Nathan Seidle’s wife gave him this already locked safe as a gift with no combination. Weird present, but he loves a good challenge. So he built a safecracking robot.

It's not supposed to be. It is fire resistant, but the shell is susceptible to cracking with a sledge hammer. I guess they only bothered with the lock because it looks cool. Unfortunately the previous owner forgot the combination. Fortunately, he didn't leave anything in it when he sold it.

its a fire resistant safe, not fireproof, so really its a time delay to save your belongings from or to keep them out of direct reach (ie: kids), not actually meant as a theft safe/vault. thats why the cams are so loose and that 28-29-30-31-32 all work in either position. sloppy like a Dudley Locker padlock. ( 0-59 on the dial, but really only 45 actual combinations. ) cheap construction/parts/machining for a low end market product or storage grade product. Id REALLY like to see his device try to crack a S&G ( sargent and greenleaf 67XX series ) you over shoot a single digit by half a mark on the dial and you need to restart. source: I am an ex specialized locksmith.

The technique of using a combination range, as a hit for one number, for reducing the number of possible combinations was made famous by Feynman in the book "Surely You're Joking Mr. Feynman". Cool robot.

Guys I have an idea to invent a robot to do this too. All I gotta do is put the safe on the safe cracking platform, and turn on the robot to execute its command. This in turn will lower a hydraulic press precisely on the door of the safe, just as the robot intended. It seems flawless, I know, any suggestions for improvements are welcome, like a robot that turns on the press would be great and all, but maybe one that turns it off?

Safe Dailers have been around for a long time .. This is in no way new tech.. His robot would not work on a Sergant and Greenleaf Dial, at least not without some code changes.. The Notched Disk is only in the Sentry safe .. and most of them you don't need the trouble of building a robot to open it.. As a matter of fact it is pretty much a far stretch of the word to call any Sentry product a "safe"

3:35 the issue is, it's a product you buy. It's not software. It doesn't get periodic updates you can just download. Flaws found out are flaws that every current owner of the product has to actively be worried about. They can't just update their safe. They would need to buy another safe hoping the new one doesn't have the same flaws. And if their current safe has not stopped functioning, they wouldn't buy the new one.

"I want to point out this issue. So you can make this more secure." Richard Feynman tried doing that when he was working with the US government build the first nuclear bomb as he found that he was able to open several of the safes on the facility. The response was "Do not let Dr. Feynman near any locked safes. If he does come near them, change the combination immediately." Incidentally the Colonel who wrote this memo had his safe opened because he never change the combination from the default one.

That exploit, along with the 'dropping it' and 'smacking it' attacks are for the lousy quality electronic safe locks that use a switched solenoid to move an obstruction out of the way, allowing the safe to be opened. Neither of these methods will accomplish anything useful on even a low quality mechanical dial lock.
