Reminds me of the "Truffle Basket" my Mum had in the 1950's, made from strips of wood. True, there wasn't any glue involved, but there sure were plenty of nails that eventually went rusty and stained it. I think your design is great!

The video was great! You came at the project from a totally different angle and yet not traditional, it looks the part, fits the function and form. I am just wondering if yours is as strong as a traditional basket would be. I can't see it taking the abuse a basket is forced to endure over the years but then again, maybe yours is stronger! When you were putting the actual basket together I was thinking uffda, then as it came together I was pondering if that glue holds the flexing the basket will endure, then it may last just as long as its traditional cousin. Well done and fun to watch how you solve these issues. Loved the jig to sand the short lengths. Finished project looked great.

If your scrap wood challenge series has taught me anything, it's that there's no such thing as scrap wood. Looks great!

Even the smallest pieces can be cut to make wedges, wood nails or patches (provided that the grain is good), not to mention for that moment when you need to prop something up a few cm off the ground or space something, having a bag of scrap wood chunks handy is a life saver.

Not at all.. even wood chips and saw dust is usable. That's what particle board and wood pellets are made from.

Next time you are bending strips like these you can even put a wet cloth between the hot stick and the wood. It will keep the thin wood from drying so quickly and steam also penetrates the wood instanteniously. I am a violin maker and this is how you bend the ribs. Awesome project otherwise, I love it!

Awesome Idea, very good design, great video ! It's a great way to upcycle short pieces of scrapwood... Especially as a guitar maker, I might have quite a few that are already pretty much at the right thickness... And I can't do much guitar related things with them anyway. I'm just reluctant to bring any fire torch in my shop... Still, next Christmas, everyone gets a basket !

Nice work. So good to see you using Camphor Laurel. It is such an under-rated timber. So many people think of it as simply a weed tree and dismiss the timber. On the whole, it is full of character and can be used for many things. It does have some inconsistency I find in terms of density and hardness, but in general, it's pretty cheap anyway, so it's worth the risk - and then it comes down to using the appropriate piece to suit what you want to achieve.

It's a beauty! I use a cheap pine strip woven basket for my spoon-carving stuff, and it's my goal to one day make a nice one. The craftsmanship in the traditional ones is very inspiring.

Excellent video! I've had a similar basket idea floating around in my head for a while, seeing you do it encourages me to make it happen. The hot bar bending with the piece of metal on the outside is a great idea. Wood bends by compressing the fibres on the inside of the bend, if you try to stretch the fibres on the outside of the bend, it will break.

If you ever make another, make the base in the same way you made the two lids before cutting them. If you do that, then you can insert the strips in the sides of that and make the bottom and the line much neater and sturdier. That's how some of the old French panniers i saw when i was a kid used to look like. Tho, those used crushed reeds or something like that for siding with strips as horizontal liners.

I think barrel spacers between the handle screws on the handle would be a good idea. Prevent over tightening (and allowing you to fully tighten) while decreasing friction completely. Cool looking basket!
