That is a nice, simple design. It looks like to will work without too much trouble. A couple thoughts, if I may: A low profile scoop to help draw the water in better. When you get up to speed, you will have some air mixing in with the water. The scoop will help reduce the 'stall' effect. A 'seaweed' guard to keep the plants from getting into the jet channel. It's not a problem out in the middle of a lake, but near shore you are likely to get into it. When you were testing the engine and the drive, I heard a squeal coming from the drive. The chain looks like it might be a just a little too tight, although it's hard to tell for sure. Great project! It will be fun when you get it launched!
@ronaldhotboy9 жыл бұрын
+Mr Nutsy Thanks a lot! She did work! We topped of at about 9mph. So we just have to get a bigger engine and we will be moving. Thanks a lot for the scoop, guard, and chain ideas. The first thing I'm going to work on is the grate to protect the intake. Thank you SO much for your help and thanks for watching!
@growleym5046 жыл бұрын
Well done. A few good points raised in other comments. Your youtube peer support group is a valuable tool. I will offer this observation. The sliding engine mount eliminates the usual adjustable idler sprocket, and is very smart thinking, but it leaves the engine itself on a very shaky footing when it should be bolted solidly to the hull stringers due to vibration and torque. it will work, but it might not hold up long. If it starts to rattle itself loose, just remount the engine to a solid base and add an idler on an adjustable arm. It can be a swing arm, or an extend/retract arm, either way. Also it looks like you used a salvaged thruster. Right. No sense reinventing the wheel and it could be a complex and expensive thing to make. But it will be more efficient if the engine and transmission you are using is close in torque and RPM to the engine and transmission that originally powered it. These things tend to have a narrow performance/efficiency band, so I am led to believe. I really love what you are doing and I will be watching your followon videos.

Cool project. Just fyi. The jet pumps are set up for 5000 to 6500 rpm. You might want to change the sprockets to more of a 1 to 1 ratio if you can find a sprocket small enough to put on the shaft to match the clutch. Or move the engine forward and lower so that you can direct couple to the shaft. Maybe go with a universal joint shaft to allow the engine to direct drive the pump. Jet skis use an angled motor to line up directly with the pump shaft. Could do away with the clutch since the water acts like a fluid clutch. Another problem will be the hp. Typical ski jet pumps use at least 50hp to drive a pump like that.
@ronaldhotboy10 жыл бұрын
Thank you a bunch brother! That has been bothering me since i started this project. I never was sure if this 6.5 hp engine was going to ne enough to push her. I think what im going to do is just use this small engine to test the overall physics of the boat as a whole. After that (if everything holds up) ill upgrade to an actual pwc motor. You are extremely helful and PLEASE if you see anything else that could use improvements im always looking for a better way. Thanks a lot!
@bilderbobb10 жыл бұрын
ronaldhotboy I have raced cars of one kind or another, including go karts for 50 years. And I can tell ya, don’t under estimate what you can do with a 6.5 HP engine. For $15 you can turn that 6.5 into 10 HP. For less than a hundred you can turn into 12 HP. That last engine I built was dyno’d at 22.3 HP and turned 10K RPM, and I had around $750 in it. I also noticed you have a shoe type clutch on there. With a disk clutch, like a Bully, you can adjust the stall to hit the power band harder and faster. There is one thing to be EXTREMLY careful of tho. The stock flywheel on any of the clone engines is absolutely dangerous at RMPs higher than 6K. The magnets are glued onto the flywheel and can come off and hit the coil causing the entire side of the engine to explode. Simple solution is to put on an ARC flywheel. I am sure the jet drive will move the boat, just a matter of how fast. This has made me want to build a boat myself.......... thinking about a jet drive tunnel hull.
@ronaldhotboy10 жыл бұрын
bilderbobb I would love to get 20hp out of this little engine, but at the same time I dont want to spend $700. Thank you SO much for heads up about those magnets; i had no idea. I said the same thing about the engine and pump; I know its going to move, but the only way to realy find out how much is a true test. You really should build one brother; with all the knowledge and skills you have, it'll turn out bad ass. Thanks a lot brother!

Thank you for your reply. I went out today, and got the engine tuned, I believe pretty good. I think that old Berkeley pump is worn out, I put in tail shaft bearing, but I can see light thru the impeller and housing, and was told that's not good. Berkeley doesn't even acknowledge the pump on there web site. I was told get a "wear ring" but don't know if it has one or where to find it . The pump was made in 68'&69' for the first Seadoos & I guess a few boats. The only reason I bought the thing as a project was I had never seen a miniature Berkeley before, and thought it was cool. I'll keep you informed if you like. K.C.

