Wow, you just stirred up a long lost memory of my youth! I vaguely recall someone in my Mom's family making this for Family Christmas parties. I'm going back close to 60 years ago so ... I think my Mom didn't let me or my siblings have any if this because it had whiskey (likely Irish Whiskey since Mom's family was Irish) in it! Anyways, I thought it was gross because it actually had meat in it too. I couldn't wrap my head around eating meat mixed with fruit in a pie crust, LOL! But you're right, I think I only saw this around the Holidays. I'm sure they didn't make this in a smoker though. Interesting dish! Might have to wait until things warm up, up north here. I tried to smoke a salmon fillet earlier this week. The outdoor temperature was in the teens with windchills in single digits. The PitBoss really struggled, barely holding a temperature of 180°F while it was set at 275°, so I had to abort. I ordered an insulated blanket for it though (no, I'm not kidding!) and Amazon delivered it yesterday. Its made to fit this model too. Hopefully I'll be able to use it again soon. Hey, great video, and thanks for jogging my head down memory lane, LOL! Be safe and be well!

Wow. I had no idea they struggled in very cold weather. I am at the airport flying back home this morning and we got a little snow up in NJ this week too. I shoveled snow for the first time in about 40 years. :). I don’t remember having minced meat as a kid but when I got married my mother in law made it a few times a year and me and my father in law enjoyed it for sure. I think by that time 1990 or so, meat was no longer part of it but the name never changed. I have the other half of what I made, maybe I will smoke a pie using that filling this weekend. After 2 weeks in the fridge, the flavors have likely all merged together well. Yummy.

Yes, when it gets this cold, they even struggle to light. Its on my backyard patio and I suppose I could help my cause by wheeling it around the side of the house to the garage on the front but it doesn't wheel easily, pretty heavy, on uneven terrain with snow on it. If you get outta practice shoveling snow, stop by over here! I'll even let you use the snowblower! Safe travels!
