anti-inflammatory. Thanks for another great video. Cheers to your good health!

so looked for how to make shots and I found this as add on to help with more Ingredients And Substitutions: Oranges - oranges add sweetness and help balance the spiciness of the ginger. Any variety of orange works well in this recipe. I usually use an heirloom navel orange (when I can find them) or cara cara orange since these tend to be sweeter. Lemons - add brightness. You can also use limes! Ginger - fresh ginger adds mega health benefits. No need to peel it! Turmeric - fresh turmeric adds even more health benefits. No need to peel it! Black pepper - helps to activate the turmerics' health benefits. We only need a pinch, so you won't even taste it. Water - helps the blender get moving. You may need more or less depending on your blender. If you are using a juicer, omit it.

I juice lemons and ginger and freeze them in silicone ice cubes trays. I pipe them out of the trays and put them in a freezer container. I put them into hot water or tea. I LOVE them! I haven’t tried turmeric but I may have to give it a whirl 😊

I think the idea of freeze drying that liquid would work. Freezing it in ice cube trays, then pop frozen cubes in a plastic bag, would be a space saving way to store them. Just a thought I had is to add to some tea might be yummy😊 The chicken pockets look yummy too.

I have ginger and tumeric growing in fabric pots. They did pretty good last year and I brought them in over the winter and let them die back. I've moved them outside and am now waiting on the green leaves to grow again. I've dug up a small piece of the ginger to check it out and it's rooted and looks (and tastes) amazing! Lots of new tubers and roots and now...bring on the shoots! I'll likely harvest some this fall, once the leaves die back again and bring the rest inside for winter (Zone 7b) and also get them both in larger pots for an even bigger harvest. It's my understanding that if you're patient and allow the tubers to mature, the more tubers you'll get! Sorta like asparagus...but not cold hardy.
