@@kalebdye4378 We need to stop the war on drugs, really- at least until there is something to replace them properly. Opiates are one of a very few strong painkillers that are actually effective against any kind of pain. Yes, they are addictive, but proper drug regimen addresses that. If it was just a few years later, when my mum was hospitalized until her death, she'd have been stuck taking painkillers that would have done nothing to help her because they simply aren't strong enough.

Big hats off to the distillery for putting you under their licence and making this able happen. I know how hard it is to get setup and licensed from the Whisky Tribes videos on the matter. Also you should definitely try aging this, or getting an ultrasound cleaner and force aging it with wood chips

They still openly committed at least 1 felony in this by being unlicensed and unsupervised as in their state and it was clearly said that being unlicensed in possession of a still is a felony and I bet you the brewery never put them under their license because they would have to pay the same amount for that little pot that they do for a big still. So let’s be honest they probably got an unwanted visit from the atf

@@bogator0149 I LIVE in a moonshine state, dude. I can go purchase a legal 4 gal still at the hardware store for $85 and have it up & running legally 5 minutes after getting home. Unless you plan on selling it there is no federal restriction against it. In my state if you make too much it's a tax infraction, not a criminal offense. Just because it's illegal in THEIR state doesn't make it so for the other 49. Further just because a crime is a felony that doesn't mean it's a federal crime. It has to fall under very specific circumstances in order to be federal. There is also the fact that MOST states don't have regulations on stills with a volume of less than a gallon, as that could impede genuine scientific & educational work. Most likely they grossly overstated their case to stop people who will watch a video on KZbin who think they are now expert enough do debate something like distillation laws with people who've ACTUALLY dealt with those laws from trying to set up a still

If you want the booze to actually have some sort of flavour you need a leaky distillation setup where some of the unfiltered mixture sloshes over. The cleaner your distillation, the more your final product will resemble pure ethanol and water. Alternately, you can add fruits or herbs after distilling the moonshine and leave them to soak into the booze. If you're boiliong trash, this latter method is probably preferable.

Something the distillery worker didn't mention is that the heads and tails aren't just discarded like the foreshot is (though even that can be kept as it has its uses, such as antiseptic, industrial solvent, as a fuel, or a myriad of chemical processing uses) but are instead kept and added to the wash of the next distillation, so that any trapped ethanol can still be liberated in future runs. Side note, the reason it tasted so funky was probably because they retained some of the heads and tails and didn't just capture the heart of their distillation; that's usually where you get all the funky tastes and smells from with un-matured alcohol. Most long-aged alcohol actually deliberately retains some of the heads and tails, though, because the aging process actually transforms those funky flavours into the complex body of good flavours that we all know and love from our various distilled beverages of choice.

To be clear: home distillation is only dangerous because you're mixing heat and combustible vapours. The amount of methanol naturally produced is not particularly dangerous. It's removed from commercial products mostly because it tastes bad, and because of the huge quantities brewed (and, if you're distilling anything at home, you should also remove it, don't get me wrong. It's just not naturally produced in large quantities) The idea of moonshine making you blind comes from the fact that the US government intentionally contaminated commercial ethanol with methanol during prohibition in order to poison people who tried to make their own drinks from it. It was a revolting act of state-sanctioned violence, not the result of dangerous distillation practices.

Overall interesting idea. The only correction is that you definitely don’t have 100% ethanol. Ethanol forms an azeotrope (constant boiling mixture) at about 95% ethanol to 5% water so if you did a really thorough distillation you’d probably have 95%. If you wanted 100% there chemical methods you’d have to use to remove the final 5% water

Yo I’m the 666th like on the video. Also, Mountain Dew was originally created as a syrup to mix with moonshine. Also you should try making wine later. My parents started make wine before lockdown using plums which were super ripe & almost rotten. They didn’t distill it but just added yeast, water & plums and just fermented it. But maybe later in the series you can make it the old fashioned Greek way.

Ethanol also has a nearly invisible flame, especially in outside light. Indoors you may see a faint blue glow, but sunlight will easily completely outshine it.

You will never be able to make methanol in concentrations strong enough to do damage at home, it is a very common myth. The reason people die or go blind is adulterated alcohol, alcohol that was mixed with a non drinking alcohol.

You're only breaking the law if you. A. Sell it without paying taxes. B. Exceed the Federal limits for production for home consumption. I cannot recall the amounts exactly, but you can ferment so many gallons of wine, so many gallons of beer, and so many gallons ( IIRC ) of spirits. I'll look it up and post the pertinent federal law and the limits.

Unfortunately no. It is illegal to distill alcohol without having either a distilled spirits permit or a federal fuel alcohol permit, and some states still regulate things even more strictly, like disallowing stills. That is why they had to register their still under the brewing company that they were working with this video.

the historical estimation is the original alcohol was not food waste, but instead potatoes that have been sitting in a barrel too long. and moonshine actually uses a grain product called Barley.
