Awesome. I'm not such a big fan of the 12V setup tough. You might be luckier just getting a variable frequency drive and get regenerative DC from the induction motor instead (One it is excited you can also get AC, with much better control than a capacitor bank) From the rectified DC you can use some high quality server power supplies to feed the 12V system. I have one in my EV and they are really nice giving out 50A easily.
@lyndonthan4350 Жыл бұрын
Hi. Very interested in this. Can you tell me more? You are suggesting to use an AC motor as an alternator, with its output feeding into a VFD, correct? The purpose being that with the VFD you can get a constant 60 hz output. But the problem is the output then is square wave. And what are your referring to WRT to 'regenerative DC' ? thanks so much !

i dont know if you are american, but if you have access to VW group older small diesel engines, that would be your best bet in terms of reliability and fuel economy. Like a 1.4 3 cylinder tdi engine is probably the best for a project like this, its small, its light, reliable, and consumes very little fuel, altough I dont think they were sold in NA markets, if not, you can always use a 1.9tdi, altough it will be bigger and heavier, it will still give the same reliability and amazing fuel economy. But anyways good project!

Good job! Geo/Suzuki 1.0 engines that had air conditioners on them had a solenoid on the firewall near the air cleaner that kicked up the idle speed when the AC compressor was running. The little engine would stall without one. The solenoid admits air to the throttle body and has an adjustment thumb screw. You could goose it up to 2000+ rpm at idle with the solenoid energized. Its a ''nothing'' part that might be useful to you.

Sounds very similar to perhaps an older version of the Suzuki's F8D 3 cyl engine. The F8D is MPI though and still quite relevant by todays standards.

Buy surplus 28 volt generator head and run that and a 120 volt AC off of the flywheel end of the engine. That would be more efficient than kluging a bunch of car alternators onto the front. If you want lots of 12 volt amps...go to a school bus weecking yard and grab a 350 amp 12 volt alternator... One belt and you have more current than all of those put together. If you can run the engine at a reasonably low RPM it wont be too noisy but for the power you get into the battery. .you will be burning a lot of fuel. They make PTO generators for farm tractors... Look at how those work. An old welder would also make a potential generator head as would an old wind generator

Use a universal cruise control to run the rpm and an asynchronous generator. It will self synchronize with an existing network also called "Danish concept" and the heat from the engine can be used to heat your house or neighborhood including warm water for showering. Can be very fuel efficient, especially when combine both and you'll get some money for it. Enough working junkyard engines around for that job. Most expensive part is the generator but you could use old train motors

Excuse my ignorance, cause I do not know the answer, but, if you want to load down a conventional ICE as you are doing, wouldn't "the load" better be place on the back end, and not the front, or would that require too much throttling / RPM. i guess it'd need transmission, for speed, but wouldn't it be stronger? @egn83b11 жыл бұрын
Also since your using a computer to run your engine make sure you get the engine light off the system otherwise it dumps too much fuel. Since this thing is not in a car you can get away with some nasty mods because your not dealing with emissions since its stationary. Another thing that can increase run time is heat your fuel before it goes into the engine.
@egn83b11 жыл бұрын
Awesome idea. Since you have junk as a resource you can still make it look professional. The trick is make a wire harness out of existing wire and get some black electrical tape and loom it up. Spend the money and invest in new belts as a safety net. Get some spray paint and sand paper and clean up your nasty motor. This could be a great system. The way to idle up the engine when you add a load is by adding a air bypass solenoid to the intake instead of opening up the throttle so you save gas.

Just curious how you connected multiple alternators, it looks like they are all somewhat modern so I'm assuming they all have the regulator built in. when using a inducton motor, or any other generator for 120 or 230 volts mains power its not only the voltage thats inportant but also the rpm of the generator, holding it on 50 or 60 hertz.(when you use other loads then resistive, or glow bulbs or sery's tipe motors like vac"s or skil saws etc)(those are not frequenty sensitive),
@timothytim908110 жыл бұрын
That's great that you have this scrap and engines to work with, a diesel is more preferred but since those Suzuki engines are free and easy to work on what the heck. If you the run on Syngas gasifier you won't need a throttle body or carb you can run it direct with a ball valve for the RPMs. Have you thought about getting one of those heavy duty Chinese ST generator heads to use with this ?

@dexter24338 жыл бұрын
very cool build nothing better than taking someone's junk and turning into a productive device the one thing i try to tell friends and family is to buy a decent inverter and keep it around the house for emergency power because anyone can take a 1500w 3000w surge inverter and run a few lights and a fan or even use a hot plate to cook food just by connecting it to your car battery now this is not something for any long term solution but if you need emergency lights you can power a couple of led floods off of the inverter with the car at idle allowing it to run off of the power the alternator produces also for short uses you could even power a microwave for say 10 min to cook emergency food and then allow car to recharge battery and if it is super hot at least run a couple of fans i even have a small 400w 800w surge inverter that i have used to power a small single serving electric skillet i have for heating up stew or other single serving helping of foods like i seed it is a emergency resource that you can tap into if you have a simple $50 400w inverter around and inverters do not go bad sitting on shelf in garage 20 years down the road it should work when you need it

Interesting build but why use an electric fan and cooling system instead of mechanical? You are drawing power to run while trying to generate power. That motor has enough power to run enough kW to power an entire street so using up some of the mechanical hp is not a concern. Just not very logical Imop. But I can see the time and effort you put in..
@AaronsAutomotive7 жыл бұрын
john smith i think it was done more so to be able to put the radiator and fan off the side for engine cooling rather than up front to leave easy access to the belts, pulleys, and alternators, along with the safety factor of not having a belt driven fan always spinning right near all of his controls and switches. and the draw on the firefly electric fans is still pretty little.
