I'll start with simple prototypes until I venture into making the organ fully playable. Your videos will be extremely useful to me. Congratulations for your work!

WOW! Art is the best description that I can give to your work. I am really impress. I have acquire 5 ranks of pipes a few years ago, like 30 years or so. I would like to make a wind chest for maybe 3 of the ranks but I still have to start on it. With Haupwerk on computer, I kind of abandoned the idea. I even got the 3 volumes of Dom Bedos on organ making. What a shame that I did not have you on youtube when I was younger. Anyway I am impressed by your work and the sound of your instruments, I beleive that you have more than one now? Happy New Year to you and yours and best of health and hapiness. Keep on showing us your talents. And thank you for doing so.

What are you using for the pull-down (pull-up?) seals? Audsley mentions leathers that flex with a wooden rod; but says in more recent times brass disks are used. Is what you have there air-tight? (I'm looking forward to seeing what we do for the Portatif organ!)
@nippocast
@nippocast 3 жыл бұрын
at minute 03:05 you can see the pull up mechanism, I used a disk of plywood with a felt bushing, it's not completely airtight like the leather system but it works pretty well. For the portative organs usually a simple brass rod through a hole in the wood is used. Thanks

I'm watching this again - I find your arrangement very interesting. I've never seen a diagram otherwise with the pallet box "upside down" - but I suppose there's no reason not to; it saves "vertical space", right? Now are the metal tubes below moving the air from the pallet box to the wind chest? And is *every pipe* on an offset chest connected to the main wind chest by the plastic tubing? (I'm looking at your video on voicing the pipes for the portative - it looks like, perhaps, that allows you to make them all "fit tightly" - it looks like the Venetian Flute and Principal aren't lined up note-for-note - sort of like a direct-electric chest?) It's really neat how small a space you made it all fit into. Also, would a manual roller board - (to make, say, a C side and a C# side) - take a great deal of vertical space? either above or below the keyboard - or is such a thing ever done horizontally?
@nippocast
@nippocast 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, i used this configuration to save space in height. The tubes carry the wind from the pallet box directly to the soundboards of the various registers. All the pipes are offset, I had to do this to fit 3 large-scale church registers in a 120cm wide and 220cm high box. this organ is fully mechanical, no electric winchest.

Could I ask, why cut the grooves at the lower surface of the slider board, rather than at the upper surface? And is it necessary to cut grooves at both surface of the slider? or to cut grooves above or bellow the slider.

Greetings from China! I've almost watched all of your videos and learnt a lot on the mechanism of pipe organ and certainly would like to try to built one if possible. I'd like to ask what is the diameter of the holes on the slider and the wind chest. I understand that low note pipes have larger holes while high note pipes have smaller hole for the wind to pass through, but how to calculate them? Thanks!
@nippocast
@nippocast 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Xiaohu! thanks for watching my videos. For the diameters of the holes it depends on the size of the pipes. In principle, for a small postive organ, it ranges from 16mm for the lowest note of the 8' and scaling up to 6mm for the highest note of the 2'.

4:45 Is the loss of the pressure really big with long way to the pipes? Which rubber hoses are better here, thick or thin?
@nippocast
@nippocast 4 жыл бұрын
Hi, up to 40 / 50cm the loss is negligible, it is like having a long foot of the pipes. I don't think thickness affects pressure, while internal diameter does: bigger is always better.

I'm still kind of learning about how pipe organs work, because I actually never really learned about it before. Would it be correct for me to say that the windchest essentially acts like a balloon, in that it stores air inside it like a balloon does? My current understanding is that when you press the keys, the valves on the keys open up, causing that air stored in the windchest to escape into the pipes. Air is sent to the windchest by bellows or some other means. I've been learning about how bagpipes work, and it seems to me the mechanical workings of pipe organs are actually very similar to how bagpipes work, at least when it comes to the actual air supply portion of the instrument. When playing bagpipes, air is not immediately blown into the pipes to make sound, like it would be on a saxophone or something. Rather, air is first supplied to the bag, and the air from the bag is then transferred to the pipes which make sound. So it seems to me something very similar is happening in pipe organs; the windchest is acting as the "bag" which is first blown up with air and then that air is transferred to the pipes when the keys are depressed. Would this be correct? Or am I totally wrong in my observation?
@nippocast
@nippocast 2 жыл бұрын
Not exactly, to make a correspondence with the human body, the blower is the air available, the bellows are us who inhale, the windchest are the lungs, the throat are the pallets and the vocal cords are the pipes.
@justinnaramor6050
@justinnaramor6050 2 жыл бұрын
@@nippocast That's an interesting observation, hadn't looked at it that way before! In fact I actually did some further reading specifically on windchests in pipe organs, and it seems to me they're really just a wooden box (I.E they're not actually "inflatable" in the same way as a balloon). Still though, it has to be "storing" air first; the valves on top of the chest then allow that air to escape out (because the chest has slots in it, for that very reason); this air then goes to the pipes. In the same way that you would store air from your lungs in your throat and then open your throat to let that air through your vocal cords. The air around us is where everything starts; we then use our lungs to store that air, then that air goes through our throat and vocal cords and out the mouth and so on... if that makes sense?

Hello, I would like to know what size are the channels inside the windchest? Are the channels the same? Will it be okay if I make all the channels the same size?
@nippocast
@nippocast Ай бұрын
if it is a small organ with 1 or 2 registers it is fine with all the channels the same, following the spacing of the keys. eg: a 10mm x 40mm section and 4mm separators is already sufficient (usually the distance between the keys is 14mm)
@_mayor1599
@_mayor1599 Ай бұрын
@@nippocast Yes, it will be a small organ with a scale of 4 octaves and 3 or 2 voices. I was thinking of 1.5 cm channels for the first 2 octaves and 1 cm for the other channels, but I don't know if that will be working, I want to be sure.
@nippocast
@nippocast Ай бұрын
@@_mayor1599 What matters is the section area, but I think it is more than enough for a small organ, but it depends on the size of the pipes. If you want to be sure you have to add the area of the holes at the foot of all the pipes for each channel (eg: bourdon8, octave 4 , principal2 ) and multiply the result by 2.