Thats a clutch brother. A couple of people told me that i dont need it because the water will act as one instead. The clutch has its own sprocket (number 35 chain) and the bigger sprocket(number 35 as well) just has a bigger bore(the middle hole for the shaft) and more teeth. The clutch is typically used to prevent your engine from stalling/damaging when a load is added. Check out '1tuffdog', he knows WAY more than I do. Let me know if I can help with anything and thanks for watching brother!

You don't need the centrifugal clutch, because you can just start it in the water, but if you want to go faster your going to have to hear it up put a big gear on the engine and small on the axle for the propeller, there's alot less resistance in water verses pushing weight on land
@ronaldhotboy6 жыл бұрын

for that engine the gearing is probably ideal. If you had a larger engine you'd need to make the pump gear smaller to spin it faster. Ive owned a few jet boats and actually torque is the most important aspect but that engine is going to be too small. It takes alot of torque for the impeller to force water through the exit.. very cool though...good stuff..

I was only able to give her about 1/8 throttle before she stalled on me. I SO wish I would've seen your comment earlier. Thank you for your help brother!

Se inverter a relação, maior no motor é menor na turbina, vai aumentar o giro da turbina e aumentar o desempenho, ou só aumentar o pinhão do eixo do motor

Pretty cool, Ron! I need to find some/any of your previous videos on this boat to get caught up. Like, what is the stuff you formed the impeller chamber out of? Do you know the RPM of the prop and basically how many gallons a minute it'll pump out? (MPH?)
@ronaldhotboy8 жыл бұрын
Thanks a lot brother! I have quite a few videos showing the entire process. I didnt record the pump intake process because I thought that no one would want to see it. I used fiberglass and resin for the pump intake housing. I used clothe hangers to capture the curve. I have no idea about the the RPM nor the GPM. My first test we maxed out about 9MPH with a 6.5hp engine that was geared wrong (3:1) Thanks for watching brother!

hi ronald, air cooled honda clone gokart engine users remove the governor system, what do you think about it? and do you have any idea about gasoline fume explode risk, you know gasoline fume is heavier than air.
@ronaldhotboy10 жыл бұрын
I personally never removed one myself. The only mod I do to these engines is adding an electric start system. I never thought about it exploding; hopefully it doesn't. Thanks for the advice!

swop the two sprockets around so there is more rpm on the output shaft, think the motor has enough tourge to do that

Thanks a lot Wean! When I install the new engine I will keep that in mind. Thanks for the help!

Nice chain tightener ,simple and effective solution . How do you plan to keep the water out ?
@ronaldhotboy9 жыл бұрын
+Frank Newcomb Thanks a lot brother! Im not sure if you seen the float test, but here is how I water-tightened everything. Let me know if I answered your question. Thanks for watching!

Awesome work man! But that clutch is going to self-destruct when you load it with water.
@ronaldhotboy6 жыл бұрын
Jim P. It held up pretty good during the first initial test although it was only under water load for about 20 minutes LOL

cant wait to see it on the water . I have a few ideas that jet drive you have is good . what about 2 jet drives that run off of one motor. I have a remote control boat im building like that one engine 2 props .

Delrico Eppes Thanks brother i cant wait neither. DAMN MAN, that would be bad ass! (Doing the evil scientist fingers lol)

you might scavenge the driveline from one of those cheap scooters that's been laid down too many times for a good price. I've not put much thought behind this idea, so it's up to you to research final drive/ variable ratios that would offer vs the torque numbers you wish to apply. hopefully that gives you some healthy food for thought, rather than a pipe-dream. By the way, that build looks solid and clean! Props to ya, friend!

I love it. You are learning as you go. Everything you build from scratch has lots of redoes. However at the end you have something to be proud of. I have a 96 evo harley motor I want to use in my build. I am from Louisiana and built my first boat in high school. 12 ft pirogue. I am not sure whether to use a prop. Or jet drive? Thanks for sharing.
@ronaldhotboy6 жыл бұрын
You are so right about that brother; most of what we do is trial and error. I just love testing new theories. With that Harley you should have plenty of torque to push through. WHAT! I'm here in baton rouge! You might be God sent because I was looking to purchase some aluminum for my next boat within a couple of months. I started my build with a prop and rudder in mind but then after talking to a few people I changed the design mid build to jet drive. They both have their draw backs but id rather not have to put up with my prop hitting debris in the water. Thanks for watching brother!

Wood work, motor mounts, fiberglass work, metal work...you hit all of those nice areas of knowledge with this one. I'd love to make something like this. It has an interesting to make. Where did you source the jet boat parts from?

Thank you so much my brother! Its just so soothing to work with different materials. I ordered all of my parts from ebay (95 wetjet duo)

Thanks a lot Aaron! That is exactly what we plan on doing brother (going 1:1) I'm glad you like it bro; thanks for watching!

You could just directly connect it without those gears, it make propeler turn slower
