I've been making strawberry preserves for almost 50 years now, with the same recipe that my mother and my grandmother used. Equal parts of strawberries and sugar, period. no Sure Jell, no water, nothing else added. Water bath to preserve. Comes out perfect every time.

Hi Suzie! Thank you so much for the video and instructions. I've never canned anything before, but I've always wanted to. Your video helped me a lot. I did research on the process and decided to go with a water bath so as not to buy special equipment yet. The jam is processing this very moment lol. I appreciate the tips and expect it to turn out well! 😊

I use a metal straw to "pit" the strawberries. Works great!

I think metal tubes are easier but they waste more of the strawberry

I use a plastic straw to "pit" the strawberries. Works good! I also add 1/4 tsp. of butter/margarine to the strawberries and had no "foam."
@olliepoo2 жыл бұрын
The foam you removed, my grandmother would remove that and let it cool then put it on vanilla ice cream. We are talking probably 50 years ago and maybe she didn’t consider them impurities but I ate quite a number ice cream and foam bowls.

Aunt Susie, why did you add baking soda to the strawberries when you washed them?

I use a big stock pot as long as you have a lid I think it would be ok! Also I have heard to not stack the jars in the canner and make sure you have a rack for them to sit on. You don’t want the jars to touch each other or the bottom of the pan (which is touching the burner.) just my opinion, I’m not a pro but hope this helps! ☺️
@judypierce70282 жыл бұрын
@@auntlindafl5010 Yes, you can use a stock (soup) pot for a hot water bath. Place a rack on the bottom of the pot so the jars will not burn. If you have no rack, place a washcloth in the bottom of the pot. Cover the filled jars with at least 2 inches of water to allow air pressure to escape. When the water comes to a rolling boil, cook 10 minutes. Turn off the heat and remove lid. Let the jars sit for 10 minutes to rest before removing them. Place the jars on a dishtowel so that there will not be any shock between a hot jar and a cold counter.

@@thepinegardener7207 No, you are right. I did not mention that in my reply. The jars should not be stacked nor touch each other.

I use the butter, real butter and it does nothing more than cad a sheen to the top after the pectin sets. Doesn't have an affect on the flavor of the Preserves.

So far this has been the worst teaching video I’ve seen. What kind of lids are those, never seen them before. Do we have to use lids like that to can the strawberries? Do we have to pressure can them or can they be water bathed?

I bet you do not get many people on your web site, the reason is why don't you try to listen to your video from someone else house, Imagine all your work and you cannot hear a word as my Volume is on the highest level it can go and you cannot hear anything important your trying to say and teach others that cannot do this, Poor You for having people help you who do not know what they are doing!
